Employees training
Whenever North Devon Council recruits employees it will ensure that they are well informed,
trained, supervised and supported so that they are less likely to become involved in actions that
may cause harm to children, young people and vulnerable adults or be misunderstood. Training
will happen by the following process:
Induction
All new employees will be made familiar with the Safeguarding Policy and Procedures and will
be made aware of the designated Safeguarding Reporting Officers.
Ongoing Training Needs
This policy will be placed on the Intranet and all employees will be expected to read it
thoroughly and sign the declaration at the back of this document (see Appendix 3).
Line managers may identify additional training needs for their employees through the Council’s
Appraisal System. The level to which training is needed will be decided between the employee,
line manager and Human Resources.
Member Training
All Members, both new and currently serving terms, will be offered appropriate training on
safeguarding children, young people and vulnerable adults.
Designated Safeguarding Reporting Officer
Designated Safeguarding Reporting Officers will receive training from Devon County Council to
equip them to deal with the recording and reporting processes.
Procedure in Relation to Specific Services/Circumstances
Work Experience
North Devon Council offers work experience placements across the Council to many young people
each year. Although primarily designed to help young people become familiar with the workplace, it
is also beneficial to North Devon Council as it provides a direct link to an important part of the District
we serve. Employees should ensure that they are aware of the Safe Working Practice Guidelines
such as not travel alone with a work experience student unless the school has specifically approved
this.
