The fifth NICEIC pocket guide, to be
distributed with the October Technical
Manual supplement and CD-ROM,
provides a reminder about the isolation
procedure to be followed to ensure that
an electrical installation, or part of it, is
made safe to work on.
The sixth guide in the series, to be
distributed with the January Technical
Manual and CD-ROM, will be on
permitted cable route zones in a wall or
partition.

L A N D LORDS’ LEGAL RESPONSIBILITIES TO I N C R EAS E
The NICEIC was one of over 35 exhibitors at this year’s London
Landlords’ Day, arranged by the London Private Sector Housing
Partnership.
The event was designed to provide help and support to anyone
letting or managing private rented accommodation in London,
and was held at the prestigious QEII Conference Centre in
Westminster.
The NICEIC stand was inundated with visitors wanting information
on Part P and how the changes will affect them and their legal
responsibility for electrical safety.
The introduction of Part P into the building regulations means that
it will become a requirement for landlords to be able to prove
that all electrical installation work, including alterations and
additions to existing installations, has been carried out and
certified by a competent person.
Many landlords were also interested in the implications of the
Landlord and Tenant Act 1985, which puts the onus on landlords
to ensure that electrical installations in their properties are safe
when tenancies begin, and that they are maintained in a safe
condition throughout those tenancies. NICEIC Engineers were on
hand to explain to landlords how having a periodic inspection on
the electrical installations in their properties would enable them to
fulfill their legal obligations.
Other exhibitors included the National Federation of Residential
Landlords, the National Landlords Association, the Health and
Safety Executive, mortgage advisors, and insurance providers.
Over 70 workshop sessions were available for delegates to attend
throughout the day, covering a broad range of topics.

BOOK UPDATED – A REMINDER
As announced in the Summer issue of
Connections, the NICEIC Inspection, Testing and
Certification book has been revised to take
account of the changes brought about by
Amendment 2 to BS 7671: 2001, and to
recognize the new three-page Domestic
Electrical Installation Certificate and the new
(purple) certificates for the NICEIC Domestic
Installer Scheme.
The revised, fourth, edition is distinguished by its
brown spine, which aligns with the colour
scheme of Amendment 2 to BS 7671. The
revised book includes an index to assist in the
rapid location of relevant information. Copies are
available now from NICEIC Sales – see enclosed
order form for details.
The third edition of the book, which was
distributed free of charge to all Approved
Contractors, will continue to be accepted as an
alternative to IEE Guidance Note 3 until further
notice.
