1. 7th Annual Department of Psychiatry Clinical Day - Friday May 30th

Mark Friday May 30th on your calendars for the 7th Annual Department of Psychiatry
Clinical Day at Robson Square Media Centre. Please be aware the conference is one week
earlier than in previous years to accommodate other coming CME events. Dr. Howard Feldman
opens our day with a keynote address on new developments in the diagnosis of Dementia. Every
program/division in our Department has sponsored outstanding speakers with the latest in a host
of topics - as outlined in the attached brochure. The conference is now open for early

2. Dr. Roger Freeman Winner of 2007 Dr. Parminder Singh Award of Distinction
Earlier this year Dr. Roger Freeman received the 2007 Dr. Parminder Singh Award of Distinction.
The relationship between community and hospital-based pediatricians and sub-specialists plays a
significant role in the health outcomes of BC children and youth. Each year, the BC Pediatric Society, in
co-operation with the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation, is pleased to present this award which
recognizes the value of this interrelationship.

3. Women’s Health Research Network – Call for Poster Abstracts

Women’s Health Research Network - Summer Institute 2008
Bridging silos in women’s health research:Forging connections across disciplines
and diversities
Call for Poster Abstracts
The Women’s Health Research Network is pleased to announce a call for poster abstracts for our
upcoming Summer Institute, to be held May 1st and 2nd, 2008 in Victoria, British Columbia.
Posters will be displayed in a public area on May 1 st so that all who attend will have an
opportunity to view and discuss them between sessions and during the evening reception.
We invite poster presentations focused on original research in any area of women’s health and
gender and diversity health research, including basic science, clinical, health promotion,
epidemiology, social sciences, community-based, health policy, and health services research.
Abstracts will be reviewed for originality of research and relevance to the Summer Institute
themes and objectives. Recently presented work is welcomed. Students and emerging
researchers are strongly encouraged to submit abstracts. Click here for details.

For those of you with questions about how the UBC signature process fits with the online CIHR
ResearchNet application process, please read on.
Please continue to use the same internal UBC signature process that you’ve always used.
The difference is that you submit your CIHR Operating Grant application online through
ResearchNet and only the CIHR signature pages need to be couriered to Ottawa.
So, you will still need to walk around with hard copies to obtain your Department Head, Dean and
University/Office of Research Services signatures. Please refer to the ORS signature policy
(http://www.ors.ubc.ca/policies/sigpol.htm - “Application for Research Funding” and “CIHR
ResearchNet Procedures”) for specific details.
If you’re in the Faculty of Medicine, don’t forget to include your FoM Cover Sheet
(http://www.med.ubc.ca/__shared/assets/Grant_Application_Cover_Sheet21.doc), and remember there’s a
2-day turnaround for the Dean’s signature.
ORS has a 1-day turnaround and will call you for pick-up when the signatures are ready. Then,
submit electronically via ResearchNet and courier the signature pages to Ottawa.

7. Paramedic Academy Call for Researchers & Upcoming CIHR Competitions
1. Paramedic Academy Call for Research Associates

The Paramedic Academy is actively seeking researchers who are interested in becoming
a member of the Applied Research Community as a Research Associate. If you are
interested please email mark.friesen@ubc.ca for further information.
2. Upcoming CIHR Competition – STIHR Funding and Training Grant
The Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research is undergoing an external review of
its entire personnel program – scholars and trainees. The rationale for the review is to
assure the MSFHR Board that MSFHR has the best strategies, structures, processes and
human resources in place to demonstrate value for money. Pending the outcome of the
review (which is scheduled for May 2008), the MSFHR Board can make no budgetary
commitments to initiatives such as partnership with CIHR on its Strategic Training
Initiatives in Health Research call.
MSFHR will continue to run our trainee competition this Fall and Junior Graduate
Students, Senior Graduate Students and Post-Doctoral Fellows, affiliated with STIHRs
are eligible to apply to our competition. If you require further details, go to www.msfhr.org
8. Thank You from the Food Bank – attachment
Attached is a "thank you" from the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society and wanted to share it
with you. Thank you to everyone who assisted with this (what turned out to be BIG) project and

ABOUT OUR KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Dr. Howard Feldman
Howard Feldman, MD, is Professor
and Head of the Division of Neurology,
University of British Columbia
and Vancouver Coastal
Health, Vancouver, Canada. He is
the Director of the Clinic for Alzheimer
Disease (AD) and Related
Disorders at UBC Hospital and
holds the Fisher Family and Alzheimer
Society of British Columbia
Endowed Professorship for
Research in Alzheimer’s Disease.
He is an Adjunct Professor at the
McGill Centre for Studies in Aging
in Montreal.
Dr. Feldman has made important
contributions to his field with his
original research in the areas of
mild cognitive impairment, frontal
temporal dementia and clinical
diagnostic/therapeutic trials in
AD. He has been principal investigator
for a number of large international
studies with cholinesterase
inhibitors and other
experimental therapeutics in AD.
He has over 250 publications including
over 100 peer-reviewed
papers. He has lectured globally
and received numerous awards
for his research and clinical work,
including having his contributions
profiled in Lancet Neurology
in 2007.
