A Message from the President<br />
Dear Graduates, welcome to the 42 nd <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Commencement</strong> Exercises at<br />
<strong>Butler</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong>.<br />
I hope each and every one of you understands the importance of this<br />
evening’s event. The commitment you have made toward achieving this<br />
accomplishment will pay incredible dividends over your lifetime. Not only do<br />
you have the satisfaction and knowledge associated with earning an impressive<br />
academic credential, the achievement of an associate’s degree will translate into<br />
additional annual earnings totaling $375,000.<br />
Whether you immediately enter the workforce or transfer to a senior<br />
institution, we are honored that you selected BC3 for your higher educational<br />
experience. Please understand the pride faculty and staff members feel as you are<br />
announced as a graduate. After all, each graduate is a living, breathing, walking<br />
testimony of what we provide as a community college.<br />
Make sure this evening to thank those who supported you along the way –<br />
your parents, spouse, family, friends, BC3 faculty and staff.<br />
In closing, please accept a heartfelt “congratulations” on your accomplishment.<br />

Mayor, City of <strong>Butler</strong><br />
Keynote Speaker<br />
Maggie Stock is a <strong>Butler</strong> native and a graduate of <strong>Butler</strong> High School. She<br />
earned her BA in English from Slippery Rock University and her MA in English<br />
from Eastern New Mexico University. She was a high school teacher and a technical<br />
writer in the metro Washington DC area before returning to <strong>Butler</strong>.<br />
She has been mayor since January 2006 and is currently in her second term.<br />
Active with the <strong>Butler</strong> Downtown Revitalization Committee, she is Director<br />
Emeritus on the Board.<br />
She is a professor of humanities at <strong>Butler</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong> where<br />
she has taught since 1985. She has served as grant director for both adult literacy<br />
and technical education programs, worked on several accreditation reports,<br />
produces a summer concert series and is one of the faculty advisors for the Pioneer<br />
Players student theater organization. She received a faculty service award in 2004-<br />
2005.<br />
Maggie is an active member of the <strong>Butler</strong> arts community. She chairs Ring in<br />
the Arts, the community New Year’s Eve celebration for the <strong>Butler</strong> Arts Council.<br />
She was a 2006 WQED/Dominion VITA award winner for her work with the<br />
Council. She is the co-founder of the Blazing Star Choral Society and current<br />
president of the Board of Directors.<br />
She is a member of the <strong>Butler</strong> Branch of the American Association of University<br />
Women.<br />

Dr. Kathleen M. Brown, DNP<br />
Class of 1983<br />
Distinguished Alumni Speaker<br />
Kathleen M. Brown graduated from BC3 in 1983 as a Licensed Practical Nurse.<br />
She continued her education at UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing, graduating<br />
in 1989. In 1993, Kathleen earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Carlow<br />
University. She earned a Master’s of Science in Health Services Administration in<br />
2003 from the University of St. Francis in Joliet, Illinois. Kathleen earned a Doctor<br />
of Nursing Practice in 2008 from Chatham University. Currently, she is employed<br />
by Carlow University teaching in their Masters and Doctoral Nursing programs.<br />
She has been a “Hope for Tomorrow - Race for the Cure” team organizer since<br />
1998 and volunteered with Pennsylvania State Police Troop D Camp Cadet as a<br />
camp nurse and board member from 1985 through 2005. Kathleen lives in<br />
Cheswick and is the youngest of six. Her parents are Robert and Catherine Brown<br />
of Chicora.

ACADEMIC REGALIA<br />
The wearing of Academic Regalia dates from the 12th century<br />
and has been in use in this country since Colonial days. An American<br />
Intercollegiate Code, adopted in 1894, and revised in 1960, established<br />
standard styles in faculty regalia.<br />
The code provides for three types of gowns. Those worn by<br />
the bachelors are black and have long pointed sleeves. Masters may<br />
wear either black silk or woolen gowns, made with a long closed<br />
sleeve with an arc appearing near the bottom of a slit for the arm. The<br />
doctor's gowns are usually of black silk with full, round, open<br />
sleeves.<br />
The hood is the most distinctive feature of academic attire. It<br />
is worn at the back, suspended near the shoulders. The length of the<br />
hood and width of its velvet border indicates the level of the degree<br />
held. The bachelors wear a hood which is three feet long with a twoinch<br />
velvet border. The hood for the master's degree is three and onehalf<br />
feet long, with a three-inch border. The doctor's hood is four feet<br />
long and the border is five inches wide. The lining of the hood is the<br />
official color or colors of the college or university conferring the<br />
degree.<br />

COLLEGE MACE AND MEDALLION<br />
Both symbols of <strong>Butler</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong> to be<br />
used in academic ceremonies represent the foundation, history and<br />
future of our college. The Mace, carried by the Vice President for<br />
Academic Affairs, begins and ends every ceremonial procession. It<br />
symbolizes the essence of BC3. A brass cap shaped like an acorn<br />
protects an oak base engraved with the names of the original<br />
Trustees, <strong>County</strong> Commissioners, and Founding President of the<br />
college. The stainless steel top has oak inlays of the college seal on<br />
one side and the BC3 logo on the other. The <strong>Butler</strong> <strong>County</strong><br />
<strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong> Foundation donated this mace at our thirtieth<br />
commencement. The medallion symbolizes the Office of the<br />
President and is worn with academic regalia at all formal college<br />
ceremonies. It was a gift from the Student Senate in 1986 and was<br />
designed by local artist and architect, John Gumpper.<br />
THE COLLEGE<br />
<strong>Butler</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong> (BC3), chartered in 1965,<br />
was the first community college in Western Pennsylvania. On<br />
September 26, 1966, the <strong>College</strong> opened its doors to 242 day and 190<br />
evening students. Today, more than 4,400 students are enrolled in<br />
credit programs. Another 20,000 people participate annually in<br />
noncredit classes and workforce training programs available at BC3.
