Message from the President 

Sr. Patricia Wolf, RSM ‘62 

This letter begins with two pieces of good 

news, the first being to recognize the achievements 

of the Class of 2009. All 160 seniors 

graduated; 96 percent have gone on to two or 

four year colleges and earned more than $2.3 

million in academic scholarships and grants. 

I also recognize the successful completion of 

SCA’s third year review by the Middle States Association 

for Colleges and Secondary Schools. 

This Middle States accreditation reflects our 

high standard of academic excellence. 

In a year marked by some harsh economic 

realities, this Annual Report reflects many 

positive areas of activity. 

Finances and Alumnae Support 

Despite the somber economic reality, support 

by alumnae and friends continued to grow. I 

acknowledge in a special way the providence 

of the RTS Family Foundation for providing 

a grant for tuition assistance. I also acknowledge 

our success in meeting the terms of the 

challenge grant of $30,000 which matched 

each new dollar raised in the Annual Fund. I 

am grateful beyond words for your generosity 

which helped us meet this milestone. 

2013. A basic expectation requires classrooms 

be equipped with Smart Boards or projector 

capability. At SCA, 85 percent of our classrooms 

are fully equipped with Smart Boards, 

all classrooms have internet access, and each 

room has at least one instructional computer. 

We are continually working to have every 

classroom equipped as an optimum learning 

environment for faculty and student use. 

However, because the pace of change in 

technology is relentless and the cost to keep 

abreast very significant, we established a 

Technology Advisory Committee. I am 

delighted to announce that Joanne Scarcella 

Clemente, PhD ‘63, Director of Online Instruction 

at Dominican College, Orangeburg, 

New York, will provide the visionary leadership 

for this endeavor. 

Professional Development and 

Learning Teams 

Critical to keeping pace with technology and 

student learning styles is the professional 

development of faculty and administration. 

To this end, professional learning teams have 

been established under the leadership of our 

Principal, Sr. Ann M. Welch, RSM. 

disciplines, as well as teams utilizing a crossdisciplinary 

approach. 

The process involves a review of the curriculum, 

coupled with analysis of student 

progress. Where student weaknesses are 

identified, strategies are developed that are 

student-focused and results oriented. 

Governance 

Our Board of Trustees is comprised of sixteen 

persons, including Sisters of Mercy, men and 

women, and other religious colleagues. 

Trustees generally serve two three-year terms. 

I am immensely grateful to trustees, Karen 

Adragna D’Aleo ‘71, Chair, and JoMarie 

DiGirolomo Pica, who completed their terms 

this year. I am delighted to welcome Kathleen 

McCarrick Weiden, PhD ‘75, Director of 

Tax, the LeFrak Organization and John May, 

attorney. Carolyn Tragni, Executive Dean, 

Mercy College, Dobbs Ferry, was appointed 

to a second term. 

As I look back on the year, the challenges 

have been great, but so have the opportunities.

Technology and Classroom 2013 

Because technology is so pervasive to the learning 

environment, our Strategic Plan calls for 

us to develop our vision for the Classroom of 

The purpose of the teams is to provide a 

systematic process for analyzing the impact 

of professional practices on student learning. 

This is done in teams representing the same 

partnering with our sponsors and committed 

Board of Trustees, Sr. Ann M. Welch, RSM, 

Principal, and the SCA faculty and staff.

Sr. Ann M. Welch, RSM 

A unique privilege of the Principal is to shed 

light on the day to day activities of the school 

and the successes of our students. Daily, 720 

students enter the doors of St. Catharine 

Academy, and proceed to go to class, participate 

in co-curricular activities, make new 

friends, and slowly but surely, change from 

girls into young women. 

So much happens in one day that it is easy to 

miss the moments of triumph, big and small. 

Writing my letter for this Annual Report 

helps me to recall these special moments. It is 

with pride that I share them with you. 

Academics 

 

• 100 percent of our students passed the 

English Regents and Modern Language 

Regents in Spanish and Italian. 

• 96 percent of the Class of 2009 will attend 

college. 

• All classrooms have internet access and 

85% of all classrooms are equipped with 

Smart Boards. 

• Student attendance rate is a very strong 98 

percent. 

Awards 

• St. Catharine Academy was recognized by 

the United States Congress for its efforts to 

alleviate suffering in the Congo. 

• Ariel Tomlinson ‘11 and Krystin Hernandez 

‘10 placed first in Eddy Award competition 

for Interview and Photo Essay. 

• Essay winner Samantha Medina ‘10 was 

named 2009 Police Commissioner for a 

Day. 

Athletics 

• Varsity Volleyball Team won first place in 

the Division A of the Archdiocese of New 

York Catholic High School Athletic Association, 

and moved on to Semi-Finals in 

the New York State Championship games. 

• JV Cheerleaders ranked 14th in national 

competition. 

• Varsity Soccer Team won first place in 

Division B of the Archdiocese of New York 

Catholic High School Athletic Association. 

Service 

• SCA students raised $2,000 for the 

Mukuru School in Kenya and $5,615 for 

the Panzi Hospital in the Congo. 

• SCA Blood Drive collected 75 pints of 

blood. 

• Grades 9 and 10 provided Christmas gifts 

to Mercy Center, Bronx, for 14 families. 

• Grades 11 and 12 provided food for 

Mercy Center, Bronx, Thanksgiving food 

drive. 

In a year with more than enough challenges, 

there were also these many moments of pride 

in the accomplishments of all involved in the 

mission of St. Catharine Academy. We are 

grateful, indeed.

There is something about the crisp air of 

October that stirs the heart of an educator. 

It speaks of new beginnings filled with the 

promise of fresh ideas and swirling challenges. 

The indoor activity at St. Catharine Academy 

mirrors that of the fall season. Once again, this 

school is poised to deliver to its students the 

knowledge that will eventually lead to wisdom 

and ultimately to the Source of all Wisdom. 

Through many seasons and challenges, that 

promise has been kept by the founding Sisters 

of Mercy and their educational colleagues. It is 

a promise that continues today as we enthusiastically 

embrace Catherine McAuley’s vision 

of empowering young women through service 

and quality education, both essential elements 

of education “in the Mercy tradition”. 

For many years I have served on the board 

of St. Catharine Academy. There, I have 

witnessed the incredible contributions made 

 

by this cohesive group of dedicated, skilled 

professionals. Keeping faithful to both vision 

and promise, their sole desire is to work with 

school leadership to advance the educational 

mission of SCA. 

As we enter another academic year, our history 

reminds us that the same winds that bring the 

swirling challenges also carry the freshness of 

creative ideas to meet them. With joyful enthusiasm 

then, we open our doors and let fall in!

Why Women Give 

An SCA Perspective 

As a group, women are having a growing impact on fundraising efforts in the U.S. A recent book by Sondra Shaw-Hardy and Martha A. Taylor takes a 

serious look at this, and examines the influences on women’s charitable giving. The authors found many women are motivated to give when they experience a 

personal connection with the organization, are passionate about its purpose, and see their involvement as an opportunity to make a positive change. 

Intrigued by the findings of the authors, we invited two SCA alumnae to share their perspectives on this subject. Both agreed to do so, although one wished to 

be anonymous, and that has been honored. 

Jennifer Torchetti ‘00 Gratitude and Connection 

Jennifer Torchetti is part of the younger generation of alumnae whose support of SCA is tangible and consistent. She believes that 

her peers, most of whom were members of the honors’ classes, also have maintained a strong sense of connection and support for 

SCA. Speaking of the positive influence of the school in her life, Jennifer says, “It’s where I began to focus my goals and it played a 

major part in my becoming an adult.” Now, within reach of achieving her high school goal of acquiring her Ph.D by the time she 

is thirty, Jennifer believes that her education in private schools has been one of the most influential factors in her life. “You talk to 

other people and you realize how incredibly privileged you were to have a private education, rooted in faith and social justice.” She 

is earnest about ensuring that the support she experienced at SCA be there for other girls. 

Jennifer maintains strong connections with St. Catharine’s, through friends, faculty and Pathways – and she believes this is a factor 

in her motivation to support the mission. “I still feel like I’m involved in what they are doing.” 

Anonymous Alumna 

Several circumstances converged that caused our “anonymous alum” to remember her time at SCA: Her own daughters were completing their 

education; she was growing in her awareness of the vigorous fund-raising campaigns being undertaken by the men’s schools; and, she was 

moving to the realization that there was a great need to help others. “St. Catharine’s was a wonderful school to help us think beyond 

ourselves, and that stayed with me”, she says. 

Believing that the school had started her off on the right foot, she says, “I wanted to help girls of any faith have the education and 

opportunity I had”. She is passionately committed to education in many forms, and sees better education as a means of empowerment, 

leading to a better job. But her support for SCA is based on more than that: “It was such a wonderful environment. That’s why 

I give to St. Catharine’s. It was a proud moment in my life, and I would like that experience to be there for other young ladies!”

Gifts that provide scholarships and student tuition assistance are 

among the most important contributions that an alumna or friend can 

make to St. Catharine Academy. These gifts:
