Detailed Description of <strong>Thar</strong> Area<br />

<strong>Thar</strong> Coal fields are located in <strong>Thar</strong> Desert area occupying East and Southeastern portion of<br />

<strong>Sindh</strong> Province of Pakistan. Being a desert, the area is extremely dry arid region with very low<br />

rainfall and limited water resources. The supply of water <strong>for</strong> the development of mine, power<br />

plant and related domestic complex is vital <strong>for</strong> successful future operation of facilities. The<br />

estimated coal reserves of the <strong>Sindh</strong> Province is nearly 185 billion tones in mine fields like <strong>Thar</strong>,<br />

Badin, and Thatta-Sonda-Jherrack of which <strong>Thar</strong> mines possesses one of the biggest Lignite<br />

deposits spread over 9100 sq. km in the <strong>Thar</strong>parkar district.<br />

The investigation drilling in the past revealed that the coal is in-seams with extractable thickness<br />

of 22 m at a depth of 110 m up to 200 m. The upper seam layer of coal reserve reportedly<br />

contains in-situ water.<br />
