Perhaps Today | May-June 2004 Letters We Love 24 Letters The Walking Bible We Love Dear Dr. Van Impe, I had the joy and honor of traveling with you across our nation for four years, conducting over 450 banquets. Not once did I take for granted the opportunity I had of working so closely with “The Walking Bible.” What a thrill it was to spend literally thousands of hours laughing, crying, praying, and rejoicing in the Lord with you. While some other evangelists traveled in their own custom jets, you chose to save the Lord’s money by riding with me in our work van. In fact, I still remember the times when Mrs. Van Impe was with us, which meant the only place left for you to sit in the two-seat van was in the middle of the cargo boxes. Many of these trips required traveling 250- 300 miles a day. What really impressed my friends when I told them about you folks was that besides not having a real seat, you spent those many uncomfortable hours studying and memorizing Scripture. Still more people were shocked to hear that you got out and pumped gasoline when we stopped to fill up at service stations. I want you to know that I love and appreciate you. In a day of extravagance and waste, I do not know of anybody who is a better steward of God’s money than you. Every step of the way you are conscientious and aware of how it’s being used. Jack Van Impe Ministries was not born overnight, but started with two young servants eager to serve the Lord with all their might. I cannot begin to imagine the sacrifices you made in the early years, oftentimes not getting paid for weeks of meetings, all the while living out of a suitcase and even on occasion sleeping overnight in you car. Thank God that after all these years you are still sensitive and concerned with the money God’s people sacrificially give in support of your ministry. I’m so thankful that I can have a part in this wonderful ministry that ministers to ten of thousands of Christian and reaches the lost for Christ. You can count on my continued support. Perhaps Today | May-June 2004 Letters We Love 25 56 Years of Doing God’s Work Dear Dr. Van Impe, I want to congratulate you on this 56th birthday anniversary in the work of the Lord. What a record! For fourteen years I was privileged to be a part of the ministry where I witnessed first-hand your many distinguishing attributes. You epitomized Paul’s admonition: Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of truth. (II Timothy 2:15) It is evident that you have diligently studied and memorized God’s Word, and I know that you have avidly read thousands of books, journals, magazines and newspaper articles in an effort to be informed on current affairs and doctrinal issues. Furthermore, you have utilized your creative abilities to incorporate this knowledge into videos, books, TV programs, and other writings. Your disciplined efforts have been exemplary; yet, you have done it all for the glory of God. I remember one chapel service where you quoted John 3:30: He must increase, but I must decrease, this was your philosophy. I was the receptionist when the TV satellite “earth station” was installed (December 1989). It was a very cold day with a wind chill factor of 30 degrees below zero. When the two gentlemen came to the front entrance informing me they were there to do the job of installing the satellite dish, I asked them if they felt the weather was too cold, but they gave a shrug of indifference implying that wouldn’t be a problem (one of the fellows was from Florida). They weren’t able to finish the job (due to the cold temperature) so we rented another dish, and for the first time in history that dish got ice on it. Nevertheless, the installation of the satellite was a significant achievement for it enables you to reach the world for Christ. There were many interesting remarks by callers who expressed the impact you made on their lives. One man who heard your program for the first time stated, “He just blows my mind.” A Catholic lady called to say, “Dr. Van Impe is like the trunk of a tree, and I am one of the branches. I have learned from him, and one of my sons has started watching since I have been listening, and he is another branch.” She went on to say that her son wasn’t interested in religious-type programs but one day she noticed that he was listening, and when your program was on, he wouldn’t miss it. This same woman started a study class at her church, and she reported, “they are branches from the trunk; they are getting their growth from the trunk.” (Meaning you). The message from your videos has also been used by God to turn people’s lives around. One man came in to get a video and told me, “I saw the video ‘America in Prophecy’ and I became a Christian after seeing it.” One fact stands out as a generally recognized feeling: people respect and value your opinion. One caller, a teacher, had a Ph.D. in history — another taught a class in Geopolitics for the National War College in Washington D.C. Both callers wanted to impart correct facts to their students and wanted to be sure that it was in accord with what you believe. I thank God that you are being used as one of His instruments to bring release to countless people around the world who are being held hostage by sin. God has used your message to tell them that a loving Father gave His Son as their ransom. Lastly, I appreciate the concern you and your dear wife have shown to me, personally, over the years.
