Abstract for presentation: Public Health Association Conference 2008 Drinking Water
Assistance in Northland Everyone should have access to good quality drinking water
no matter where they live. Many small communities in Northland do not have access
to drinking-water that is shown to be safe. In 2006 the Ministry of Health drinking water
technical assistance programme (TAP) commenced for Northland. The programme
was introduced in three phases which involved programme promotion, formation of
TAP groups, development of public health risk management plans and encouraging
participation in the programme. Northlands participation in TAP is huge. Water
suppliers are being rewarded for their energy. Around Northland we are seeing new
tanks, pipes, water treatment plants being installed, we are seeing increased
knowledge and skills in drinking water systems management and of course smiles on
many faces because the whanau can now drink clean and safe water. During 2007 a
total of $903,672.00 of capital assistance was approved for small water supplies in
Northland (eight Marae, four communities, one papakainga) and many more to
come! This is the story of the ongoing success of the Ministry of Health drinking water
assistance TAP programme in Northland. Presenters: Tahi Morton, Ariana Martin, Joe
George (Waikare Marae) and Alex Bennett (Te Huruhi Marae). 35 mins T. Morton
