FOREWORD
This story takes place in the late 1860s. The American
Civil War was over. At that time, there was not enough beef
in some parts of the United States. In Texas, though, there
were huge cattle herds. Texas ranchers hired cowboys to
bring the cattle together. The cowboys then led the herds to
markets in the north. The routes the cowboys followed were
called cattle trails. The trip north was called a cattle drive.
This story happens on the Goodnight-Loving Trail. The
trail began in Texas. It went north to Wyoming. The “long
drive” on a cattle trail was hard. Many cattle drives took
months. Some drives had 10 cowboys, 50 horses, and 3,000
cattle. The trip was dangerous. The cowboys had to cross big
rivers. They faced rattlesnakes and robbers. Sometimes there
were stampedes.
