CMHA-WECB in the Community – COURAGEThe past year showed, once again, the tremendous support and commitment the people of Windsor-Essex have for community mental health services. The year was filled with great events that celebrated the community while helping support our neighbors and friends who struggled with issues relating to mental health. Our fundraising efforts included a mix of new and “old” CMHA events along with three direct mail campaigns, a new internal campaign, foundation grants, third party events and corporate donations. We were thrilled at the response to our first ever Spring Into Action Walk/ Run which raised over $5,000 for CMHA-WECB and offered families an opportunity to enjoy some physical exercise and time together at the Vollmer Recreation Complex in LaSalle. Many volunteers also joined us at the Walk/Run to create a great morning for the CMHA- WECB “family”. The Black and White event and Go Green Golf Tournament were also well-attended and supported by individuals and businesses in the community. We also offered more “Cooking with Chef Mimmo” classes right in the CMHA kitchen at the 1400 Windsor Ave office. These classes were well attended and offered a new, different way for people to support CMHA while exploring the joys of cooking. Chef Mimmo and Koolini Italian Eater entrepreneur Leo Deluca took their support of CMHA-WECB even further when they decided to offer a portion of the sales of Mimmo’s first cookbook to the agency. We worked with Mimmo and Leo throughout the year to promote the cookbook and reach the community with the message of exploring hobbies, such as cooking, and the importance of enjoying meals together with family and friends and the benefit this can have on one’s mental health. The Links Fore Wink third party tournament organized by CMHA volunteer Elaine Douglas and her family in memory of her daughter Wendy Douglas-Menard was another great success raising $10,000 for 4 1. CMHA’s bereavement program. The Douglas family did another amazing job on their event and have offered tremendous support to our organization. We were also fortunate to be the recipients of a new Ontario Trillium Foundation grant which will help us create new outreach tools and educational materials to be utilized in the bereavement programs. These programs continue to be non-funded and rely on community donations for ongoing support. We were thrilled to receive a grant from the Ontario Law Foundation to offer a free workshop last October on “Mental Health and the Justice System” which was presented to a sold out crowd. In addition, the grant also allowed us to publish a new resource booklet for the community on the topic of the justice system and mental health services. Fighting stigma continues to be one of the major objectives of our community relations activities and last year we brought singer/songwriter Judy Collins to the Caboto Club to discuss her own battle with addiction and the loss of her only son to suicide. Collins offered an entertaining talk on the ups and downs of fame and the constant struggle of living with addiction. Last year we also produced the second group of Mental Health for Life television shows in conjunction with Cogeco Cable 11. Cogeco has been extremely supportive of our agency and allowed us to shoot four new shows about mental health. This is an original show produced only by CMHA-WECB and airing on the local Cable 11 channel. We thank all of our generous donors and volunteers for their support over the past year and we look forward to working with them in the year to come. 1.
