Taraflex Combisport 28 / AE 28 Systems
Installation Instructions
1 – Cross Section
2 – Storage Conditions
The “System 28” must be stored in dry, covered, level, frost-free conditions. This should be within the
sports hall, or area of installation for acclimatisation
ACCLIMATISATION
Three days prior to installation, the ambient relative humidity of the hall should be within working design
tolerances, and ambient temperatures in the range of 15˚C - 30˚C. Once this criteria has been met, any
protective wrappings from the “System 28” panels should be removed to allow acclimatisation of these
elements. The alternative is to loose-lay the boards for a minimum period of three days prior to fixing.
UK climatic conditions demand acclimatisation.
It is recommended that all systems are installed in the same working environment as specified in the
design brief, particularly with regard to ambient temperature (normally 16˚C - 20˚C) and humidity
(normally 30% - 60%). In addition, attention is drawn to the recommendations contained in
BS8201.1987, particularly sections one and six. When moisture is present in the structure, the area
should be ventilated for approximately 4 – 6 weeks prior to installation of the systems, and thereafter,
maintained in a controlled environment to the above criteria.
SUB-BASE
The Sub-Base must be dry, clean, smooth & level BS 8204 SR1 (3mm deviation over 2 metre straight
edge), free of nibs or loose material, and constructed to withstand design loads.
Note:
The performance of the System 28 will be adversely affected if it is installed over an uneven
subfloor. Therefore we cannot guarantee the performance if fitted outside the above
recommendations.
VAPOUR BARRIER
A vapour barrier, such as minimum 1200 gauge polythene sheeting, should be installed over all ground
level slabs and new concrete bases above ground level, Joints shall be lapped a minimum of 150mm,
and should be taped and sealed with waterproof adhesive tape, with edges upturned to the same height
as the plywood overlay board at all perimeter walls.
5 – Positioning Perimeter
PERIMETER EDGE DETAIL
“System 28” sports boards, as in common with other wood based products; attract moisture, resulting in
expansion or contraction when installed in a new building or a building undergoing renovation. We
would recommend for a sports hall up to approx 800 m² that a minimum gap of 20mm is left at all
perimeter and abutments. For sports halls in excess of 800 m² contact Gerflor Technical Department.
The expansion gap is then filled with “System 28” Perimeter Foam (20mm x 50mm) and then trimmed to
finished board level. The Gerflor Taraflex Sport M Plus or Taraflex Surface is then fitted in the normal
manner to within 10mm of the perimeter wall. Skirting/rebound boards should be fitted after the
installation of the floor covering. Any skirting/rebound boards should be wall fixed only 1mm proud of
the surface of the floor.
6 – Laying Combisport 28
PANEL INSTALLATION
Starting at the furthest point from the entrance check measure the hall dimensions to ensure that no
less that 1/3 rd of board width will be left in the last row and if necessary cut down the first row and lay
the panels with resilient rubber strips to the subfloor, in continuous runs against the far wall up to, but
not compressing the expansion strip, thereby maintaining the required 20mm to the wall.
Continue laying the boards, glueing the tongues, ensuring that there is a minimum 300mm stagger
between rows, that there is a resilient rubber strip adjacent to the wall and that the strips run in a
continuous straight line across all rows of panels.
Do not walk on the boards until the adhesive is fully cured (24 hours)
CUTTING PANELS
At the end of a run where a panel requires cutting to fit, place an appropriate 600mm length of the
resilient rubber strip on the floor against the expansion strip. Apply the PVA glue onto the back of the
strip and then place the cut panel on top. Ensure that the panel edges are supported.
7 - Laying the Taraflex Top Surface
A careful check should be made prior to installation of the Sport M Plus or Taraflex Surface, to establish
if there are any raised joints that need to be sanded level using a flat-bedded sanding machine.
Once checked the entire area would need to be overcoated with Ardex (or similar) Feather Finish to
eliminate the possibility of any joints `grinning’ through the playing surface. The use of cementitious
levelling compounds for timber floors is not recommended. Gerflor Gerfix E120 adhesive should be used
to adhere the Taraflex Sport M Plus or Taraflex Surface material. Please refer to separate Taraflex Sport
M Plus or Taraflex Surface Installation Instructions for specific information.
Taraflex Combisport 28 - Total overall height of Gerflor Combisport 28 system including the
Sport M Plus playing surface is 35mm
Taraflex AE 28 - Total overall height of Gerflor AE 28 system including the Taraflex playing
surface is 30mm
