documentaries A Swiss documentary film was honoured for the first time with the European Film Award – Prix ARTE for Best European Documentary Film 2009: “The Sound Of Insects”. This prestigious award for director Peter Liechti, together with the World Cinema Directing Award for Christian Frei’s “Space Tourists” in Sundance, have put Swiss documentary filmmaking as a whole in the spotlight. Vadim Jendreyko’s film “Die Frau mit den 5 Elefanten”, which won the Swiss Film Prize «Quartz 2010», has enjoyed success at home and abroad, with sales already over 27’000 tickets. Once again, Switzerland has lived up to its excellent international reputation in this genre. Twenty-eight Swiss documentary films were produced in 2009. Eleven of these were debut films, bearing witness to continuity and renewal. The decline in attendance figures in 2009 – with the sale of 135’000 tickets for documentary film productions instead of 230’000 in the previous year – was followed by an exceptionally strong start in 2010: seven films have already booked sales of over 10’000 tickets. Le film «La femme aux 5 éléphants» de Vadim Jendreyko, récompensé par le Prix du Cinéma Suisse «Quartz 2010», réussit l’exploit de cumuler une carrière internationale et un succès dans les salles de Suisse, où plus de 27’000 spectateurs l’ont déjà vu. 28 documentaires helvétiques sortaient sur les écrans en 2009, parmi eux onze premiers films. Ceci témoigne à la fois de la continuité et du renouveau. Aux résultats 2009 en baisse dans les salles de cinéma – 135’000 entrées contre 230’000 l’année précédente pour le documentaire – suit un démarrage très fort pour l’année 2010: sept films dépassent déjà les 10’000 entrées. Short film productions contributed markedly to the international awareness and success of Swiss filmmaking. Forty short film productions from Switzerland – 14 of which were animation films – were honoured with awards in 2009. This represented over half (56%) of all awards presented to Swiss film productions and amounted to monetary awards totalling CHF 261’000. The Swiss short film scene has become increasingly transnational: coproductions primarily with European countries were created, for example, when Swiss directors completed their studies at film schools abroad and produced their graduation films in and with Switzerland. They benefited thereafter from such a network with subsequent works. Illustrating this trend are the multiaward-winning short film productions “Polar”, “Ich bin’s Helmut” and “Miramare”. The short film genre has enjoyed an ever-larger audience in Switzerland, also as a result of the Short Film Night Tour organised by SWISS FILMS. Les milieux du court métrage suisse travaillent davantage en traversant les frontières: des coproductions, avec notamment les pays européens, voient le jour, par exemple quand une réalisatrice ou un réalisateur suisse fait une école de cinéma à l’étranger, produit son film de fin d’études en partenariat ou depuis la Suisse et profite ensuite de son réseau pour d’autres travaux. Les courts métrages «Polar», «Ich bin’s Helmut» et «Miramare», plusieurs fois primés, témoignent de cette tendance. En Suisse, les courts métrages trouvent un écho grandissant dans les cinémas. La Tournée de la Nuit du Court métrage organisée par SWISS FILMS y contribue. L’agence de promotion teste de nouveaux formats de projection pour sa distribution. Ainsi, des courts métrages peuvent être diffusés dans 98% des salles de cinéma suisse par voie numérique. In der Schweiz finden die Kurzfilme eine wachsende Zuschauerzahl, wozu die von SWISS FILMS organisierte Kurzfilmnacht-Tour beiträgt. Die Promotionsagentur testet für ihren Verleih digitale Projektionsformate. Damit können Kurzfilme in 98% der Kinosäle in der Schweiz direkt eingespeist werden.
