The Rabbi’s Desk: Hugging Trees
On a recent Friday afternoon, an insurance salesman approached the reception desk at the
office of a potential client. Politely waiting as the receptionist speaks on the phone, he
overhears her say to the person on the other end, ―I’m busy tomorrow night. I’m attending a
family reunion.‖ As she turns to the man waiting for her attention, he offers, ―I don’t mean to
be rude, but I couldn’t help overhearing you. I’m also going to a family reunion tomorrow night!‖ You can
guess what happened next. Two strangers suddenly discover they are, in fact, cousins.
My oldest sister, Cheri, began researching our family tree last fall, perhaps prompted by my father’s illness. (He
is doing quite well, having experienced a full recovery, thank God, and thank you.) My paternal grandfather,
William Scheff, z”l, died when my father was in his early teens. (He was an attorney who never really enjoyed
the practice of law!) After his father’s death, my father lost touch
with the Scheff family. I grew up knowing only my father’s brother and his children. My sister examined public
records, visited cemeteries to get names and dates off headstones, and then started sending inquiries and
introductions to people who she suspected might be related to us. An old picture from the 1920s of the family in
Russia became the key to unlock the doors that opened to new connections. The Scheff (or Sheff) reunion, or
perhaps more appropriately termed ―family introduction‖ (since most of the people to attend that night had
never met in person!), took place in early September. My father and sister attended and met people from all
around the northeast, some of whom had lived as neighbors and worked together for years without ever
knowing they were related.
So what now? My name and face are out there on a family blog, and perhaps I’ll find out that someone I’ve
known for years is, in fact, family. But what about the scores of others who are strangers to me? What does it
mean that there are striking physical and character traits shared by so many of us, despite the genetic, space and
time divides? I asked my sister this question, and she had no answer yet. But this is my conclusion:
Though I never knew my grandfather, I always wanted to have a piece of him. I take pride—and comfort—in
knowing that we were both attorneys (in Boston!) who wanted something else in life. Stories of his kindnesses
and relationships inspire me and shape my existence. My soul is bound up with my name and with others who
are connected to that name, regardless of whether it is spelled ―Scheff‖ of ―Sheff.‖ I am a Scheff, a Sherman, a
Troyan, and many other names I have not yet learned. Best of all, somewhere back in time, I am rooted in the
same place that you are.
That’s a tree I can hug.
From the President’s Pen: Reflect, Renew, Rejoice
Dear Chaverim,
The month of September was a month to Reflect, Renew, and Rejoice. As a teacher, I find the
month of September an opportunity to start fresh. With some anticipation I start a new school
year with new students, new classes, a new schedule and new challenges and opportunities. I
reflect upon the past year, change some strategies that didn’t work so well, improve on lessons
that were successful and look forward to what the coming year will bring. This beginning anew
is one of the true benefits of being a teacher. If all goes well, ten months from now I will rejoice at my students’
successes and achievements and my growth as well.
One strategy I find useful in class is to categorize large concepts into simpler phrases that are easy to remember and
capture the essence of the topic at hand. The words I would choose for this time of year are: REFLECT, RENEW,
and REJOICE. The High Holiday season gave us an opportunity to REFLECT personally and as a community. How
did we act in the past year both as individuals and collectively as a congregation? Were we the people we aspired to
be? Did we take on new challenges or complete those that we set for ourselves and our community the prior year?
Did we keep the promises we made last Rosh Hashanah when we heard the shofar blow, and were we able to commit
ourselves to make new ones this year when we heard the shofar again?
Over this past year, we have had so much to reflect upon and to be proud of at the OJC. We continued to grow
spiritually, educationally, and as a community of volunteers. Now we need to look back at what was successful and
to work on what warrants further attention.
Certainly I would be remiss in my reflections on the High Holiday season if I did not acknowledge and thank those
people who were vital to the preparation and coordination of our services. There are so many individuals to thank,
but for fear of forgetting someone I will not list them individually—you know who you are. On behalf of the entire
congregation, I want to thank Rabbi Scheff, Rabbi Drill, and Cantor Ohring, who continue to provide us with
spiritual and inspiring services. In addition, thank you to the Ritual Committee, to those who davened, accepted
aliyot, read Torah and participated in our services, to the Babysitting Coordinator, to the ―audio-visual crew‖ who set
up the new larger screens, to the gabbaim and the greeters who helped keep a smooth flow of people and
courteousness throughout the holidays. I appreciate the time you have spent during your own holiday for the benefit
of our congregation. Thank you as well to our office staff and custodial staff for all of their hard work during the
holidays and all year long.
I was recently asked what word most describes Rosh Hashanah for me. The answer is RENEWAL. Like the start of
the school year, the High Holidays for me are a time of starting over. We have asked for forgiveness of past sins and
now in a sense start with a new slate. I enjoy spending the time in shul, reconnecting with friends and acquaintances,
and I appreciate the time to be lost in my own thoughts and prayers, renewing my commitment to Judaism. As busy
as this time of year can be, the idea of starting new is refreshing. We all have the chance to renew our commitment to
our community. Last month we sent out volunteer cards, which I hope you have returned. Volunteering in the OJC
and in the larger Jewish community is a perfect way to renew your sense of belonging and to start the year off in a
positive and productive way.
Finally, this is a time to REJOICE. We are so fortunate to have a community that celebrates beyond the three days of
Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Our rejoicing began with the Break Fast, lovingly prepared for us by Arlene
Nathan, Michael Scolnick and their committee. Sukkot provided us with another reason to celebrate together. Once
again the Men’s Club coordinated the construction of our Sukkah and I thank them for that mitzvah. In addition to
the Sukkot service the Sukkot dinner was a beautiful community celebration. Thank you to the Sisterhood, Fran
Friedman and Adele Garber for coordinating the dinner for all of us to enjoy.
As we leave the High Holiday season, I hope that each of us takes the time, to REFLECT on where we’ve been, to
RENEW our bonds and commitments, and most importantly to REJOICE in all that we are, and all that we continue
to be as the OJC community.
B’Shalom,
From the Educational Director’s Desk
When you receive this bulletin, the High Holidays and the festivals will be over. You
will have prayed for a happy, healthy New Year, enjoyed the beauty of Sukkot and
danced with joy on Simchat Torah. But as I write this article there are more than 3
weeks before school will even begin! As you know, this summer I had the privilege to
live and study in Israel for five weeks, which was an opportunity and dream of a
lifetime. Of course, I didn’t get my usual time to “clean out the junk” in my house or
office at the OJC. I did, like always, go through my box of “precious papers” and thought I would share
this letter that has influenced my life. This letter was written to me for my bat mitzvah by my
grandfather, Harry Judelson, of beloved memory, in September of 1969.
My Dear Sandra,
Today you are a woman! As you go through life every chapter will be strange and new. As a child you
were ―boss of the backyard‖ and ―king of the roost.‖ Your loved ones were there to repair your wounds and
soothe your sorrows. Things are different as you start your adventure into adulthood, which will include
laughter and happiness, and sometimes sorrow and pain. You must resolve to be unafraid of life, unafraid of
death, unafraid to be happy and laugh often. To grow requires faith and love and courage. You will realize that
all people are not just, all people are not true. The key to success is not only to win the respect of intelligent
people, but also to appreciate the insights of honest critics. Remember that for every enemy there is a friend, for
every scoundrel there is a hero and bullies are really weak people. Always enjoy the wonders of books and
cherish your love of Judaism. Don’t forget to take time to ponder the eternal mystery of the birds in the sky, the
bees in the sun and the flowers on the green hills. Remember it is far more honorable to fail than to cheat.
Always have faith in your own ideas and the strength not to follow the crowd when everyone is jumping on that
―bandwagon.‖ Listen to all people, but filter what you hear on a screen of truth and take only the good that
comes through. Always sell your brains and brawn to the highest bidder, but never put a price on your heart and
soul. You can do anything you set your heart and mind to do. You will be just as a happy as they think they are,
so adjust yourself to what is. If you can’t have what you want, like what you have. Believe only the best in
others, praise people for what they do and do not criticize them for what they cannot do. When you find fault,
overlook it, because everyone deserves a second chance. Never forget yesterday or tomorrow, but every day try
to look your best, be agreeable, responsive, cheerful and kind. I pray the world will teach you gently but not
coddle you, because only the test of fire makes fine steel.
With All My Love, Grandpa
My grandfather’s insightful, intelligent words (which may have been pilfered from other people’s
writings) have guided me for more than 40 years. You may be asking, why am I sharing the letter in this article?
One reason is that I think the contents are true wisdom for adults and children, the second is that the letter may
shine some light on me, your Educational Director, and the third is because our schools at the OJC are not only
about Jewish education but also about moral education. Unlike in public school where teachers have to teach for
statewide standardized testing, our rabbis and educators have an opportunity to guide our students to be good
moral Jews who take responsibility and uphold the highest standards of fairness, honesty, patience and respect
for themselves and others.
Parents are our Partners! We invite you to come and see how great your children can be at the OJC on
our Open School days on October 19 th , 20 th and 21 st . Please encourage your child to lead a prayer at our
Religious school Erev Shabbat Services on November 5 th . Teamwork makes the dream work!
Iran is Feeling the Pressure
It has been a few months since President Obama signed the Comprehensive Iran Sanctions,
Accountability and Divestment Act. In just that short period of time, there is already strong evidence
that Iranian leaders are feeling the economic pressure.
For example, Lloyd’s of London and other major insurance companies have refused to insure tankers
delivering gasoline to Iran. As a result, fuel imports are dropping—a serious blow to Iran, which
depends on imports for approximately one-third of its domestic gasoline consumption.
There are numerous other examples. Significant numbers of Iranian cargo ships have been unable to
leave Iranian ports because nobody will insure them. The owner of a gasoline tanker told his captain
that he was not allowed to sail to Iran. Several European airports have refused to refuel Iranian
airliners.
What is the predictable effect of all this? Iran must pay a price far above market rate for gasoline—25
percent more, in fact. Companies that are still willing to sell gasoline to Iran are charging a much
higher price in order to compensate for the increased risk of doing business there.
And when the price of gasoline rises, the price of everything rises. Iran’s central bank chief said that in
order for his country to overcome the latest round of sanctions, it must cut down on imports. ―There is
no other way,‖ he said.
On top of all this, major international companies are cutting ties with Iran. Toyota is one of them. The
Japanese carmaker decided to stop its shipments to the Islamic Republic because ―firms continuing to
deal with Iran have come under scrutiny from the U.S. government.‖
Indeed, while Toyota’s business with Iran might technically be legal under existing sanctions laws, the
company does not want to risk its interests in the United States. That, by the way, is exactly the
situation that Iran sanctions laws are supposed to produce.
In the weeks and months ahead, we must make sure that Iran continues to feel the pressure. To do that,
we must continue to work with Congress to ensure that the Obama administration enforces Iran
sanctions laws. Implementation, enforcement and accountability—these methods are the last best hope
we have to peacefully persuade Iran to end its quest for nuclear weapons.
Shout Out to Sisterhood
Sisterhood has many faces: faces of members, faces of activities, faces of involvement. We are Jewish women
wanting much for ourselves, our families, our community.
Sisterhood is one arm of Orangetown Jewish Center and is connected at the heart to the whole of the
community. We share food and fun and learning with each other and with the community. We raise money for
OJC’s needs. We help support our Religious School and provide tzedakah for many organizations. We learn and
teach each other. We challenge ourselves and each other with new ideas and new ways to fulfill tradition.
Join us at the Paid-Up Membership Dinner on October 18. Celebrate Sisterhood and your membership in it.
Rhonda Plawner and Gail Sanders are planning a delicious dinner and wonderful program for the evening.
Thanks to Fran Friedman and Adele Garber for organizing the Sukkot Dinner. This is always a rousing evening
with good food, songs and loads of fun.
Thanks to Rhoda Pochter for facilitating our Book Chat discussion of The Invisible Bridge. The next book, The
Prince of Fire, by Daniel Silva, will be discussed on October 21. The Book Chat group is ongoing and
Men’s Club: The New Year
Every New Year we hope we have been inscribed for health and happiness. Each
New Year is also a time for new beginnings. The Men’s Club begins each Rosh
Hashanah with the construction of our sukkah. Under the able leadership of Jack
Teadore and his team (Karl Hess, Lonnie Jacobs and Arthur Kupferman) the sukkah
―happens.‖ This is a community event that culminated in the ―Sukkah Palooza.‖ I
hope you attended and helped with either the construction or the decoration. The
names of our participants will appear next month.
We hope that this will be the last year we need a large construction crew. Phil Mosner has taken the
lead in fundraising to put up a new structure that will be used throughout the year and will be much
easier to convert to a sukkah. We will be holding a raffle and other fundraising events to make this
happen. The new sukkah is being designed by Karl Hess with the assistance of Lonnie Jacobs. We will
present the plans and drawings as soon as they are available.
Our Sunday brunches will be featured in our plans for the coming year. The art and jazz brunches were
well received and will be repeated. New to our schedule this year will be discussions on Israeli affairs –
history, viewpoints, and insights. We are planning to have guest speakers who will enlighten and
stimulate us.
In doing our planning, we realized that Sunday mornings do not work for families with young children.
To respond to this difficulty, we have decided to have baby sitting at all Sunday morning functions.
Dads can come to men-only functions and give Moms the morning off. A cultural event (jazz, art,
Israeli affairs) can allow both parents to experience the event and at the same time have the children
taken care of. All that we ask is that parents contact us in advance so that we can have enough
babysitters.
Watch your mail for our next events. We look forward to seeing you.
Bart Bookman, Men’s Club President
Special Thanks
Once again our committee has produced a beautiful Book of Remembrance for our holiday use. Special thanks for all the
careful and time-consuming work to chair, Helen Atlas, and her tireless committee: Sheila Bunin, Judy Cohen, Helen
Kuttner, Janet Miller, Rosalyn Portnoy, Maddie Roimisher and Shelly Sirotowitz.
Tanakh Thoughts by Marty Cohen
For many centuries the Bible has been intensely examined by Jewish scholars, teachers, and students who were
always trying to derive as much meaning as they could from the sacred text. The analyses fall into four
categories of interpretation.
The first method looks at the text for its plain meaning. What you see is what you get, which can lead to the
fundamentalist claim that everything written is literally true, no matter how bizarre.
The second approach views the text as allegorical. Each person or each recorded event represents some other
person or event, sometimes cosmic, that is even more important.
The third method sees the text as didactic. That is, it exists mainly to teach us important lessons about life.
The fourth approach is mysticism. This is the belief that the text merely hints at the true nature of the universe
and/or God, and deeper probing is required to uncover hidden truths. In thirteenth-century Spain, Kabbalah
arose from this approach.
There is another outgrowth of the fourth approach, called gematria, which we’ve discussed before in this
column. This method assigns a numeric value to each letter of the Hebrew alphabet, adds up the values of all the
letters in a word, and thus derives the total numeric value for each word (or expression) in the text. Then, by
finding another word or expression that adds up to the same value, equivalences are made, and sometimes
startling conclusions are derived.
I personally consider gematria to be nonsense. However, something recently happened to me, involving
gematria, that was startling. I was lecturing on Jewish history at an Elderhostel seminar (Elderhostel is now
called Road Scholar). To illustrate the methods of analyzing sacred text, I placed a hypothetical statement that
―the chicken crossed the road‖ into sacred literature and was joking as to how each of the above methods of
analysis would treat such a statement. When I got to the mystical approach, I used gematria and, totally making
up summation values, I said that since ―chicken in the road‖ added up to 650 and so did ―Road Scholar,‖ we
derive the ―proof‖ that everyone should order chicken at lunchtime, which was coming up within the hour. The
joke got a hearty laugh and then I went on to more serious topics.
Well, the matter would have been forgotten except for what followed next. When we
got to the lunchroom, the menu offered three choices for the entrée (the Catskills ain’t
what they used to be). I didn’t particularly care for any of them so I asked the waitress
what substitutes were available. She said to me (and I have witnesses), ―You should
have the chicken!‖ Could gematria be correct after all?
10
From the Editor:
OK, let’s talk about Gematria, also known as that Wacky Number Thing That Jews Do To Prove Stuff. The
good news (especially for those who flunk most tests) is that whatever answer you come up with is right. The
bad news (especially for the perfectionists among us) is that whatever answer you come up with is right.
Let me give you one of the classic examples, freely translated from the works of Rabbi Numero ben Algebra,
grandson of Rav Calculus of Trigonometry, familiarly known as ―The Numbers Guy,‖ not to be confused with
the fellow who makes innumerable bets at the racetrack and spends the rest of the month trying to evade the
FBI. (Incidentally, the numerical equivalent of ―FBI‖ is 4.394 squared plus a little extra if you figure it out on
the Shabbos immediately preceding Groundhog Day, but only if the groundhog sees his shadow.)
Anyway, ―The Numbers Guy,‖ using all the fingers and toes in his immediate family, which amount to 147
(don’t ask), came up with the indisputable fact that if your family has a bizarre number of fingers and toes, the
weather in July of the year 9571 will be hotter than hell. Some scholars believe that we don’t need Gematria to
figure that one out. All we have to do is ask those congregants who believe the weather is already hotter than
hell judging by the temperature in the OJC sanctuary. But all this is only the byproduct of his revolutionary
discovery. Are you ready? Wait for it.
The numerical equivalent of all the letters in Tanakh, combined with all the letters Elvis Presley received and
continues to receive, added to all incorrect spellings of ―sesquicentennial,‖ multiplied by the Heisenberg
Uncertainty Principle (so we don’t neglect science altogether) and then divided by dissension, as many Jewish
Boards of Trustees are (not OJC’s!), leads us to the following monumental truth.
JEWS LIKE TO WASTE TIME!!!
What, you may ask, is so startling about this discovery? Haven’t we known it for centuries? Do we not
demonstrate signs of it at every opportunity? Do we not spend inordinate hours watching TV, oversleeping,
chatting on the phone, working for a living? Do we need Gematria to tell us all this?
Aha! You have unearthed the heart of the matter, the essential truth that is the source of all that mental exercise,
the very foundation upon which all this numbering is based:
GEMETRIA IS A FUN WAY OF WASTING TIME!!!
And how do we prove this elemental concept? How do we verify the philosophical conclusions of ―The
Numbers Guy‖? Simple. You’ve been reading this column, right? I wrote it, right? Can you think of a more
meaningless, insignificant, inane, and also silly way for all of us to spend our time? The rabbis of antiquity
(including the not-yet-mentioned Rebbe Longish Division of Beit Mathematica and Rebbe Abacus ben Multiple
in his subtract [get it?] entitled ―Time Wasting for Fun and Profit‖) call to us down through the ages with these
words of consolation:
HE OR SHE WHO WASTETH TIME WITH A MERRY HEART IS FAR BETTER
THAN HE OR SHE WHO WASTETH IT WITH A SOUR PUSS.
And let that be a lesson to you.
Journey Group
A unique learning experience at the OJC
In the Journey Group, we study texts
about meaningful living, about cultivating
gratitude. We ask “big questions,” knowing
that each of us will find our own answers
... or perhaps just find more questions.
13
A journey group recognizes
that all of us are on our own
Jewish journey and that learning
together can assist us on the way.
Perhaps you see this announcement each year and pass it by after a moment of consideration. You think
that the idea of growing Jewishly is intriguing but probably not for you. Perhaps, this year, you are
wrong. Perhaps this is your year to join the Journey Group and take the next step of your spiritual
inquiry. We study from God in All Moments: Mystical and Practical Spiritual Wisdom from Hasidic
Masters to ask the questions that are a part of the Jewish journey. This easily accessible book offers
short, pithy quotations ready for discussion. Our discussions, while pithy, run deep.
Commit yourself now to this journey and we will all be the richer and wiser for your participation.
The OJC Religious School Board News
The OJC Religious School would like to welcome our new School Board President, Staci Gelb. Staci’s
connection to OJC began at birth when she was named here. She graduated from our Religious School and has
been a congregant with her parents and with her own family for her entire life. Staci's parents, Zelda and Burt
Heller, have been OJC members for over 40 years. Her father was president of the shul in the 1980s. Her
husband, Jared Gelb, has served as our Youth Director. Staci is the mother of Louis (age 11), Samantha (age 8)
(both in our school) and Brandon (age 3). Staci looks forward to meeting and working with our Religious
School families.
The School Board would like to thank Sharon Aach and Hara Hartman, our past School Board Presidents, for
all their dedication, wisdom, and hard work guiding our school for these past four years. We are fortunate that
Hara and Sharon will still serve on our School Board along with returning members Pam Berg, Marty Cohen,
Ina Filip, Rosina Hirsh, and Renee Price. We would also like to thank Dawn Kitz, Miriam Schatz-Mizrahi, Kim
Thirty Days
Thirty days has September, April, June and November. When it comes to observing the mourning
period of shloshim, thirty days can be truncated due to certain holidays. Along with many fellow
congregants, I heard Rabbi Scheff explain the exceptions to the rule as I ended my shortened period of
shiva for my father’s passing.
Before I continue, I’d like to thank all of you for your support during the 55-day period when my father
was hospitalized, during the seventeen days of shloshim and the days after, and for donations made.
The loving kindness continues to this day, as people still ask how my mom is doing.
My dad was buried on the afternoon leading up to Shavuot, which meant that my period of shiva was
less than six hours and only observed at my parents’ home. I knew that very few people would be able
to visit and did not really need the comfort of others at that time. However, I began to think about how
my OJC friends would be able to unofficially acknowledge my dad’s death. Rabbi Scheff and I came
up with the idea of having people come to one of the next few Monday evening minyanim where I
serve as gabbai. The daily chapel was overflowing that first Monday evening. It was not part of the
shiva period, but felt like it.
OJC continues to be a learning community and I am grateful for being part of its extended family, as
well as being a ―regular‖ member. Dealing with a life cycle event is not new to most of us and we all
cope with its physical and mental demands differently. I felt fortunate that I was prepared religiously
prior to my dad’s death and as I am continuing to say kaddish. Unfortunately, I was not able to say
kaddish every day but that did not bother me. My first missed opportunity was on the evening that
ended Shavuot. We did not have enough Jews at my parents’ home and the nearby shul had an earlier
scheduled minyan.
Over my OJC years, I have attended minyanim when someone would mark the end of shloshim or the
anniversary of a death by saying a few words and/or making a toast (whiskey or bagel). Because I
really had no shiva opportunity to share something about my father, I needed to get it out of my system
and planned an evening to do so. I knew it would be emotionally difficult to speak to about 60 people
but I also knew that it would be another learning opportunity for our community. I was especially
happy that some of my friends brought their young children to be part of the supportive love that our
community prides itself on.
I only hope that when other members of our congregation lose loved ones, there will be a similar
overflowing amount of support. Just saying a few words, giving a hug or helping to make a minyan,
especially on an anniversary date, is all that it takes.
Side note: I would have loved to share this with you earlier, but because of the Shaliach’s summer
break, it had to be delayed. Wishing you a most happy and healthy New Year.
20
October B’nai Mitzvah
Jonathan Schatz-Mizrahi
On October 9 th our son, Jonathan will be called to the Torah
as a bar mitzvah. This summer we experienced the joy of his
reading Torah at the Kotel, celebrating his bar mitzvah with
his Israeli grandmother and aunts. Afterwards we were
fortunate to be able to fulfill Jonathan’s dream of going to
Europe where we had a glorious family trip to Italy.
Sharing his passion for soccer Jonathan brought new soccer
equipment to the children that live at Kfar Ahava, in the north
of Israel for his mitzvah project. The Village of Love provides
a healthy home and upbringing to underprivileged children. To
earn money to pay for the equipment Jonathan worked this
summer helping with a project to expand our driveway.
We are very proud of the young man Jonathan has become –
an honors student at Felix Festa Middle School, an asset to his
travel soccer team, a voracious reader and most importantly a
kind person, sensitive and attuned to the world around him.
