SECONDARY BRAND elements
• INTRODUCTION
This style guide is designed to be used in conjunction with the FIBA Corporate Identity guidelines.
The Corporate Identity guidelines and rules must be respected at all times. The secondary
branding elements are designed to complement and enhance the primary brand, adding
movement and excitement to all branded materials.
The FIBA Secondary Branding System introduces 5 new dynamic Icons that represent the key
elements of the sport:
These elements are ‘CHALLENGE’, TEAM SPIRIT’, ‘STRENGTH’, ‘EXCITEMENT’ & ‘RESPECT’
The Icons can be applied in a varied colour palette with complementing backgrounds to create
a dynamic overall look. The backgrounds and Icons can be used across all media (eg, print,
broadcast, web) for all FIBA Events and across all FIBA Zones.
The toolkit for this secondary brand identity has been created with maximum creativity in mind,
allowing greater flexibility in design for any medium, whilst maintaining a unique and
distinguishable brand.
All of the toolkit elements are supplied in vector (.eps) format to achieve correct scaling with
the exception of any photographic elements and treatments. Rasterizing (converting from vector
to pixels) must only be applied once the scale and design is achieved. 300dpi or 120ppc is
recommended to maintain the quality and integrity of the designs.
The following guide will introduce the key Icons, colour palettes and backgrounds and show how
to compose any given design using these elements.
ICON
• INTRODUCTION
The FIVE key Icons: ‘CHALLENGE’, TEAM SPIRIT’, ‘STRENGTH’, ‘EXCITEMENT’ & ‘RESPECT’
can be used in all 8 colour palettes in 3D full colour (CMYK) 1 or flat colour versions (SPOT) 2 .
The Icons can be scaled up to fulfill any size requirement, but must not be scaled smaller than
the smallest version supplied within the toolkit. This is approximately 51mm in height for the 3D
version and 21mm for the flat (Spot colour) version. Size of Icons incorporated within patterns
(see page 11 patterns and backgrounds) do not need to adhere to this rule.
For anything below the 51mm size, there is only a flat (Spot colour) version 3 available.
The Icons can be positioned in any part of a design as long as all of the ‘action figure’ element
is visible.
No text or other design elements should touch or obscure the Icons in any way.
The key Icons can be used for any FIBA Event, Zone or Corporate requirement and in any of the
supplied palettes.
The Icons must be scaled vertically and horizontally in equal proportion. No distortions, effects or
strong filters are to be applied to any of the Icons. The scaling must be done at vector base and
only rasterized when scaling is complete.
COLOUR ICONS 1
The Icons must not be rotated, although crops can be applied as long as the ‘action figure’ is still
recognisable.
ICON
• USAGE and sizes
The Icons can be used at any size. The smallest Icon is supplied in a flat version at 21mm and
must not be used below this size. This Icon may be scaled to a maximum of 51mm in height.
There is a choice of icon styles available in the toolkit for usage above 51mm, these are full
colour, flat colour and outline, all of which can be scaled in pro to any given size.
The Icons are very flexible and may be used in a wide variety of ways – to deliver the maximum
creative freedom possible.
IMPLEMENTATION
Scaling applied equally
(horizontally & vertically)
Permitted Icon crop
(NOTE: action figure is
still recognisable)
If the size of any Icon needs to go below 51mm in
height, then the relevant small icon version should be
used instead. These have been specifically designed
to maintain clarity of line and detail.
• PALETTE
For literature and other materials which are not Zone specific or part of a competition or event
inventory, a generic corporate palette (GOLD) has been designed which can be applied to
production materials such as stationery or FIBA Corporate PR or other generic elements.
The corporate colours may be used as generic backdrops and in other production items for
PATTERNS & BACKGROUNDS
• INTRODUCTION
The main background is a gradient tint that can be used in any of the main colour palettes.
Flat Icons, line-art Icons or ‘watermark’ Icons can be overlaid on this background using either
the multiply, transparency or screen filters to achieve a wide range of creative results.
A ‘matrix’ pattern of the flat Icons in both vertical and horizontal formats have been created.
These exist with either linear repeat (even) edges or ‘pushed’ (irregular) edges.
The supplied pattern can then be applied around imagery using ‘FLAG’ warps at any given angle,
bend or percentage to achieve an aesthetic flowing ‘movement’ or style. The precise warps
and bends should be carefully chosen to work with the implied action in the image, to echo the
movement of the player, arms, legs or the ball.
These overlaid patterns can be scaled to any size to best suit the specific design.
PATTERNS & BACKGROUNDS
• USAGE
Below is the process used to create the correct graduated background.
Radial Gradient
Gradient Layer 1
Firstly a radial gradient is made with
colour changes at the appropriate
positions.
Gradient Layer 2
This is then duplicated and flipped
vertically.
Finished Background
On the transparency palette the option
of screen is then selected on the second
version, and the two are placed over the
top of one another.
13

PATTERNS & BACKGROUNDS
• USAGE
The supplied backgrounds and patterns allow maximum creativity whilst retaining a signature
style. These flowing, graduated backgrounds are the foundation of the designs to link Icons,
imagery and text together.
Gradients can be made from any of the key palettes, with patterns at different sizes and using
applied effects and transparencies.
PHOTOGRAPHIC
• TREATMENTS
Photographic imagery can only be used for non-commercial purposes within a secondary
branding context and FIBA must approve any photographic application.
Photographs must be from FIBA Events and FIBA approved. ‘Action’ images are the preferred
type of photograph. Once an image has been selected, various effects are applied within
Photoshop©. The desired result should be ‘dynamic’ in presentation, representing one or more of
the 5 FIBA keywords – ‘CHALLENGE’, TEAM SPIRIT’, ‘STRENGTH’, ‘EXCITEMENT’ & ‘RESPECT’.
Harshly lit, saturated on court photographs need to be toned down and graded using
the following criteria. This will slightly desaturate the colour and heighten the contrast.
Movement is emphasised by the shadow. This is just a guide and different photographs
might need varying adjustments.
Warped icon patterns are then applied around the photograph to emphasise movement,
excitement and action. The patterns need to enhance and compliment the photographic shape.
18

FIBA EVENTS
• INTRODUCTION
FIBA hosts Events throughout the world at a variety of locations, covering different seasons and
competitions. Therefore the style palette must be applied with relevance to each specific Event,
not location.
For example, a country hosting an event can choose to use a different colour palette than that
determined by its Zone palette (see Zone pages 18-26). This ensures that the location is seen as
secondary to the event.
However, where the location is the dominant factor, then the Zone palette must be applied.
Sponsors and partners can be ‘contained’ within an appropriate shape derived from the styles,
ie the oval of the icon could be used as the shape to hold the partner logos.
New colours may be introduced with the styles for the appropriate event, but the new styles must
be consistent throughout the event.
FIBA SECONDARY IDENTITY
vers.1.0 © FIBA 2009
19

FIBA EVENTS
• ICON COLOUR ADAPTATION
The style palette should be applied appropriately, to compliment each specific Event composite
logo. It is not mandatory to use only the FIBA Zone or the Event/Location colours, but the colour
choice must have some relevance to the Event or the Location. This might involve use of flag
colours, or colours from nature, something that is undeniably Event or Location specific.
Example, the Turkey World Championship. The Turkey Composite Logo design consists of mainly
red, meaning that the use of a red background and red Icons would be ineffective in making the
logo stand out. So the cyan element of the logo could be utilised and applied to the styling of all
secondary elements.
Whilst new colours may be introduced the overall style must remain recognisable as FIBA
secondary branding. Any of the toolkit elements may be adapted in this way to suit a given Event.
If an approved font is used for an Event, this may also be introduced into the design.
Adaptation of an Icon’s colour reflecting an element from within the logo.
20

FIBA EVENTS
• APPLICATION EXAMPLES
The image below shows an example of an Event where new colours have been applied to
highlight the composite logo.
The Event composite logo must always be present, with a copyright notice applied and SRP
(partner strip) where required.
This is just one example of how the secondary branding elements might be applied.
A colour palette is developed from
the cyan element within the logo
Gradients and patterns are then
adapted from this palette
Warp and effect blends are
applied to enhance the
photographic imagery
Photographic treatments are
applied as per guidelines
FIBA might require the presence
of a Partner strip which will be
defined case by case
FIBA might require the presence of a Partners strip which will be defined case by case
All photographic imagery must reflect fully the nature of the given event.
FIBA ZONES
• INTRODUCTION
FIBA is divided up into 5 separate world Zones. Each of these Zones has a designated colour by
which it is identified (as shown below).
The secondary brand elements incorporate a number of components designed to further enable
differentiation between these Zones.
A set of Icons are available that reflect the colourway allocated to each Zone. These can be used
whenever it is important to emphasise a particular Zone rather than location or Event.
