To find out how much sugar is in many of the foods we eat.<br />

Works <strong>for</strong> most any size group.<br />

15 minutes, or as desired.<br />

Note cards with sugar content in<strong>for</strong>mation, “Where can you<br />

find the sugar” fill-in <strong>for</strong>m <strong>and</strong> answer sheet (See attached).<br />

1. Give each student a “Where can you find the sugar” fill-in <strong>for</strong>m, <strong>and</strong> a food<br />

item card with its sugar content (See attached).<br />

2. Students move about the room, first introducing themselves to each other <strong>and</strong><br />

then asking that person what they are “serving” <strong>and</strong> how much sugar is in it.<br />

The object of the game is to fill in all of the blanks on their “Where can you find<br />

the sugar” fill-in <strong>for</strong>m.<br />

3. When students complete the <strong>for</strong>m go over the answers, have students identify<br />

in<strong>for</strong>mation they find surprising,<br />

4. Present the following “Q&A:”<br />

What is considered to be a moderate amount of added sugar in the diet<br />

Answer: 6 teaspoons <strong>for</strong> a 1600 calorie diet<br />

<strong>12</strong> teaspoons <strong>for</strong> a 2200 calorie diet<br />

18 teaspoons <strong>for</strong> a 2800 calorie diet<br />

Ask: Are you surprised by the amount of sugar found in some of the examples<br />

in the Scavenger Hunt Which ones<br />

5. Tell the students that if you divide the grams of sugar in a food item by four,<br />

you will get the amount of teaspoons of sugar the food has in it.<br />
