2 Facilities Mavis Triebel stated that the problem with the door locks in the Ruby Fuller Building could be handled by a work order. Faculty Development/Welfare Sheila Guillot reported that the committee will be coming back with the recommended qualifications for the delegate attending the “Great Teaching Roundup”. Faculty Social Functions Susan Gregory reported there are several options available for the coming months. “The Christmas Carol” will be in November, “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” in February, “Of Mice and Men” in April, and “Chicago” in April. Please get in touch with Susan to express your interest in attending any of these events. David Sorrells invited interested persons to attend the “Renaissance Festival” on the second weekend in October. Janet Hamilton stated that Ken Burns will be speaking at the Lutcher Theater in Orange on October 17 as part of the Lecture Series of the LSC-Orange campus. Old Business The chair appointed Kim Jones as an additional member to the “Relay for Life” committee. David Sorrells, chair of the LSC-PA Relay for Life Committee, reported that the committee will be considering fund raising projects to finance our team at their next meeting. New Business The Chair introduced Creig Miller, adjunct voting member and Helen Dupre, staff non-voting member. These two members were elected by their colleagues in an election held in September and will serve through the September 2008 meeting of the Senate. Miller will serve on the Academic Issues and Facilities Committees and Helen Dupre will serve on the Faculty/Staff Relations Committee. The Chair announced that Development Leave applications are due for 2008 or 2009 to the Department Chairs by October 12. Those interested in applying should get their applications to Sheila Guillot prior to that date for their review. Janet Tawney requested that Security at night be improved. There have been instances of teachers being locked in the building. The Chair requested the Facilities Committee to investigate this problem. Janet Hamilton requested that cross walks be painted on Procter Street from the Allied Health Building to the Performing Arts Center. There is a fear that a student is going to have an accident in this area. This item was also assigned to the Facilities Committee to pass on to the Campus Safety Committee. Reports Lamar University-Beaumont Mavis Triebel reported that President Jimmy Simmons will address the Beaumont Senate at their meeting on October 3, 2007 with his State of the University address. At their
3 September meeting goals were set for the 2007-2008 Senate to include salary and equity, faculty development leaves and to improve communication Flower Fund David Sorrells reported that the Flower Fund has $50 in the account and he has received approximately $100 today. Gene Byrd thanked the Senate for the flowers that were sent during his recent illness. Executive Committee Nancy Cammack, president, gave the Executive Committee Report. Dr. Monroe discussed the following: During Hurricane Humberto, we suffered some minor damage including the loss of a 75-year old palm tree near library as well as some windows in Armory, water blown under some doors, and then debris removal for about a total of $25,000. About one half of that amount was overtime pay to employees worked Thursday- Sunday in preparing the campus for our return on Monday morning. Nancy Cammack thanked administration for keeping faculty informed of the closing of our campus in a timely fashion. The Solid Gold Rock & Roll Show was held as planned on Saturday evening in the Parker Center with about 700 persons in attendance. This attendance figure is about the same as the previous year. Bill Worsham and Dr. Monroe met this past week at the Mount Pleasant North Texas Community College concerning the Regional Junior College Association, Region 14. This organization meets every 6 months. We made and were granted a request to move LSCPA to Division 1 status, to begin in the 2008-2009 season. We have been playing school teams in this division while classified as a Division 3 team. This request which raised LSCPA’s level of competition was deemed necessary to attract quality players. Housing has been another issue in attracting quality players for a competitive team. We currently have four athletic students living in the Lamar Beaumont dormitories per an agreement. Now we can award our athletics students scholarships based on scholastic achievement but not athletic scholarships per se. As reported last month, we are upgrading our 10-year master plan with the assistance of the SHW group from Dallas as our consulting firm. One of the items under consideration is dormitory space. We are seeing the need for living space for our athletes and for students enrolling in the commercial music program. The music program is creating a huge outreach beyond this area. Having dormitory space would also make us more competitive. Our Centennial Committee is meeting weekly with Dr. Charles Gongre as the chair of that committee. We will use the calendar year of 2009 to commemorate our 100 years rather than the school year of 09-10. Currently the committee is seeking a theme that will look both at the past and to the future. The Motiva expansion has been approved. This will bring many new jobs to the area and will impact us both in a positive and a negative way. We are currently training construction workers through the Technical Division. A $250,000 grant
