The Strategic Plan 2006-2015 for <strong>the</strong> National System <strong>of</strong> Protected<br />

Areas <strong>of</strong> <strong>Ecuador</strong> <strong>in</strong>cludes a 35 million US dollar capitalization target<br />

for <strong>the</strong> ‘protected areas fund’ (fap) by 2010 as an essential component<br />

to achieve f<strong>in</strong>ancial susta<strong>in</strong>ability. This amount will enable <strong>the</strong><br />

‘protected areas fund’ (fap) to provide fund<strong>in</strong>g for all <strong>of</strong> <strong>Ecuador</strong>’s<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ental protected areas. This assumes that government contributions<br />

will rema<strong>in</strong> at <strong>the</strong>ir current levels.<br />

Institutional Streng<strong>the</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> National System <strong>of</strong> Protected Areas<br />

Our activities <strong>in</strong> this area <strong>in</strong>clude efforts to streng<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> capacity<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> National System <strong>of</strong> Protected Areas to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>Ecuador</strong>’s national biodiversity heritage through four major<br />

approaches:<br />

• Support for strategy development and implementation <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> National System <strong>of</strong> Protected Areas.<br />

• Development <strong>of</strong> improved management <strong>in</strong>struments, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

guidel<strong>in</strong>es for more effective day-to-day control<br />

and surveillance <strong>of</strong> protected areas.<br />

• Contributions to <strong>the</strong> analysis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> national system’s f<strong>in</strong>anc<strong>in</strong>g<br />

needs, and <strong>in</strong>novative solutions for susta<strong>in</strong>able fund<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

• Analysis <strong>of</strong> and recommendations for cost efficiency <strong>in</strong> protected<br />

area management, impact monitor<strong>in</strong>g and evaluation.<br />
