McCarrier A Message from the President Dear Graduates, welcome to the 42 nd Annual Commencement Exercises at Butler County Community College. I hope each and every one of you understands the importance of this evening’s event. The commitment you have made toward achieving this accomplishment will pay incredible dividends over your lifetime. Not only do you have the satisfaction and knowledge associated with earning an impressive academic credential, the achievement of an associate’s degree will translate into additional annual earnings totaling $375,000. Whether you immediately enter the workforce or transfer to a senior institution, we are honored that you selected BC3 for your higher educational experience. Please understand the pride faculty and staff members feel as you are announced as a graduate. After all, each graduate is a living, breathing, walking testimony of what we provide as a community college. Make sure this evening to thank those who supported you along the way – your parents, spouse, family, friends, BC3 faculty and staff. The Honorable Margaret D. Stock Mayor, City of Butler Keynote Speaker Maggie Stock is a Butler native and a graduate of Butler High School. She earned her BA in English from Slippery Rock University and her MA in English from Eastern New Mexico University. She was a high school teacher and a technical writer in the metro Washington DC area before returning to Butler. She has been mayor since January 2006 and is currently in her second term. Active with the Butler Downtown Revitalization Committee, she is Director Emeritus on the Board. She is a professor of humanities at Butler County Community College where she has taught since 1985. She has served as grant director for both adult literacy and technical education programs, worked on several accreditation reports, produces a summer concert series and is one of the faculty advisors for the Pioneer Players student theater organization. She received a faculty service award in 2004- 2005. Maggie is an active member of the Butler arts community. She chairs Ring in the Arts, the community New Year’s Eve celebration for the Butler Arts Council. She was a 2006 WQED/Dominion VITA award winner for her work with the Council. She is the co-founder of the Blazing Star Choral Society and current president of the Board of Directors. She is a member of the Butler Branch of the American Association of University Women. Dr. Kathleen M. Brown, DNP Class of 1983 Distinguished Alumni Speaker Kathleen M. Brown graduated from BC3 in 1983 as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She continued her education at UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing, graduating in 1989. In 1993, Kathleen earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Carlow University. She earned a Master’s of Science in Health Services Administration in 2003 from the University of St. Francis in Joliet, Illinois. Kathleen earned a Doctor of Nursing Practice in 2008 from Chatham University. Currently, she is employed by Carlow University teaching in their Masters and Doctoral Nursing programs. She has been a “Hope for Tomorrow - Race for the Cure” team organizer since 1998 and volunteered with Pennsylvania State Police Troop D Camp Cadet as a camp nurse and board member from 1985 through 2005. Kathleen lives in Cheswick and is the youngest of six. Her parents are Robert and Catherine Brown of Chicora.
