Beer Guide
Having trouble deciding Here’s a quick overview of the categories of beer.
With this much variety & so many to choose from, there’s a beer for everyone!
Light: Lagers that are light in both body
and color. They tend to be smooth & often have
lower alcohol & caloric contents.
Wheat (Weizen): Malted wheat,
in addition to barley, is used, which provides a
distinctive pale color, creamy texture & a light,
sweet flavor.
Lager: One of the two main styles of beer,
lagers are brewed with bottom-fermenting yeast
that ferments slowly at a low temperature to
creates a smoother, mellower beer. Lager beers are
light in color, high in carbonation & tend to be lower
in alcohol. Lagers are best served chilled.
Pilsner: This is the term for the classic
lager originally developed in Czechoslovakia
that is a pale, golden-hued & light.
Pale Ale: Gold to copper in color with a
mild, caramel-malt aroma. The flavor will
typically be bitter with caramel, noticeable
fruity esters, and earthy or floral hops.
IPA: Short for India Pale Ale, IPAs were
originally brewed in England for export to
India. The large quantities of hops added were
intended as a preservative & to mask potential offflavors
that might develop during the long voyage.
Ale: The other main beer style, ales are
brewed with top-fermenting yeast that ferments
more rapidly & at a higher temperature,
resulting in a more aromatic & fruity product.
Compared to lagers, ales have less carbonation &
should be served at a warmer temperature.
Amber / Red: Malty, hoppy beers
with a rich color. They can be ales or lagers &
tend to be fuller bodied.
ESB: Short for Extra Strong Bitter, ESBs are
highly hopped for a more dry & aromatic beer.
Despite “bitter” being in its name, they’re really
not all that bitter.
Brown Ale: Beer becomes darker
when the barley is kilned for a longer period of
time which also creates richer, deeper flavors.
Dunkel: Dark wheat beers that are
typically unfiltered (cloudy) & reddish-brown in
color. Darker malts add a touch of toasted &
caramel flavors which leads to a more robust flavor
than lighter wheat beers.
Bock: Dark lagers that are generally
stronger with more of a robust malt character
with a dark amber to brown hue.
Porter: Very bitter, very dark, this beer
was developed in England as a “nourishing“
drink for manual laborers such as porters.
Stout: Very dark & usually heavy, with
roasted unmalted barley & (often) caramel malt
or sugar. Stouts were invented by Guinness as a
variation on the traditional porter.
~ Other Classifications ~
Cider: Unlike beer, which is made from
malted barley, cider is produced apples, either
before fermentation (sweet cider) or after
fermentation (hard cider).
Lambic: Unlike conventional beers,
lambics are produced by spontaneous
fermentation & brewed with raw wheat & wild
yeast. For Fruit Lambics, whole fruits are added after
fermentation has started.
Gluten Free: Ranging in flavor & styles,
these beers are made from ingredients that don’t
contain glycoproteins (gluten).
Low—Alcohol: Sometimes called
Non-Alcoholic Beer, these beers have low alcohol
content (0.5% or less) & aim to reproduce the taste of
beer without the inebriating effects.
