<strong>Maharaj</strong> <strong>lived</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>called</strong><br />
<strong>MEDIEVAL</strong> <strong>Period</strong>.<br />
In th<strong>is</strong> period Monarchy or Rule of<br />
K<strong>in</strong>gs prevailed.Instead of welfare<br />
of subjects, many of the k<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
pursued their own pleasures and<br />
enjoyments.<br />
But some k<strong>in</strong>gs are famous <strong>in</strong> h<strong>is</strong>tory for their benevolent rule<br />
i.e. they were look<strong>in</strong>g after the welfare of their subjects.<br />
Benevolent rulers :-<br />
Moghul Emperor Akbar <strong>in</strong> the North,<br />
Emperor Kr<strong>is</strong>hnadevraya of Vijaynagar<br />
and<br />
<strong>Shivaji</strong> <strong>Maharaj</strong> of Maharashtra.<br />

establ<strong>is</strong>hed Swaraj<br />
<strong>in</strong> Maharashtra.<br />

Nearly 400 Years before <strong>Shivaji</strong> <strong>Maharaj</strong>, Maharashtra<br />
was not free.<br />
Largly it was ruled by two Sultans:-<br />
Nizamshah of Ahmadnagar<br />
and<br />
Adilshah of Bijapur.<br />
<strong>The</strong>se two were sworn<br />
enemies of each other.<br />
In Maharashtra there were many Watandars like<br />
Deshmukhs and Deshpandes who owned Jagirs.<strong>The</strong>y<br />
loved only their Jagirs and not their country.<br />

sultans as well Watandars<br />

Not safe<br />

homes.<br />
Not able to celebrate<br />
festivals or worship their<br />
gods openly and freely.<br />
Because of all th<strong>is</strong>, m<strong>is</strong>rule prevailed everywhere. People<br />
were unhappy and tired of th<strong>is</strong> oppression.<br />
<strong>Shivaji</strong> <strong>Maharaj</strong> saw all th<strong>is</strong> and to br<strong>in</strong>g happ<strong>in</strong>ess to the<br />
people ,he undertook the noble task of establ<strong>is</strong>h<strong>in</strong>g Swaraj <strong>in</strong><br />
Maharashtra.<br />
