COLLEGE MACE AND MEDALLION
Both symbols of Butler County Community College to be
used in academic ceremonies represent the foundation, history and
future of our college. The Mace, carried by the Vice President for
Academic Affairs, begins and ends every ceremonial procession. It
symbolizes the essence of BC3. A brass cap shaped like an acorn
protects an oak base engraved with the names of the original
Trustees, County Commissioners, and Founding President of the
college. The stainless steel top has oak inlays of the college seal on
one side and the BC3 logo on the other. The Butler County
Community College Foundation donated this mace at our thirtieth
commencement. The medallion symbolizes the Office of the
President and is worn with academic regalia at all formal college
ceremonies. It was a gift from the Student Senate in 1986 and was
designed by local artist and architect, John Gumpper.
THE COLLEGE
Butler County Community College (BC3), chartered in 1965,
was the first community college in Western Pennsylvania. On
September 26, 1966, the College opened its doors to 242 day and 190
evening students. Today, more than 4,400 students are enrolled in
credit programs. Another 20,000 people participate annually in
noncredit classes and workforce training programs available at BC3.
