WHAT IS HOOT
Jazz is where it’s at. It’s music that comes from the soul.
It’s cool, it’s hot, sometimes familiar but always changing.
It’s on the edge, it’s in the groove and, this June long
weekend, it’s in the Hills!
Performers come to Hoot! to celebrate jazz – from across
the world, across Australia and just across the street. It’s
a blast of heat in the middle of winter as an astonishing
range of players, singers, composers and performers
converge on the Hills and deliver performances that
cover the spectrum of jazz.
Experimental, fusion, funk, soul, blues, trad, bebop,
croon, swing and hip-hop can all be found, in intimate
and inimitable venues: where else would you find a
gig at a funeral parlour, on a train, in a church and on a
bowling green Only at Hoot!
There’s jazz in pubs and cafes, in marquees and the
town hall. There’s so much jazz that it’s spreading to
neighbouring towns – Littlehampton, Hahndorf, Nairne
and Macclesfield are all part of the fun.
Last year’s inaugural Hoot! was praised by audiences
and performers alike for its eclectic venues, appealing
program and sheer infectious spirit. And now it’s back,
with the most outstanding lineup of jazz musicians you’ll
see in South Australia this year.
Don’t miss it!
Festival Director
Welcome back to Hoot! Adelaide Hills
Jazz Festival – Mount Barker. I’d like
to acknowledge that this festival takes
place on Peramangk land.
It doesn’t seem like a year since I
wrote last year’s welcome to the
very first Hoot!, but here we are in
2013 with a new program, some new
venues and a whole lot more of the
very special mix that Hoot! introduced
to the Adelaide Hills in 2012.
Exotic, experimental, sentimental
and inspirational, Hoot! promises to
once again wow audiences with a
program of international, interstate
and local performers.
There will be family fun, free shows,
and a range of musical styles that is
sure to excite and entertain.
Whether you’re looking to discover
something new, rekindle an old
musical flame, or simply dance the
night away, Hoot! is bound to please.
On behalf of the District Council of
Mount Barker, please accept my
invitation to join in with us as we
celebrate the newest Hills tradition,
and have a Hoot!
South Australia is known for its
festival culture, and it’s exciting to see
a vibrant new event make its mark.
The Hoot! Adelaide Hills Jazz Festival
– Mount Barker is important, not only
because it’s the biggest gathering of
jazz musicians in the state, but also
for its role in expanding our cultural
footprint beyond the square mile
of Adelaide. The Adelaide Hills is
growing in stature as a destination
and events like Hoot! can only help
that progression, attracting visitors
and performers from beyond our
borders. In its second year, Hoot! has
once again secured three incredible
international acts: the masterful
James Carter Trio from Detroit, the
wild and expressive Snarky Puppy
from Texas, and the unique and
inventive young Austrian pianist David
Helbock, who will play his Australian
premiere right here in Mount Barker.
This festival is not just about international
artists. The number of brilliant and
talented local artists – not only from
the Adelaide Hills but also from all over
South Australia – is amazing. A festival
such as this not only shows what a rich
pool of home-grown talent we have, but
also gives local artists the opportunity
to play alongside their international and
interstate counterparts.
The Government of South Australia
and the South Australian Tourism
Commission is proud to support this
eclectic, fun-loving and inclusive festival,
and I look forward to sampling that
famous Hills hospitality when I visit
Hoot! this June long weekend. I hope
to see you there.
The final notes of the last amazing
performance of Hoot! 2012 were still
in my ears when I started getting
really excited about the 2013 Festival.
When we launched the inaugural
Hoot! last year, we knew it was
going to be special. Knew it was
going to be something that the Hills
had never seen before. That we
would witness some of the world’s
best musicians performing in our
own neighbourhood.
What we didn’t expect was the way
the community embraced Hoot! From
the first steps of the Opening Parade to
the cleanup at the end, we were blown
away by the responses from everyone
we came in contact with. Audiences
were delighted, international artists
told us they’d never had hospitality at a
festival like they got from the Adelaide
Hills, Hills-dwellers came out in droves
and visitors flocked to the region.
So we’re back, and our team have once
again pulled out all the stops. I would
like to thank all our sponsors, supporters
and the Hoot crew, especially Festival
Coordinator, Simon Duncan.
This year we’ve got four international
acts, six interstate acts, and the cream
of the South Australian jazz scene
on their way to the Hills. We’ve got
favourites from last year, like jazz on
trains, on the bowling green, in the
funeral parlour, in pubs and cafes, in the
streets and even in church.
Look through this fab new program, plan
your weekend, and get ready to Hoot!
OPENING NIGHT
PARADE &
STREET PARTY
SA POLICE
BAND
CONCERT
Free
events
It’s fun for the whole family when Hoot! comes to the Hills.
The Opening Night Parade and Street Party is a noisy and
colourful celebration of music to kick off a fabulous weekend
of jazz with style.
Mount Barker’s main street will be closed to traffic and
themed to evoke the spirit of a New Orleans Mardi Gras.
Led by The Atlantic Street Band and followed by The Various
Nefarious and the SA Police’s Dixieland Band, a procession
of performers and musicians will make their way through
Mount Barker, singing, dancing and turning the street into a
kaleidoscope of light and sound.
The Street Parade is inspired by the New Orleans tradition
of the ‘Second Line’, where the whole neighbourhood would
follow a funeral procession in a rowdy celebration of life,
except that our Parade isn’t a sad one – it’s all about fun!
There’ll be food, drink, music and dancing until late, so come
along, join in and make a night of it!
The South Australian Police Band is known for their lively
street processions, and use music to deliver community
messages. As an institution steeped in proud tradition, the
SA Police Band has become an identifiable part of our state’s
history and image. The band is broken up into a number of
small ensembles, and this year’s Hoot-goers will be treated
to shows by the Dixieland Band and Kind of Blue.
Dixieland Band
The Dixieland Band has been delighting audiences for over
30 years. The group is made up of 7 members – vocal,
trumpet, clarinet, trombone, banjo, bass and drums. Whilst
keeping close to the Dixieland style, it ventures outside the
usual boundaries. Embracing versatility, an audience may
hear anything from Louis Armstrong to Elvis Presley, all with
a special SAPOL band touch.
Kind of Blue
Also the name of a Miles Davis album, the recently formed
Kind of Blue is a laid back six-piece offering a diverse
repertoire of jazz, lounge, folk and pop with a line-up of piano,
bass, drums, saxophone, flute and vocals.
David Helbock is only 29, but already
he has made an indelible mark on
the European jazz scene, winning
Austria’s highest artistic prize, the
Outstanding Artist Award, in 2011. It’s
a prize that sits well with previous
awards, including two jury prizes and
an audience prize at the Montreux
Jazz Piano Solo competition.
He has released 11 albums since
1998 and performed throughout
sessions in the USA, Australia,
Mexico, Russia, Kazakhstan,
Kyrgyzstan, Morocco, Ethiopia, Kenya,
Senegal, Indonesia, Malaysia, India,
Argentina and Chile.
In addition to his intensive studies
in jazz and classical piano, he has also
studied percussion, elements of which
feature in his unorthodox and highly
individual approach to the piano.
From the beginning of his career,
Helbock has been a prolific composer.
His works include a concerto for jazz
trio and orchestra, and a daunting
project for which he wrote a new
piece every day for a year. The
resulting works were published in
2010 with over 600 pages of music.
He has played and recorded with
jazz legends like Peter Madsen and
Chick Corea, as well as leading his
own bands. Most recently he released
Purple, an album of solo piano
interpretations of songs by Prince.
The trio Helbock is bringing to
Mount Barker is as unorthodox
as his playing style, comprising
Raphael Preuschl on bass ukulele
Preuschl and Pirker are respected
Detroit, USA
“He is the complete musician, a technician with no apparent limits and a
8
An artist long intrigued by contrasts
and hybrids, Carter resists comfortable
categorisation. Born and raised in Detroit,
Carter grew up surrounded by music, soaking
up everything from funk and fusion to rock,
soul, and various strains of acoustic jazz.
Equally expressive on alto, tenor, baritone
and, more recently, soprano saxophone,
Carter always finds a way into whatever
musical situation he finds himself. “You have
to be totally comfortable wherever,” Carter
says. “I feel that music equals life, that’s
the way my teacher always taught me. You
just can’t go through life and experience it
fully with a set of blinders on. I think there’s
tremendous beauty in cross-pollinations of
music and influences.”
In 2000, he released two albums
simultaneously that seemed to proclaim
everything fair game: Chasin’ the Gypsy, a
voluptuous, lyrical session partly inspired by
the timeless collaboration between Django
Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli, and
the groove-laden Layin’ in the Cut, which
combines harmolodic freedom with a deep
reservoir of funk.
Further cross-pollination is evident in his
2003 album Gardenias for Lady Day, a
tribute to Billie Holiday, and his 2005 outing
Gold Sounds, which explored the music of
indie rockers Pavement.
He reinvented the organ combo with
2005’s Out of Nowhere, and in 2011 with
At the Crossroads. Featuring the lithe and
muscular keyboard work of Detroit’s rising
B3 star Gerard Gibbs and the propulsive
drum support of veteran Motor City trap
master Leonard King Jr, At the Crossroads
SARAH McKENZIE
SUPPORTED BY EMMA HAMILTON
Sydney, Australia
“Sarah McKenzie is a musical marvel. She sings with the
kind of phrasing that only a true jazz player can come
up with, while her groove on the piano is that stuff that
makes people want to play jazz” – James Morrison
“Sarah McKenzie, the remarkable jazz pianist-vocalistcomposer-arranger,
is a gem” – The Age
The past year has been a triumphant one for jazz vocalist,
piano player and composer Sarah McKenzie. Not only did
she receive a full scholarship to attend the prestigious
Berklee College of Music in Boston, her record Close Your
Eyes picked up an ARIA Award for 2012’s Best Jazz Album.
These are nothing short of remarkable successes for the
24-year-old, who has been labeled a once-in-a-generation
artist. Raised in Melbourne, Sarah was educated in Perth
and is a graduate of the Western Australian Academy of
Performing Arts. She has been mentored by jazz legend
James Morrison, and has recorded two studio albums that
serve as a collection of jazz, blues and pop.
With a lifetime of dedication to music behind her, Sarah is
not afraid to work hard to bring class to music and keep
it there. She is no stranger to the stage; her portfolio
includes performances at the Melbourne International
Jazz Festival and as a vocalist alongside Michael Bublé
on his Call me Irresponsible tour.
“Emma has one of those voices I love”
– Greg Wells (Producer, Adele)
Emma Hamilton has a big year planned, with Hoot! on her
long list of Australian festival line ups, as well as a headlining
tour to Europe in the works to perform her mix of glam pop,
jazz, electro-synth, orchestral, folk and world sounds.
Growing up surrounded by music and French culture,
Emma’s upbringing shines through her 2011 debut album
La Musique. Her live performances are a showcase of her
sassy songwriting, with her poignant and at times comical
lyrics that seamlessly cross over from English to French.
With her vision and passion for eclectic and beautiful tones,
Emma certainly made an impression at last year’s Hoot! This
time around, she will be opening for Sarah McKenzie.
to a funked-up Crowded House cover (It’s Only Natural),
original pop (Spin) and even some soul (Drown in my
Improvised Music Association
“Pianist Gerard Masters, bassist Cameron Undy and
drummer Evan Mannell are capable of … bulldozing
potency. Mannell loves the shock value of unexpected
wallops and Masters and Undy love grooves as ends in
themselves, independently of the brilliant solos Masters
layers on top.” John Shand, The Sydney Morning Herald
Performing together since 2000, this jazz trio, led by pianist
and lead singer Gerard Masters, is extremely versatile in
their style of music. A strong blues theme appears
throughout their more recent album titled Pendulum
which has been likened to that of Paul Bley and Bill Evans.
It includes a range of styles, from high energy bop to
intricate ballad and free improvisation.
The trio have performed at major jazz festivals across
Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Europe. Their
unpredictable style keeps the audience entertained as
