Dear Canyon Rim Families,
I hope you and your children
enjoyed this year’s fall parade,
their classroom party, and our
first Family Fun Bingo Night. It
was a very nice way to end our
first quarter at Canyon Rim!
Although November is a short
month given our minimum
days and holidays, we have a
newsletter full of information
for you. First, thank you for
bringing in your pennies for
Pennies for Prevention and
participating in Red Ribbon
Week. The pennies we collected
go directly back into our
drug prevention education
program. Also in November,
you have the opportunity to
submit your children’s artwork
for the Reflections program.
The theme this year is
"Together We Can" and the
deadline to submit your entry
is November 5 th .
November is also the time to
reflect on what we are thankful
for in our lives, which is why I
would like to thank the parents,
teachers, and staff for the
countless hours you contribute
to help PTA.
First of all, I would like to
thank the parents who help
PTA at school and at home by
planning family nights, organizing
and contributing to class
parties, managing PTA finances,
creating newsletters, making
flyers, updating our student
directory, editing our web site,
changing our school marquee,
setting up for events such as
Red Ribbon week and Book
Fair, and everything else you
do. Your dedication is much
appreciated and does not go
unnoticed.
Thank you also to our teachers,
staff and Mr. Appling for
always supporting our ideas
and informing the parents of
upcoming events. You make
our job much easier and more
enjoyable. And, last but not
least, a special thank you to
Arturo who does so much for
all of us but never asks for
anything in return. We appreciate
you taking time out of
your very busy work day to
help us whenever we need it.
I hope you have a wonderful
Thanksgiving holiday with your
family and friends.

Reflections Deadline Slated for November 5th
The Annual PTA Reflections Program
is underway, giving Canyon
Rim students the opportunity to
celebrate their talents in a variety
of ways. With a theme of
“Together We Can…” students
have the opportunity to shine in a
variety of categories, including:
Film/Video Production
Dance Choreography
Musical Composition
Photography
Visual Arts
Literature
Students took the applications and
official rules home in October.

2nd Grade

Each month we will put the spotlight on one grade. There are so many exciting activities taking
place each week at Canyon Rim, with many of these activities being PTA funded…
Can You Dig It
The 2nd graders at Canyon Rim discovered
many interesting facts and theories
about dinosaurs and fossils. As a
culminating activity, each 2nd grade
class participated in a simulated dinosaur
dig, held October 7th and 8th.
their fossils, and then carefully took
their precious finds back to school.
This was a memorable hands-on experience.
Canyon Rim’s 2nd graders got to
see what a blast the past can be!
Pretending they were real paleontologists,
they proudly marched over to
Canyon Rim Park. Magically the sand
area by the volleyball court had been
transformed into an archeological dig.
All the students had a true form fossil
that they made out of clay. Some
teachers had half their class bury their
fossils while the other half dug them
up. They then reversed roles. Each student
was sure to leave a small part of
the fossil exposed, so it would be a
successful dig. “Eureka!” was shouted
out by most students as they found

ART MASTER’S SERIES KICKS OFF:
Students Learn About American Artist Jacob Lawrence
L
ast month, Canyon Rim PTA kicked
off its very popular Art Master’s series
for grades K-6. For the first
quarter, the students had a chance to
"meet" 20th century African American artist
Jacob Lawrence (September 7, 1917 – June 9,
2000).
Lawrence is among the best-known twentieth
century African American painters, He was
only in his twenties when his "Migration Series"
depicting the epic migration of African
Americans from the rural South to the urban
North made him nationally famous, with his
series of paintings featured in a 1941 issue of
Fortune Magazine.
Students learned about his unique technique
and style. and created their own masterpieces,
some of which are on display on the office's
bulletin board.

In December, students will be introduced to
the great 17th century Dutch master Rembrandt,
and will learn about the principles of
shading and highlighting. The follow-up art
activity will challenge them to use Rembrandt's
technique or "drawing with light" as
they create their own masterpiece. The third
artist that the children will study is Renoir.
Be sure to ask your children about their experiences
with this important art program.

We would like to thank all of the gracious families who joined Birthday Book Club this
year. You made it possible to purchase 290 new books and AR tests for Canyon Rim's
library. This is the only way Canyon Rim's library is able to purchase new books for the
students! Remember READING IS FUN!!!

Food & Coat Drive Benefitting Local
Orange County Families Slated for November 8-17
6-16 oz of canned meats
8 oz of 100% fruit juice
From November 8-17, all food can be
dropped off in the MPR before school each
day. Last year, we collected enough food for
38 boxes, or 72 children. Our goal this year
is to fill 100 boxes to help 200 children. We
need parent volunteers who are willing to
help place all items into boxes each morning
from 7:45 - 8:30 am. If you can help on any
of these mornings, please contact
asifashah@sbcglobal.net or Mrs. Hughes,
2nd grade teacher in Room 13.
All coats should be clean and gently used. All
ages and all sizes are welcome. They will be
given to various local homeless shelters.
