THERE WAS NO “flash
of light” or “clap
of thunder”, just
a quiet recognition of
God’s love for me, and an
increasing awareness of a
need within me to make
a commitment to God’s
love in the world, through
Jesus his Son.
Growing up in a
congregational church
manse, my earliest
memories are of my
parents working within
the church, and our
lives revolving around
church life. I became a
church member of the
United Reformed Church
in 1981 and my sense of
commitment and service
deepened when I became
an elder.
by our church was
fantastic. For me, being a
Christian is about sharing
the love of God to people
around you. Sometimes
that is very difficult to do
but it’s worth it!
I am lucky that I have a
job which enables me to
do this on a daily basis.
I have been privileged
to be alongside people
in their times of sorrow
and joy. My family and
I have attended family
services at St John in the
Wilderness since April
Watching the baptism of
my then new husband
Tim was an exciting time
for me, and it deepened
our shared life together.
Seeing our baby son
Ralph, now aged 8,
QUIET
News
2012. We did not attend
church, after moving
to Exmouth, for about
ten months, as we felt
we needed a break for
reflection but I missed the
rhythm of church life and I
lost my way.
Our church is different
to the one I grew up in
but I have felt cared for
again. My excitement for
church and God’s love has
returned and that’s what
I want for Ralph, Tim and
me as we face the future
together.
Lent
I’M ALWAYS vaguely
amused that Mothering
Sunday falls in the
middle of Lent. It’s like
taking a pilgrimage
journey through deserted
places where our
discipline and stamina
are tested, and where we
concentrate hard on our
spiritual and devotional
exercises, and then
decide to spend a day in
Disneyland just to give
ourselves a little break. It
feels incongruous.
Mind you, Lent always
feels a little incongruous
when it follows too
closely on the heels of
Christmas; no sooner have
we celebrated the birth of
Jesus than we’re preparing
for his death. Sometimes
I think we ought to have
more time simply to enjoy
Melanesian
Mission
THE BROTHERS and Sisters will be
commissioned at a special service
at Exeter Cathedral on Sunday 7th
April at 2pm, followed by a reception in
the Chapter House. The Mission group
will also be involved with Holy Ground
at Exeter Cathedral on Sunday 14th April
at 7pm. Everyone is welcome to attend
both services.
that birth before we have
to face the hard reality of
that death.
The journey from
Christmas to cross is
one in which we watch
and learn as we follow
Jesus through the events
of his ministry. We see
his compassion for
those in need, and his
determination to follow
God’s call and will; we
see his impatience with
hypocrisy and doublestandards;
we see how
he recognises the faith of
others even when they
are outside the household
of faith; we see him and
his ministry grow and
develop. Above all we
see the true strength and
depth and meaning of
love. All of that should
mark our discipleship too.
But the journey with
Jesus from crib to cross
has its highs and lows, so
perhaps it’s OK to enjoy
Mothering Sunday en
route. But we need to
remember that it’s not
just a journey to the cross.
Ours is a resurrection faith
and we are a resurrection
people, filled with the
boundless possibilities
of God. Let that mark our
Lenten journey too.
Prayer
MANY PEOPLE struggle with
prayer but it forms the centre
of our relationship with God.
As Henri Nouwen, the Dutch-born
Catholic priest and writer, said: “Prayer
is a way of life which allows you to find
stillness in the midst of the world.”
The Exploring Prayer team consists of lay
and ordained people who want to share
their experiences of prayer with others.
AFTER 10 YEARS as associate priest in Dawlish and a
career in nursing and health visiting, Helen Bays is the
new Diocesan Spirituality Advisor (coordinator of the
Spiritual Direction Network).
In her new role, Helen is keen to promote spiritual
direction as an opportunity for anyone to explore their
spirituality in greater depth. “Spiritual direction has
been a practice in the Church since early times,
but is often assumed to be the prerogative of
clergy or those in religious life,” she said. “In fact
it can be for every Christian or indeed for anyone
wanting to explore the spiritual aspects of life. It is
a relationship in which anything may be said but
nothing must be said.
“It may be helpful during a particular period of searching
or become a permanent part of Christian discipleship.”
To explore this further, contact Helen on
07722 106632 or s.d.r.s@hotmail.co.uk
We have previously run days of prayer
throughout the Diocese and many
people have found these days very
helpful.
They offer a safe place to share our
own experiences of prayer, where
confidentiality is respected and different
types of prayer are explored.
We offer churches and groups interested
in prayer, days, half days, quiet days and
courses on prayer.
RECENTLY I met Joe Osman, the
man who helped invent Fairtrade
chocolate. Back in the early 1980s
he was part of a movement which
worked with sugar and cocoa growers
helping them to develop their farms
and offering them a fair price for their
produce. They named the idea ‘fair
trade’ and they changed the world.
The Real Easter Egg is the
UK’s first and only Fairtrade
egg to explain the meaning
of Easter; David Marshall,
creator of the Real Easter Egg,
tells its story…
Talking of names, did you know that
the Latin name for the fruit from which
chocolate comes is Theobroma Cacao,
which translates as Bitter fruit of God
Bitter because Cacao (pronounced
ca-cow) is ten times more bitter than
lemons. But the bitterness of chocolate
lies far deeper than its taste and it is a
shocking story.
More valuable than gold: When
Columbus encountered South America
in 1502 the welcoming natives brought
him Cacao beans. To them the beans
were a highly prized super fruit - full
of fat, containing 4,000 times more
antioxidants than blueberries and,
when turned into a sugared chocolate
drink, gave those drinking it a serious
choccy high.
The bitter truth
about Easter Eggs
Workers drying and mixing
cocoa beans before processing
©Traidcraft
It was so addictive that the Catholic
church ruled that chocolate could be
drunk on fasting Fridays but should be
given up for Lent.
Slavery and chocolate: As demand
for the chocolate drink grew, in 17th
century Europe, the Church helped the
Cacao growers organise their farms
into plantations. The Cacao tree was
exported to Africa and plantations
developed on the Ivory Coast. The
plantations quickly became forced
labour slave plantations providing the
economic template for what was would
eventually become the Transatlantic
slave trade leading to the development
of some of the unjust economic
structures operating in the world
today.
The Fairtrade system works by cutting
through the legacy of slavery. It
guarantees growers a minimum price
for their goods. Growers also receive
a cash premium to invest in their
community. This means they get about
$65 per tonne extra for their cocoa
beans to spend on anything from
building schools to providing fresh
water supplies.
It is a difficult battle, though. Less than
1% of chocolate sales are Fairtrade,
which is very poor. It should come as
Fairtrade Feature
no surprise that slavery was discovered
to be operating in chocolate farms
as recently as last year. It is also still
acceptable for manufacturers to offer
only a small percentage of chocolate
goods that are labelled Fairtrade. And
brands such as Rain Forest Alliance,
which offers no cash premium and less
economic benefit, are now competing
with Fairtrade leading to a risk of
consumer confusion.
Meaningful Chocolate: We make
the Real Easter Egg from Fairtrade
chocolate; we have also donated more
than £40,000 from sales to the charity
Traidcraft Exchange which helps some
of the poorest farmers in the world.
When shopping, remember the bitter
legacy of chocolate and buy Fairtrade.
Remember also Joe Osman and the
early pioneers of Fairtrade chocolate
who proved that the way we shop can
change the world.
The Real Easter Egg is available from the
Cathedral gift shop, Traidcraft, Church shops,
independent shops and supermarkets.
Karen Brookes-Ferrari visits one of the longest running Messy Churches in Devon which has
expanded into a new Messy Mums group…
Feature
STARCROSS’S MESSY CHURCH was
established almost four years ago
and is a lively congregation open to
parents, grandparents, child minders and
their children.
Run by church warden Claire Johns,
Starcross Messy Church attracts over 50
people once a month in St Paul’s Church,
to “chill out, create, celebrate and chew”
together.
“It is not a club for children but a
congregation of different ages,” explains
Claire. “This is church, just not as we
know it, and it is messy not just because
of the mess we make but because it is
more fluid and fuzzy around the edges!”
This view is echoed by Rev Nick Hawkins
who is new to both Messy Church and
the area, having moved from the Church
of Wales. “It is wonderfully chaotic but
really worthwhile – a parallel and lively
congregation,” he said. “We recently had
a double baptism as a direct result of our
Messy Church so families are learning
about the faith.”
And the families really enjoy chatting
with a drink and biscuit, getting stuck
into craft, worshipping and sharing food
together. Mother of two Kirsten said
she loved Messy Church. “It is part of
TABLE TALK is an interactive game of questions and
discussion funded by Million for Mission. It creates space
for people to discuss and share ideas on life issues and
spirituality as a first step towards engaging with faith issues.
One pack is provided for each deanery and training was carried
out in each Archdeaconry during January. Four further training
opportunities are scheduled in September 2013:
our monthly routine and it is lovely to
be fed once a month – it really takes the
pressure off.”
Sarah, mum of five children aged 3-15,
said the group fostered community
spirit. “My oldest child is learning to take
part rather than sit on her own in her
bedroom and everyone pitches in to help
each other with the children.”
The mums have enjoyed getting to know
each so much that mother of two, Sally,
set up Messy Mums, an evening
session without the children. “Messy
Mums sprang from the desire to
get to know other Mums better,
form stronger relationships and
encourage one another,” explained
Sally. “We prepare proper
coffee, serve nice chocolate
biscuits and each session
we discuss a different theme
using a game called Table Talk.
“Our aim is for the mums to feel
uplifted and supported and show
that church can be fun,” she added.
And Messy Mums has proved very
popular. “There have been tears and
laughter,” said Kirsten. “It was wonderful
to chat without the children and get to
know each other better.”
Sisters Alison and Claire said it was great
to meet people they already know and
share their problems. “You get get to talk
to people who aren’t family and get an
outside opinion on issues,” said Alison.
Canon Anna Norman-Walker, Diocesan
missioner, said: “Initiatives like ‘Messy
Mums’ are a vital way to help people, who
have come into the life of the Church
through Messy Church, begin to find
deeper pathways into the Christian faith.”
Good Friday Dartmoor Walk
CHURCHES in the villages of West
Dartmoor will be taking to the moor
on foot this Easter as part of their
Good Friday services. All are welcome to walk
from from one church to the next on Friday
29th March or simply to enjoy a service
especially for children at Sampford Spiney.
All the churches will be linked by a series of
short reflections and prayers based upon
the “Stations of the Cross”, a story in 12 parts
which shares the journey taken by Jesus from
his sentencing, to death on the cross.
Revd Preb Nick Shutt of West Dartmoor
Mission Community said: “Life is a journey
full of highs and lows. Many people find that
getting out for a walk on the moor helps
them gain perspective.
Process to appoint a
new diocesan bishop
AS ANNOUNCED in January, Bishop Michael
will retire this summer and a process for
appointing a new Diocesan bishop is
already underway. The Vacancy in See Committee
is preparing a description of the Diocese and a
desired profile of the new Bishop, and arranging
the election of six representatives (including at least
three lay members) from the Committee to the
Crown Nominations Commission (CNC).
A public meeting will be held in early Summer,
for people to feed in their views about the sort of
bishop Devon needs. The CNC will also consult
with other interest groups, including public bodies
like councils. If you would like to have your say on
what this Diocese needs, please email newbishop@
exeter.anglican.org. Emails can’t be answered
individually, but all will be passed on to committee
members. The CNC aim to approve a candidate
in the autumn – their preferred choice must then
be approved by Downing Street and the Queen, a
process that can take many weeks.
Please hold all those involved in selecting our new
Bishop in your prayers, and pray for Bishop Michael
and Esther as they look ahead to their retirement.
RESPITE CARE
Would you like a break
WE COSSET individuals so they can have
a break, enjoying the very best care.
It means that caregivers can have a respite, too.
We also offer residential and dementia care.
We have been caring for older Christians for over 200 years.
The home is half a mile from the seafront and has good sea
views from some aspects.
Residents particularly enjoy the sheltered garden which
catches the sunshine, and also has a ‘sensory’ feature.
