The RNANT/NU Board of Directors has the responsibility to set fees for service and notice must be given to the members in accordance with RNANT/NU Bylaw #3. As you know the Association raised its 2009 Active Practicing fees for 2009 and this rate will not change. There are a number of other services that we provide and charge fees for. The following chart will show the new fees structure for these services. The fee increases are more a reflection of the amount of staff time and resources that are used to provide these services, rather than a significant additional revenue stream. These fees are in line with fees charged by other jurisdictions. RNANT/NU Newsletter - Spring 2009 Page 21 New Support for Northerners who want to Quit Smoking NWT Quitline Launched March 1, 2009 In 2010, all cigarette packs sold in Canada will have a 1-800 smoking cessation number diplayed prominently on the pack. The toll free number will take the caller to the cessation service in their area. In order to be ready to provide this service in the NWT, Health and Social Services will be launching a smoking cessation line March 1, 2009. The NWT Quitline will be operated by the current providers of the Tele-Care Health Line. Funding support will be provided by Health Canada. How will it work? During the initial call a smoking cessation counsellor helps the caller to determine their readiness to quit. Callers in the contemplative stage (just thinking about quitting) are provided encouragement and offered printed materials and are advised to call back when they feel ready to quit. If the caller is ready, a series of up to 5 additional calls is planned with the smoker to support the quitting process. What can a Health Care Provider do? Health care providers can start the process directly for their patients (with their consent) by sending a fax referral to the NWT Quitline. The first phone call to the smoker will then be initiated by the Quitline at a time convenient for the smoker. Information, including posters, cessation brochures and fax referral forms will be sent to clinics and Health Centres in February. Highlights of the line include: - Cessation counsellors who are trained to help you quit smoking - Personalized call back programs based on your needs - Quit smoking reading materials available for your support - Translation services for all NWT languages - Service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
