A Letter from Our
PTA President
Dear Canyon Rim Parents,
Welcome to the 2012-2013 school year!
I am looking forward to my first year as
your PTA president and to continuing the
momentum of the previous years. Our
first PTA newsletter is here! Thanks to
Jessica Levy’s hard work and talent, we all
receive a monthly newsletter highlighting
upcoming events and important information.
For daily and weekly information,
please visit CanyonRimPTA.com. Another
great way to be informed is to attend
our monthly PTA meetings. Our
next meeting is Thursday, October 4 th at
9:00 a.m. in the Multi Purpose Room.
Please attend and meet new people and
help us guide your PTA with new ideas to
better our school.

Review
Our first month of school is already behind
us and a lot has happened. We had a
very successful Membership Drive and
Direct Donation campaign. Thank you to
Rosa Covarrubias our Membership Chair
and her crew for their hard work. Back
to School Night was informative as always
and Student Council elections have already
been held.

As a PTA we are continuously planning
fun events for our kids and supporting
our teachers and school through fundraising
and volunteering, but we would like to
introduce an opportunity for us as a
school community to partner with a really
great charity on a continuing basis. Please
read the enclosed article about Grants
Wishes. We wanted to choose something
for us to give back year-round with
very little effort both time wise and financially,
yet make a huge impact for children,
by children. The most important component
is that it is something our kids will
understand and directly help with. We
have Canyon Rim kids who are currently
or have previously been touched by this
charity through CHOC.
I hope everyone has a great October participating
in all the fun activities we have
planned. If you have any questions, please
do not hesitate to contact me.

October is always a fun month at Canyon
Rim! The kids have their Fall Costume
Day and Fall Party. Our Red Ribbon
Week with all its daily activities is at the
end of October along with our Family
Carnival on October 26 (see Page 2 for
details).

Canyon Rim Annual “Under the Big Top”
Carnival Slated for Friday, October 26
M
ark your calendars! The Annual
Canyon Rim Carnival is set for Friday.
October 26 from 5:00-9:00 pm. With the theme:
“Under the Big Top,” this year’s carnival will be
packed with a ton of fun, including several carnival
games including the popular crazy hair booth, a game
truck, DJ, photo booth, face painting, fortune teller,
clowns, balloon animal artist, cake walk and more!
New to this year’s carnival are the Dogzilla and
Chronic Taco food trucks for dinner, plus cotton
candy and kettle corn vendors.
The amazing silent auction in the Multi Purpose Room
will also be taking place with a variety of must-have
items and experiences to bid on.
As part of the Silent Auction, between October 1-5,
the Carnival Committee will be collecting donated
items from each classroom. Themes per grade level
are as follows:
Kinder / transitional kindergarten….”Gift Card
Frenzy”
First grade….”Pamper Your Pet”
Second grade….”California Grillin’”
Third grade….”Great Outdoors”
Fourth grade….”Sports Spectacular”
Fifth grade….”Family Fun Night”

We are in need of volunteers for the evening, as well
as donated items for the silent auction.

PTA Membership &
Direct Donation
Numbers are in...
The numbers are officially in… PTA
Membership has increased 13% this
year, while Direct Donations raised
$17,438. While these are great numbers,
please note that it is never too
late to join PTA or make a donation.
As noted in the PTA packets sent
home with your children, the first
lower and upper grade classrooms to
return 100% of their membership envelopes
would win a pizza party for
the entire class. This year’s winners
are Mrs. Haitbrink and Mrs. Yee’s
classes!
The winning class with the highest
percentage of families donating to Direct
Donation was Mrs. Mann’s Kindergarten
class. They will each receive
20 free carnival tickets.
New PTA-Sponsored
Music Program Kicks Off
C
anyon Rim PTA is
bringing a new music
program to school. With a September
24th kick-off, the fun, customized,
interactive introduction to music is
being provided to each classroom
once a week for eight weeks. Classes
are taking place during the school day
by professional instructors from Orange
County Music Academy
(ocmusicacademy.com). With music
programs being eliminated from
schools given budget cuts across the
state, this is an important program,
fully funded by our PTA.
Following is a run-down of the types
of music instruction that will be taught
across grade levels:
Kindergarten & 1st Grade

An Introduction to Music

Box Tops
for
Education
O
ne of the easiest ways that we make
money for our school is through the
Box Tops for Education program,
which several major manufacturers participate.
Families can clip off the box tops from everything
from cereal boxes to frozen waffles, and
then turn them into the school. Canyon Rim is
able to redeem these Box Tops for money that
goes to important school programs. The class
that turns in the most Box Tops will receive a
party of their choice! (such as pizza, donuts
and juice, or ice cream / root beer float).

pursue artistic expression
through participation in its
annual arts Reflections Program.
This contest is an opportunity for
students to create works of art for
fun and recognition. Using their
artistic vision to portray the theme
“The Magic of a Moment...”
students can create and submit
works of art in one or more of the
six areas:
visual arts (which includes
art forms such as
drawing, painting, print
making, and collage)
Photography
Literature
musical composition
dance choreography
film production
Special artist (this new
division is limited to students
whose physical, cognitive
or mental health
challenges meet the guidelines
in the American Disabilities
Act)
The grade divisions for entries are
Primary: kindergarten-grade 2,
Intermediate: grades 3-5, and Middle/Junior:
grades 6-8. Each entry

is the original work of one student
without help from an adult. All
entries will be displayed, and winners
and participants will be recognized
at an awards reception. First
place entries in each division from
Canyon Rim will move on to the
next level of judging.

Supporting Our Community
Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) is dedicated to providing the highest quality family-centered primary and specialty
care to children. Last year more than 238,000 children were treated at CHOC: that’s 1 out of every 10 children in Orange County.
With admissions growing by 124% since 1998, CHOC Orange and CHOC Mission combined rank as the 17th busiest children’s hospital
in the country. With almost 2 million children in our growing community, that’s a lot of reasons to give. Following are two
ways that you can help support CHOC and its young patients...
“Ty’s Army” Team to Participate in
CHOC Walk on October 14

Ty Pacot
Pacot is a first
grader at Canyon
Rim. But instead of going to
class everyday and playing
soccer at recess with his
friends, he is being home
schooled. Ty was diagnosed
with a Medullo Blastoma
brain tumor on June 21, just a
week after completing kindergarten.
It is the most aggressive
brain tumor and had
to be removed
right away. So
far he has undergone
6
weeks of daily
radiation and
will start 6 cycles
of inpatient
chemotherapy.
CHOC has been such an
amazing hospital for Ty and
for his family, walking them
through every step of the
way with care, patience and
understanding. So when they
found out that CHOC has one
main fundraiser per year, the
Pacot Family wanted to do as
much as they could to help.
They created a team: "Ty's
Army" that will participate in
the CHOC Walk on October

14th. It is a 5K walk around
Disneyland and California
Adventure.
Several Canyon Rim students
and parents are walking on
Ty’s Army team. If you or

Canyon Rim Students Can Help
Make a Difference All Year Long
T his year the PTA is
joining with Student Council
to work with a charity
for kids. Grants Wishes supplies small wrapped
Happy Meal and other new inexpensive toys to
CHOC hospital for their treasure boxes. Children
undergoing treatments select a toy following
a procedure to redirect their attention to
something fun and exciting.
PTA has teamed with the kids in Canyon Rim
Student Council to support this year-long initiative
and help them teach their peers and primary
grade students about how they can help
bring a smile to a sick child at CHOC. By choosing
to give up their Happy Meal toy or reminding
mom to pick up a little dollar aisle item at Target,
we are putting the success of this endeavor
directly into the hands of our kids.
As the kids learn about this program in the coming
weeks we anticipate it will create a dialogue
with you, their parents. We hope you will support
this great cause and your children in giving
back.
Following is a list of items that this program accepts.
Note that it is important that any item donated
is new and has not been opened.
Happy Meal Toys, Match Box Cars, Crayons,
Markers, Playdough, Nail polish, Cosmetic samples/
gift with purchases, Hats, Socks, Books,
Notebooks, Coloring Books, Target $1 items or
less, Stuffed Animals. Larger items are also
accepted, including: $5 gift cards, Toys, Dolls,
Oriental Trading Items, Party City Goodie Bag
Treats / Party Favors, etc.
