The Sheridan Press/Casey Temple
Lady General sophomore Melissa St. John gets ready to serve
against Black Hills State last week. Sheridan College faces the
University of Great Falls tonight at 7 at the Bruce Hoffman
Golden Dome.
Sierra Club sponsors hike
in Little Bighorn Canyon
From Staff Reports
The Wyoming Chapter of the
Sierra Club, based in Sheridan, is
sponsoring a hike Sept. 20 into
Little Bighorn Canyon.
“This will be a day hike into one
of the most remote and wild
canyons left in the Big Horn
Mountains,” said Sierra Club representative
Kirk Koepsel of Sheridan.
The Little Bighorn Canyon is on
the northern Bighorn National
Forest, just south of the Wyoming-
Broncs
(Continued from Page B1)
“The biggest thing was (Miles
City) having played a game,”
Simpson said of the Broncs’ opening
loss. “We looked like it was our
first game and they looked like it
was their second. We made mistakes
that they made in the first
game. I would anticipate playing
harder and better Friday.”
Though Cody was down 49-0
with nearly the entire second half to
play, Simpson said the score is
deceiving.
“They’re not as bad as the score
indicates,” he said.
Cody put eight men on the line
of scrimmage against Gillette,
which resulted in big plays when
the Camels got through the line of
scrimmage, Simpson said.
On offense, Cody runs out of the
I-formation. Simpson said Cody has
had success with quarterback
Andrew Beyeler (6-1, 175, jr.) rushing
the ball and on fullback screens.
Against the Cowboys, the
Broncs were able to put up solid
halves on both offense and defense,
Dubois
(Continued from Page B1)
The proposed comprehensive plan
to improve UW athletics includes
spending an additional $2.6 million
annually to restore UW’s competitive
capabilities, such as more money for
recruiting, and spending an additional
$25 million to improve athletic facilities,
such as a new indoor practice
facilty.
The Strategic Plan for
Intercollegiate Athletics is the most
ambitious move in UW athletics since
the completion of the $9.5 million
Rochelle Athletics Center.
The sports to benefit most from
the plan are football, men’s and women’s
basketball, and volleyball.
Questioned about the need for all
the spending, Dubois said a balance
between affordability and quality
needs to be reached.
‘‘To be cheap is not necessarily to
be good,’’ Dubois told a UW student
government meeting Tuesday. ‘‘We
want to keep education and our athletic
program affordable. We also want
everything that we do here to be outstanding,
and in certain areas of what
Montana state line.
Koepsel will guide the trip,
which is free of charge.
Among the items that participants
should carry in their day pack
are food, water, sunscreen, bug
repellent, rain gear and extra clothing.
“Sturdy shoes and a wide
brimmed hat are also recommended,”
Koepsel said.
Persons wishing to participate
are asked to preregister by calling
672-0425.
but not during the same time.
Simpson applauded the defensive
effort in the first half when
Sheridan held Miles City to three
field goals, and said the Bronc
offense had some success moving
the ball in the second.
“We finally got (the option)
going in the second half and we’ll
hopefully build on that,” he said.
The only Bronc score came on
an 11-yard pass from Zach Wheeler
to tailback Luke Hininger with 25
seconds to play. Junior fullback Jon
Rojo had 175 total yards of offense.
But Simpson is also looking for
the Broncs to play more inspired
than they did for most of their first
game.
“I talked about taking the fight
to them and we did,” he said. “But
they punched back and we needed
to respond a little better.”
The Sheridan sophomore team
— a 13-0 winner over Billings
Skyview last Thursday — will host
the Cody sophomore team at 3:30
p.m. Friday at Homer Scott Field.
we do, that costs money.’’
Fifty percent of the funds will
come from ‘‘soft sources’’ — money
from tickets, National Collegiate
Athletic Association earnings, promotions,
and sponsors. The remaining 50
percent will come from Wyoming
mineral royalties, state funds, and student
sources, such as tuition and athletics
fees.
Although UW has a low tuition
rate compared to other conference
schools, athletic fees have jumped
significantly in the past two years,
much to the irritation of students.
Dubois said student fees make up
only 6 percent of the UW athletic
budget, while in other Division I-A
schools they typically make up 8 to
10 percent.
‘‘The student athletic fees for
Wyoming students, by comparison to
other Mountain West Conference
schools, are fairly high,’’ Dubois told
the student senators. ‘‘Unfortunately,
that’s just a function of our size. If we
were two or three times larger as an
institution, we could probably keep
those fees a little lower and generate
more money.’’
Broncos have few fond
memories of playing Bengals
DENVER (AP) — Most teams
have fond memories of playing the
Cincinnati Bengals, one of the
league’s worst teams.
Not the Denver Broncos.
The last Bengals’ image they have
is Corey Dillon celebrating and weeping
after he set the NFL record with
278 yards rushing in a game three
years ago.
‘‘I’ll probably never forget it, no
matter what happens the rest of my
life,’’ Broncos defensive end Trevor
Pryce said. ‘‘I have a lot of pictures in
my mind from wins, losses, all types
of situations. But that one is pretty
special. I’m sure I’ll think of it
Sunday.’’
Dillon broke a record that had
stood since 1977, when Chicago’s
Walter Payton rushed for 275 yards
against the Minnesota Vikings.
About the only way the Broncos
could forget would be through selective
memory or some kind of injury.
‘‘Luckily, when you have all those
concussions, you forget all of those
things,’’ Broncos receiver Ed
McCaffrey said.
The Broncos are expecting to see
plenty of running plays involving
Dillon when the teams open the season
Sunday in Cincinnati.
SHARPE ON RUSH: ABC tried
Dennis Miller as an analyst on
‘‘Monday Night Football.’’ That
didn’t exactly turn out well, but this
year ESPN will use conservative
radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh
as part of its ‘‘NFL Sunday
Countdown’’ show.
Broncos tight end Shannon Sharpe
isn’t convinced it will work. ‘‘I don’t
know if Rush Limbaugh knows the
difference between a screen porch
and a screen play, but we’ll see,’’
Sharpe said.
WALLS: Cornerback Lenny
Walls who didn’t get drafted after
leaving Boston College in 2002 will
be making his first career start against
the Bengals on Sunday.
Walls knows that means he probably
will get tested quite a bit early in
the season, but he’s looking forward
to it.
Wyoming coach Joe Glenn noted
the conference has won nearly
half (23-51) its games against BCS
opponents during its five-year history.
‘‘Look at what our league has
done to date,’’ Glenn said. ‘‘I think
we’re being
dissed somewhat,
and I
think that
whole BCS
thing is out of
line.
‘‘It’s a
money and
power deal,
Joe
Glenn
but I really
don’t think
it’s fair to
legislate any
team out of a
playoff.
‘‘I kind of think that’s what is
happening,’’ he said. ‘‘I think our
league represents itself quite well
and time will play it out.’’ MWC
