Herbs. Stems to 40 cm, slender and trailing at base, erect<br />

above, villous when young. Leaves cauline; stipules triangularovate,<br />

8–10 mm, abaxially villous; petiole <strong>1.</strong>5–2.5 cm, densely<br />

villous; blade ovate or narrowly ovate, asymmetric, 6–9 × 3.5–<br />

4.5 cm, papery, sparsely hispidulous, venation palmate-pinnate,<br />

base oblique, cordate, margin sharply denticulate, apex long<br />

acuminate. Inflorescences hairy; bracts ovate, 8–9 mm, abaxially<br />

pubescent, margin serrate. Staminate flowers: pedicel ca.<br />

<strong>1.</strong>5 cm; tepals 4(or 5), pink, hairy, outer 2 ovate, ca. <strong>1.</strong>5 × 1 cm,<br />

abaxially villous, inner 2 narrow, ovate-oblong, ca. 8 × 2 mm;<br />

stamens numerous; filaments ca. <strong>1.</strong>2 mm, free; anthers elliptic,<br />

ca. 1 mm, apex emarginate. Pistillate flowers: tepals 5, hairy,<br />

outer 2 broadly ovate, ca. 10 × 8 mm, inner 2 narrow, ovate-oblong,<br />

This species is similar to Begonia alveolata but differs by its<br />

sharply denticulate leaf margin and abaxially hairy outer tepals.<br />

Herbs, rhizomatous. Rhizomes creeping, tortuous, crispedpilose.<br />

Leaves all basal; stipules caducous, ovate or triangular,<br />

5–7.5 × 3–4 mm, ciliate; petiole 4–16 cm, hirsute-villous; blade<br />

adaxially with a whitish band, obliquely broadly ovate, 5–14 ×<br />

4–10.5 cm, papery, abaxially crisped-pilose, major veins villous,<br />

adaxially densely tuberculate-based setulose, basally 5–7-<br />

veined, tertiary veins percurrent and reticulate, base cordate,<br />

margin denticulate or serrulate, apex acute or acuminate. Inflorescences<br />

axillary; peduncle 6.5–12 cm; flowers 3–15 in a dichasial<br />

cyme; bracts caducous. Staminate flower: pedicel 0.6–2<br />

cm; tepals 4, outer 2 broadly ovate or suborbicular, 6–11 × 6.5–<br />

10 mm, apex rounded, inner 2 obovate-oblong, ca. 7 × 3 mm,<br />

apex obtuse; androecium zygomorphic; stamens numerous; filaments<br />

0.7–<strong>1.</strong>3 mm, fused at base into a short column; anthers<br />

obovoid, 0.7–0.9 mm. Pistillate flower: tepals 3, outer 2 broadly<br />

ovate, inner 1 smaller; ovary ellipsoid, glabrous, l-loculed with<br />

parietal placentation; styles 3. Capsule nodding, oblong, 5–10 ×<br />

3.5–5 mm, subequally 3-winged, wings lunate.<br />

This variety is somewhat similar to Begonia picturata but differs<br />

by its much smaller flowers and intercostal spots on the adaxial leaf<br />

surface.<br />

Herbs, deciduous, 20–30 cm tall. Tubers 1–2 cm in diam.<br />

Leaves 1(or 2); stipules caducous, triangular-ovate, ca. 5 mm,<br />

membranous; petiole 14–21 cm, pilose; blade broadly cordateovate,<br />

asymmetric, 9–14 × 11–17 cm, abaxially sparsely hispidulous,<br />

adaxially sparsely hirsute, venation palmate, 7-veined,<br />

base cordate, slightly asymmetric, margin irregularly serrate,<br />

shallowly divided to ca. 1/3 of leaf length; lobes 5–7, apex acuminate.<br />

Inflorescences terminal, racemose at base, 16–30 cm tall,<br />

pilose; bracts ovate-lanceolate, ca. 5 mm, glabrous, apex acute.<br />

Staminate flowers: pedicel 8–12 mm; tepals 4, pinkish, outer 2<br />

broadly ovate, ca. 10 × 9 mm, abaxially pilose, inner 2 oblanceolate,<br />

9–11 × 3–4 mm; stamens numerous; filaments ca. <strong>1.</strong>2<br />
