TRINITY LABAN CONSERVATOIRE
OF MUSIC & DANCE
Following the success of Trinity Laban’s two
previous festivals devoted to the string quartet,
the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich, will
once again resonate with the sounds of ‘strings
and things’ as the Royal Greenwich String Quartet
Festival returns for this major celebration of the
genre and of Trinity Laban's own chamber
music programme.
Concerts cover the evolution of the string
quartet from Haydn, performed by the Quatuor
Mosaïques, world famous period performance
specialists, through the genius of Mozart, with a
special emphasis on the works of Beethoven, from
some of his earliest to his latest masterpieces.
Then on to Schumann, Janáček, Schnittke and
beyond, including installations and a groundbreaking
meeting of music and science in the
Cutty Sark where you can be the first to hear the
world première of Deirdre Gribbin’s new work
Hearing Your Genes Evolve, performed by The
Smith Quartet. A weekend buzzing with students
from all UK conservatoires attending a feast of
concerts, masterclasses, competitions and talks,
mixing music-lovers and some of the greatest
professionals with a lot of kids having loads of
musical fun…
Many events are free, all ticket prices very
reasonable, special discount rates and one and
three-day passes available. All this, and a royal
palace, just for your pleasure!

Over the whole weekend you will be able to
experience an original audio-visual installation by
Trinity Laban Head of Composition, Dr Dominic
Murcott, based on the string quartet.
Throughout the festival, Sound Heart (soundheart.
co.uk) will be at Trinity Laban selling a wide
selection of music and CDs. Jonathan Peter
Larkman, Trinity Laban's own expert luthier, will
also be present with a selection of instruments
and accessories on display.

DIRECTIONS
By Docklands Light Railway (DLR)
& London Underground (Tube)
The easiest way to reach Trinity Laban at the
Old Royal Naval College (ORNC) is by Docklands
Light Railway, alighting at Cutty Sark station
(a five minute walk from the ORNC).
By Bus
Bus routes 129, 177, 180, 188, 199, 286 and
386 all bring you to the heart of Greenwich.
By Train
Mainline trains to Greenwich leave from London
Bridge, Charing Cross, Waterloo East, Cannon
Street and Dartford. Turn left when you leave the
station to head for the town centre. The ORNC
is approximately a ten-minute walk away.
By River
Greenwich Pier is sited at the western corner
of the ORNC site and it is just four miles
downstream from Tower Bridge. Regular
riverboat services are available to Greenwich
from Westminster, Embankment, London
Bridge, Bankside and Tower Piers. Thames
Clippers run an express service (with discounted
tickets for travelcard holders), which runs every
20 minutes, and City Cruises run a service with
commentary, see thamesclippers.com and
citycruises.com
By Car
Greenwich can be accessed via the M25, A2,
A20 and the South Circular (A250). Parking is
not permitted within the grounds of the ORNC
and parking is very limited in Greenwich,
particularly at weekends. Car parks are sited in
Park Row (SE10 9NL) and Cutty Sark Gardens.

TALK: GENETIC SCIENCE AND MUSIC
/ GENETICS ETHICS
Composer, Dr Deirdre Gribbin, a Leverhulme
Artist in Residence at Cambridge University has
been working with Dr Sarah Teichmann, Group
Leader in the MRC Laboratory of Molecular
Biology at Cambridge University, to compose a
new piece called Hearing Your Genes Evolve.
In this talk, they explain the sequences,
structures and interactions that occur in genetics
and how they can be conveyed through sound.
