A Scare and a Joke Soon James met one of the wranglers. But the meeting did not go well. The wrangler rode by, and James said hello. Then two things happened. First, a rattlesnake shot out from under a rock. Then James’s horse got frightened. It wheeled and jumped. James was able to stay on the horse, checking its frantic movement. But he yelled out “Rattlesnake!” James’s voice sounded frightened. James was angry with himself. He didn’t want to sound scared. The wrangler rode over to James. “Are you scared of a little rattlesnake” the wrangler said. “You ARE a beginner!” Then the wrangler rode off. He left James in a cloud of dust. James felt his face turn red. He was ashamed. A rattlesnake scares James’s horse. 7
The cowboys sit around the campfire. Later, James told William what had happened. “That wrangler’s name is Ben,” William said. “Ben will argue with anyone.” Then William added, “You must be tough on the trail, James. You must make the cowboys respect you.” James still felt ashamed. But later he noticed another thing. When Ben came to get supper, William gave him only dry bits of food from the bottom of the pot. That night was James’s first campfire. The cowboys sang songs and told stories. Once, James saw Ben looking at him. James was afraid that Ben would tell the other wranglers about the rattlesnake. But Ben said nothing to the others. No one teased James about the snake. A cowboy stood up and shouldered his bedroll. “It’s time for me to get into my sleeping bag,” he said. “Morning will be here very soon.” 8
