Saint-Lary
A trip to Georgia
I’d like to tell you about my marvellous trip to Georgia last
September. It was so exciting. My husband had a lecture
in a symposium about Georgian vocal polyphonies and I
could go with him (my mother looked after my children).
He went there some days before me and I got back
earlier than him. I was working as it was the beginning
of the new course. I had listened to a Georgian choir in
Madrid three or four months before, it was a wonderful
experience, so I thought that it would be very
interesting to listen to them in their own context.
In August, when the Russians fought the Georgian and
attacked Osetia´s frontier, we were afraid we couldn’t
go, but after a few weeks and after speaking with them,
we decided to go.
Well, the first impression was a mixture between any
European country with my own country when I was child,
and perhaps some places in East Berlin. The buildings are
absolutely ruined and a lot of streets too. Only the main
streets are restored and of course the churches, theatres
and the great Conservatorium. This is a big and simple
building, without ornaments and with a lot of culture and
life inside. We stayed in an apartment for guest teachers
and we ate at the students’canteen. Every evening there
where interesting concerts like Corsican singers,
Lithuania’s women choir…
The two things that impressed me the most were
listening to liturgical music in Orthodox churches and
the great banquets.
When I went into the Orthodox churches, the wax
smell and the incense and the people praying, and the
view a little bit smoked, with the light crossing the
coloured round glass windows, reminded me of a Harry
Potter´s movie.
The banquets are the other thing that touched me
deeply. Over the banquet they have a very long and
old ritual, where a man called Tamadá who has some
responsibility in the community, makes a talk to the
guests, about their country and how important the
European people were after the war.
Finally, my impression is that on the one hand, you see
very friendly and warm people working hard, with an
ancient culture, but now perhaps unhappy about the
war with the Russians. And on the other hand, very
happy about their heritage and their new own projects.
I really enjoyed my trip.
