DEAR FRIENDS
While summer draws to a close
and many of us are returning
from restful vacations, I am truly
gratified to reflect on all that has
been achieved, even during the
slower-paced months. This is due in
large part to you – our wonderful,
faithful friends who are continually
volunteering, advocating and
supporting our mission. Your
energy, enthusiasm and willingness
to share your talents are what make
it possible for us to care for our
community on so many levels.
It is my distinct pleasure to share
with you the recent dedication of
the Perry Chapel at Dr. P. Phillips
Hospital which took place on June
16 (page 5). Cindy and Bill Perry are
very special to me, the Foundation
and our entire organization. For
nearly 25 years they have quietly
and lovingly helped create an
atmosphere of hospitality, peace and
genuine ministry to others through
their philanthropic leadership
and volunteerism on numerous
committees and boards. No two
individuals have more greatly
influenced our culture of caring,
and their legacy will touch countless
individuals and families who walk
through our doors.
I am pleased to introduce some
new friends as well! Runway to
Hope (page 6) is a local non-profit
organization whose mission is to
provide direct support to children
and families in our Central Florida
community who have been impacted
by pediatric cancer. Also, Hyundai’s
Hope on Wheels is joining us for the
second consecutive year with major
support for our pediatric oncology
program. I am grateful that both
organizations have chosen to partner
with Arnold Palmer Hospital for
Children. Their generosity will help
bring hope and healing to our young
patients – and aid our physicians in
their search for a cure.
From my perspective through three
decades of hospital administration,
perhaps there is no stronger testament
than physicians who choose to
philanthropically support the hospital
in which they work. Pathology
Specialists, PA (page 3) has pledged
a major gift toward the expansion of
ORMC. Partnerships such as theirs
– in caring for our patients and in
building for our tomorrow – bring
new energy and anticipation for what
we can achieve next.
Here’s to the cooler months!
Sincerely,
The sold out, black tie gathering raises $260,000 for the
only Level One Trauma Center in Central Florida.
On May 15, 2011, more than 700 guests gathered in the
Grand Court of The Mall at Millenia for the sixth annual
ONE NIGHT event presented by the CNL Financial Group,
Inc., which raised awareness and funds for Orlando Regional
Medical Center’s (ORMC) Level One Trauma Center.
This year’s attendees heard the moving story of David Humes
as told by his family. David broke his neck while diving from
a boat and was saved from drowning by his daughters. He
was airlifted to the Trauma Center where a team of 15-20
specialists were ready and waiting for his arrival.
Although paralyzed from the neck down, David is able
to breathe independently from a ventilator because of a
diaphragmatic pacemaker, one of the first implanted in
Florida. Thanks to this life-changing device, David does
not need to live in a long-term care facility, but at home
where he can be active in the lives of his family and friends.
Though often associated with diving injuries, spinal cord
injuries are far more common in motor vehicle crashes.
Motor vehicle accidents and falls are the two most
common causes of traumatic injuries.
Whatever the injury, Central Florida’s only Level One
Trauma Center is ready to begin life-saving care the
moment a trauma patient arrives at ORMC. An operating
room is always ready and numerous subspecialty
physicians are immediately available. Though costly, this
level of “readiness” defines trauma care, and often makes
the difference between life and death.
“ONE NIGHT and generous philanthropic friends are
critical to support this life-saving care and to enable the
Trauma Center to keep pace with the growing needs of our
community,” says Jeremy Gamble, vice president, Orlando
Health Foundation. “We are so grateful to CNL and to all
of our event sponsors and donors.”
Tracy Schmidt, CFO, CNL Financial Group, Inc., and his family, pictured with a
trauma nurse, announced their personal gift to support the Level One Trauma Center,
in addition to CNL’s corporate support, during the evening’s program.
“As business leaders, we realize trauma happens – to our family, our
associates and our friends. Trauma can happen to anyone and, when it
does, having the Level One Trauma Center ready and waiting saves lives.
That is why we are honored to support ONE NIGHT.”
Tracy Schmidt, CFO, CNL Financial Group, Inc.

Louis and Nancy Beasley
Physicians with Pathology Specialists,
PA, have provided pathology services
to ORMC for over 60 years and
are no strangers to philanthropic
giving. The group made a multi-year
pledge during the campaign for
MD Anderson Cancer Center Orlando
to support the construction of the
Charles Lewis Pavilion. Now the group
has pledged $200,000 toward the
expansion of ORMC.
While final plans are months away, the
expansion includes a focus on cardiac
services as well as enhancements to
our trauma and emergency services. It
is expected to be the largest expansion
in Orlando Health’s history, providing
the facilities needed to support an
ever higher level of care with new and
larger patient rooms, intensive care
units, and operating rooms. It will also
help integrate key services to improve
the delivery of care and the patient
experience at ORMC.
Many patients are touched by the work
of pathologists. Whether it is blood
work or tissue analysis, these doctors
make important contributions to each
patient’s care. The physicians work
primarily at ORMC, where the main
lab is located and most specimens
are analyzed, though they serve all
Orlando Health hospitals and may
be present for certain procedures
at Arnold Palmer Hospital, Winnie
Palmer Hospital, Dr. P. Phillips
Hospital and South Seminole Hospital.
The following friends and family
Tribute gifts are a wonderful
way to recognize the important
work that physicians do for our
community and the patients
they serve. Dr. Foss is a pediatric
radiologist with Medical Center
Radiology Group, which has
been a long-time, generous
philanthropic supporter of
Orlando Health. It is a privilege
to recognize Dr. Foss for his
commitment to providing care
at the highest level to the patients
we serve.
VOLUNTEER HIGHLIGHT
Team Members and
Volunteers Raise
$380,000
Funds support areas of greatest
need at Orlando Health
This year the Florida Legislature
passed, and Governor Ric Scott
signed, a state budget that
significantly reduced Medicaid
reimbursements to Orlando
Health. That made this year’s Team
Member Giving Campaign even
more important. We are proud to
share that 3,500 team members
and volunteers raised $380,000 of
much-needed additional funding
for Orlando Health.
Mary McKinnon, director,
Magnet Recognition and External
Nursing Relations, and co-chair,
Team Member Giving Campaign,
says, “It is exciting to see team
members and volunteers go
above and beyond their job
duties to give financially to our
organization. We do not turn
anyone away from receiving
care. How many businesses or
organizations can say they provide
services to their customers or
patients regardless of their ability
to pay? Philanthropy is crucial
because our income stream is
continually decreasing due to
rising uncompensated care and
future funding cuts. Yet we must
continue to provide the highest
level of care to our community.”

Perry Chapel at Dr. P. Phillips Hospital
Local business leaders and
philanthropists, Cindy and Bill
Perry have been friends and major
supporters of Orlando Health for
nearly 25 years. Their loving influence
and generosity have brought comfort
and healing to our patients and their
families through their philanthropy
and volunteer service on the
Foundation’s board of directors, the
Dr. P. Phillips Hospital Hospitality
Advisory Council, and Cindy’s
volunteering at Dr. P. Phillips Hospital.
In the 1990s Bill and Cindy
purchased the furnishings for the
Hubbard House on the downtown
campus. In 2002, they donated
$500,000 to build The Cynthia C. &
William E. Perry Pavilion at
Dr. P. Phillips Hospital. At the same
time, they gave $500,000 to create
the Cynthia C. and William E. Perry
Chapel at MD Anderson Cancer
Center Orlando.
Each one of these projects has also
been a gift of love as Cindy and
Bill were personally involved with
the project design and selection of
artists, working closely with staff to
ensure caring for patients and guests
was always the focus.
This year, Cindy and Bill made a gift
to establish the Perry Chapel at Dr. P.
Phillips Hospital which opened June
16 with a special dedication.
Their pastor, Bill Barnes, St. Luke’s
United Methodist Church, blessed
the chapel, sharing, “Whatever
one’s faith, this chapel is dedicated
to providing a special place where
individuals can seek and find peace
and meaning.”
Cindy and Bill’s vision is shared with
their children and grandchildren.
This chapel is named for their family
to signify that it is a continuing
gift from their children and
grandchildren. Cindy and Bill have
also recently made a planned gift to
ensure support of hospitality across
Orlando Health in perpetuity.
One of the most meaningful gifts
Cindy and Bill have given Dr. P.
Phillips Hospital and Orlando Health
is the gift of family involvement for
generations to come.
Golden South Classic Raises $85,000 for
Pediatric Sports Medicine Program
adidas® three-meet series,
“Golden Stripes,” elevates Golden
South Classic to national prominence
The 35th Annual Bert M. Warden’s
Golden South Classic, hosted every
spring at The First Academy’s
Warden Stadium, held an extra level
of excitement this year. What began
years ago as a local high school event
is now officially one of the three
prestigious national track and field
events presented by adidas.
“Although Golden South has fewer
athletes than the other two meets in
our series, we selected it due to the
caliber of athletes and the strong
philanthropic tie to a respected
pediatric sports medicine program,”
says Mikal Peveto, adidas®.
With some of the best high school
athletes traveling from across the
Southeast, and as far away as Canada,
Mexico, the Caribbean and South
America, the event has produced
more than 35 Olympians, with 12
winning the Olympic gold. The
event raises important funds in
support of the Pediatric Sports
Medicine Program at Arnold Palmer
Hospital. This program provides
young athletes with treatment and
rehabilitation, as well as education in
prevention of athletic injuries.
SeaWorld Orlando hosted athletes
and coaches on Friday night for an
educational expo during which they
participated in special presentations.
Special thanks to our founding
donor, the Bert W. Martin
Foundation; presenting sponsor,
adidas®; and event host, The First
Academy. Additional major sponsors
of this year’s event include: Steeple
IN MEMORIAM
GEORGE EDWARD GEANS
July 9, 1947 — July 17, 2011
The Orlando Health family is deeply saddened with the tragic death of George Edward Geans on July 17. For 17 years, George served
as a staff chaplain and most recently as the manager of the Spiritual Care Department of Orlando Regional Medical Center.
George was also a great friend of the Foundation and a frequent contributor to our publications. He wrote this last column
shortly before his death. In honor and loving memory of our friend, we have chosen to publish this last inspirational message.
As the manager of the Spiritual Care
Department at ORMC, I participate
in daily service rounds with several
managers. Our rounding includes
personal visits with patients to learn
ways we can improve our service. It
offers us an opportunity to personally
meet our patients and hear about their
hospital experience.
This past summer, I visited a patient
who had been admitted from an
assisted living facility. I had seen
her for several days and our visits
were always very cordial. On my last
visit with her I called the dietary
department to clarify her lunch order.
While on the phone, I introduced
myself as “Chaplain George Geans.”
When I hung up, the patient looked
puzzled. She asked, “Did I hear you
say you’re a chaplain?” I told her I
was. And then in a quiet, quivering
voice, she said, “I need prayer. Will you
pray with me?” I told her I would be
happy to pray with her. I explored her
concerns and then offered a prayer in
keeping with her faith tradition.
10
I Need Prayer
In that simple exchange, hearing this
patient’s need for prayer reminded me
that at one level or another, we are all
patients, and we all need prayer. It has
been said that prayer is the universal
ground for all faith traditions. It is true.
Even the most cursory review of prayers
recorded in sacred texts throughout the
world will bear witness to the beauty
and diversity of religious expression.
Frederick Buechner, in his book,
“Listening to Your Life,” suggests,
“Everybody prays whether he thinks
of it as praying or not. The odd silence
you fall into when something very
beautiful is happening or something
very good or bad. The ah-h-h! that
sometimes floats up out of you as out
of a Fourth of July crowd when the
sky-rocket bursts over the water. The
stammer of pain at somebody else’s
pain. The stammer of joy at somebody
else’s joy. Whatever words or sounds
you use for sighing with over your own
life, these are all prayers in their way.”
There is a Black Gospel song that says,
“Not my brother, not my sister, but it’s
me, oh Lord, standing in the need of
prayer.” So true. However we
George E. Geans
understand and connect with our
spiritual power, we all need it. I
commend the practice of prayer as one
of the more powerful spiritual resources
for healthy aging. I have learned in
my work at Orlando Health that it
promotes personal wholeness in ways
medicine cannot touch. The patient I
visited said it well. “I need prayer.”
