INTRODUCTION
This year, the BIFA Freight Service Awards celebrate their 20th anniversary. The
well-established competition has always been sponsored by some eminent companies,
and is recognised as one of the most prestigious in the industry, with the awards
themselves becoming increasingly more coveted every year.
The competition encourages and rewards high standards and professionalism, representing
the ultimate recognition of special achievements in different sectors of the industry. Past
finalists and winners have been able to feel very proud of their certificates and trophies,
as well as benefiting from enhanced company profiles through substantial media coverage
in the trade press, and high visibility at the awards ceremony itself.
The ceremony luncheon is an annual event on the industry calendar. This year’s special
20th anniversary function will take place on Thursday 22 January 2009 at its traditional venue,
The Brewery, in the City of London, and will be hosted by the Rt. Hon. Michael Portillo. This
gathering of some 450 BIFA members and their guests provides a very valuable opportunity
to praise the well-deserving winners, as well as networking with colleagues, customers and
other industry representatives.
BIFA looks forward to yet another successful competition with a large number of entrants.

A customer loyalty programme, LIFT, introduced in October 2007, has taken off in the UK marketplace. The pioneering

served to six, and the total flights to India to 48 each week. This new route will increase cargo capacity to and from
the region by 2,500 tonnes per annum.

The Environment category is open to companies wishing to present a specific ‘green’
initiative or case study which shows consideration for the environment, or demonstrates

OCEAN FREIGHT AWARD

The Ocean Freight category (previously named ‘Deep Sea’) is open to companies, including
NVOCs, providing ocean freight services and multi-modal transport operations.

Southampton Container Terminals (SCT) is the UK’s second largest container terminal, handling some 45% of the
UK’s entire sea-borne trade with the Far East and an annual throughput exceeding 1.9 million TEU. The terminal
handles 14 deep-sea vessels each week linking Southampton with the Middle East, India, Far East, China, Canada,
USA East and West Coast and the Caribbean. Up to a further four weekly feeder services call at the terminal.
In recent years SCT has embarked on a number of projects designed to improve the efficiency and capacity of
the container terminal. During 2007, SCT expanded the terminal footprint by 23.5 additional acres, purchased 15
new straddle carriers and recruited and trained over 100 operational staff. 2008 will see the terminal’s two new super
post-panamax gantry cranes with an outreach of 22 containers wide commissioned into operation with a further
two super post-panamax gantry cranes of the same specification being delivered into operation in August 2009.
With an increase in feeder services from the terminal, the prospect of increased rail services, the rail gauge
enhancement project enabling 9’ 6” containers to be carried on standard wagons adding to the highly acclaimed
Vehicle Booking System (VBS) for road haulage, SCT and the Port of Southampton present a highly attractive service
offering for importers and exporters.

minimum of two years’ employment in the freight industry. Entrants must describe their career
achievements to date and show a commitment to the industry by demonstrating their goals and ambitions.

Forwarder, whilst giving their employer the benefits of greater publicity and visibility.

HOW TO ENTER
Entry Fee £75.00 per category
Please complete the appropriate entry form included at the back of this brochure
for the award categories you wish to apply for. On receipt of your entry form, you
will be sent a Submission Pack. The sooner you submit your entry form, the more
time you will have to complete your submission.
You will be required to put forward a detailed 2,000 word submission, in a standard
format set by BIFA, for each of the categories entered. The submission should
consist of a detailed description of a relevant service/project for each category,
such as a specific project or case study, the development of a new service for a
particular customer, or a more generic example of good practice.
Your submission will need to demonstrate excellence through improved customer
service levels which have been achieved by means of trade facilitation, value-added
services and cost-saving initiatives. A limited amount of supporting documentation
can be included. A preliminary judges’ meeting will take place to select four
finalists in each category.
One winner in each category will be announced at the Awards Ceremony on
Thursday 22 January 2009.
THE JUDGING PANEL
The Main Awards Judging Panel will comprise members of the BIFA Secretariat,
independent industry experts, and representatives from sponsor companies.

HOW TO ENTER THE YOUNG FREIGHT FORWARDER AWARD
No entry fee applicable
Young Freight Forwarder Award entrants are required to complete the appropriate
entry form included at the back of this brochure, and send this in together with
their submission consisting of:
•a CV;
• a career statement detailing any special achievements and objectives for
the future;
• a training and development record; and
• an article of up to 700 words on ‘What will be the impact of the Authorised
Economic Operator (AEO) on freight forwarders and the supply chain’ to be
evaluated by the Young Freight Forwarder Award Judging Panel.
Four finalists will be chosen by the Young Freight Forwarder Award Judging Panel.
Finalists will be invited to a face-to-face interview, to discuss the finalist’s career in
the past, present and future. One winner, out of four finalists’, will be chosen and
announced at the BIFA Awards Ceremony on Thursday 22 January 2009.

THE CEREMONY
THURSDAY 22 JANUARY 2009
The BIFA Freight Service Awards is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2008.
The competition will culminate in an industry gathering at the BIFA Annual
Lunch and Awards Ceremony, which will take place on Thursday 22 January
2009 at The Brewery in Chiswell Street, London EC1. This event is attended
by some 450 people including BIFA members, their customers, industry
figures and representatives from the trade press.
Following a Drinks Reception, the event host presents all category finalists
with a framed certificate on the main stage of the impressive vaulted Porter
Tun Room, after which guests can enjoy their three course seated luncheon.
An overview of all the finalists’ submissions is given in a dynamic audiovisual
presentation, prior to the category sponsor announcing the winner.
A representative from each award-winning company will be honoured with
the Winner’s Trophy – a symbol of achieving industry excellence.
