for sections greater than 1.2m, but less than 2.7m a sawlog of<br />

minimum length of the appropriate grade may be prepared at the<br />

discretion of the <strong>VicForests</strong>’ Customer; or<br />

for sections greater than 1.2m but less than 2.7m where the<br />

<strong>VicForests</strong>’ Customer does not wish to take this length it may be<br />

trimmed to waste.<br />

2.2 Multigrading<br />

The Contractor must ensure that:<br />

(a)<br />

at landings where logs are being dispatched to Customers accepting a<br />

range of log grades, log lengths containing more than one grade are<br />

permitted for cartage convenience, provided:<br />

(i) grade lengths are clearly identified and recorded; and<br />

(ii) each section of a multi-graded log are a minimum of 2.7m in<br />

length; and<br />

(iii) the multi-graded log must include a 0.1m allowance for cross<br />

cutting by the customer.<br />

2.3 Using pipe and defect quarter allowances<br />

The Contractor must ensure that:<br />

boxing and defect quarters are used where they increase the grade of<br />

logs; and<br />

boxes are measured around the centre of the log (diagram 1) in the<br />

following way:<br />

(i) measure two diameters at 90 degrees to each other; then<br />

(ii) calculate the average of these diameters to determine the pipe<br />

defect to be used on the card; then<br />

(iii) convert rectangular boxes to a square of approximately<br />

equivalent area.<br />

if the defect falls only in one quarter it should be treated as a defective<br />

quarter (diagram 1).<br />
