June 2011
From The Office
It is hard to believe that another year at Stephen Leacock is coming to an end. June is a very
busy month with the Grade 8 Band Trip, Gala des Etoiles/Talent Show, Junior and Intermediate
track and field, and many other activities.
It has been an exciting year with many highlights. Students have worked hard and learned many
new concepts. They have also applied their learning beyond the classroom. The Grade 7 and
Grade 8 Bands met the gold standard at MusicFest, and students competed in many sporting
events including soccer, basketball, volleyball and badminton.
As is always the case at the end of the school year, we say hello to new staff members and good
bye to other staff members. We welcome Mme Lyne Langlois who will be teaching grade 1
Physical Education and Mme Kristine Gavrel-McKeague who will be full-time in grade 3. Mrs.
Lacroix, in the office, will be leaving us to take a position at W.O. Mitchell Elementary School.
Our long term occasional teachers will also be leaving at the end of June so we will be saying
good bye to Ben Alexander, Crystal Davidson, Kathryn DeBodt, Nathan Hobson, Jennifer
Morrison, Mallory Wilson and Nicole Zahorka. We wish them all the best in their future
endeavours.
Finally it is with mixed emotions that I say goodbye to the Stephen Leacock community. Although
I look forward to the challenges of a new location, I will truly miss working with the students,
parents, teachers and support staff that make Stephen Leacock Public School such a wonderful
place to be.
Grade 8 Leaving Ceremony
The Grade 8 Leaving Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, June 28 at 12:30 p.m.
at Earl of March Secondary School. Boys should wear pants and a nice shirt and
girls would be appropriate in a summer dress or top and skirt.
Report Cards
Report cards will be distributed on Wednesday June 29, 2011.
Are you Moving
It is time for the office to make plans for the next school year. If you will be moving from our
Summer Hours
The school will be closed over the summer and the office will re-open August 29, 2011.
school bus routes will be available in the school office after August 29. Transportation information
Congratulations: Girls Intermediate Soccer Team
Congratulations to the Intermediate girls soccer team who won their regional tournament on June
1. The girls come out of the round robin with a tie and a win and went on to win in the finals
against Katimavik Elementary School, the score ended at 1-1. The game went into a five minute
overtime and we won after our fifth shooter! The girls played hard, came together as a team and
had some great goal tending! We wish them luck in the Soccer Championship on June 13. A big
thank you to coach Mme Getz!
Band News
FAMILY FUN FAIR A GREAT SUCCESS!
The Grade 8 Band did a fabulous job hosting the SLPS Family Fun Fair on May
27! Many families attended the fair, enjoying the games, raffles, cotton candy, snow
cones, and pizza!! As in previous years, Jars! Jars! Jars! was a big hit, and a number
of people had their caricatures done for the first time! There were some great raffle prizes and
many happy winners!! The Fair made a profit of almost $3000 in support of the school band trip
to Toronto and Niagara Falls from June 6-10. Many thanks to all the students and parent
volunteers who worked so hard to make the fair a success!!
SLPS proudly thanks its Fun Fair sponsors: Best Buy (Kanata), the Ottawa Senators
Foundation, the NAC English Theatre, Canadian Tire (Kanata), Spin Master Toys Limited,
Virgin Mobile Canada, World’s Finest Chocolate, and Mr. Power!!
Preventing Skin Cancer in Kids
Did you know that severe sunburns during childhood increase the risk of skin
cancer Teaching children sun safety habits while they are young can reduce
their risk of skin cancer in the future.
Protect your children from the sun by:
• Keeping them out of direct sunlight:
o During 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (when sun is strongest)
o When UV index is 3 or more
• Keeping them covered with:
o Closely woven full-length shirts and pants, wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses
o Broad-spectrum sunscreen and lip balm with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15
or greater, applied generously before insect repellent or other skin products
o Shade from trees, umbrellas or buildings
Although natural sunlight is needed to keep us healthy, a few minutes a day of exposure is all we
need. Protect yourself, protect your children!
