f) If the dose rate with a particular equipment exceeds this criterion a<br />
stated in above one of the following courses of action should be taken:<br />
i) Use a container and accessories which provide more shielding for the<br />
operator.<br />
ii) Reduce the strength of the sealed source.<br />
iii) Use a projection type container.<br />
iv) As last resort, reduce the work load of the individual operator so that<br />
he shall not receive an excessive dose.<br />
g) For a given job the source strength sold be selected to give reasonable<br />
exposure times compatible with acceptable doses to the operator. For<br />
example if a strong source is used for radiography of small pipe the<br />
exposure times may be too short to enable the operator to work in a<br />
safe manner.<br />
8.17.6 Safety equipment<br />
8.17.6.1 Radiation does rate meters<br />
The most important single item of SAFETY equipment is a radiation does<br />
rate meter.<br />
One should be generally available to each classified worker and readily<br />
available to each competent person, and be in the possession of each<br />
person in charge of radiography on a site.<br />
8.17.6.2 Audible alarm monitors.<br />
These instrument that indicate the presence of radiation by an audible<br />
signal, and are small enough to be carried in a pocket.<br />
