PERHAPS NO OTHER INDIVIDUAL<br />
is more responsible for the<br />
existence of the four-year medical<br />
education program at the University<br />
of <strong>North</strong> <strong>Dakota</strong> than the president<br />
who served at one of the most<br />
important junctures in its history.<br />
In the early 1970s, when<br />
President Thomas Clifford was<br />
new to his post, he faced the<br />
challenge of closing the medical<br />
school, which offered a two-year,<br />
basic science education, or<br />
building it into a four-year Doctor<br />
of <strong>Medicine</strong> (MD) degree-granting<br />
school. From its inception in<br />
1905, the school had transferred<br />
its students to other schools to<br />
complete the final two years of<br />
medical education to earn the MD<br />
degree. Most never returned to<br />
practice in <strong>North</strong> <strong>Dakota</strong>.<br />
President Clifford decided that<br />
young people in his home state<br />
should continue to have the<br />
