Reach Out and Read
Reach Out and Read San Diego
encourages families to read together
and promotes early literacy while
building the relationship between
parents and medical providers. At
each well child medical appointment,
children six months to five years old
are given a developmentally and age appropriate book with an
accompanying prescription for parents and children to read. This
popular program makes taking medicine fun!
Logan Heights Family Health Center Pediatrician Dr. Marsha Spitzer discusses the Reach Out and
Read program with Congresswoman Susan Davis during a tour of the clinic.
To donate gently used children’s books in English or
Spanish for our pediatric waiting rooms, or to make a
financial donation, please call (619) 515-2562.
Cox Kids Foundation Grants Healthcare Support
for Youth and Children in City Heights
Diego’s Logan Heights Family Health Center.
San Diego Padres’ Pad Squad
Kudos to Cox Kids Foundation for their commitment to improve
the lives of San Diego’s children and youth! This fall the foundation
provided a generous grant to help cover uninsured pediatric visits at
our City Heights Family Health Center. Now parents won’t have to
worry about cost when their little ones are sick and need to see the
doctor! Thank you to all our friends at Cox Kids Foundation for your
caring partnership.
Laughter is often the best medicine, especially when it’s caused by
Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer and the
San Diego Padres’ Pad Squad. Family Health Centers of San Diego’s
Logan Heights Family Health Center played host to the group of
entertainers in September when they dropped in to cheer up
children and adults alike. Smiles were all around as they played
with children and posed for photos.
Holiday Baby Boutique Program
Family Health Centers of San Diego’s prenatal program cares for more
than 2,000 moms and newborns each year. Many of these families
struggle to purchase the supplies and clothing they need for their
newborns. So, we created the Baby Boutique to help. Patients get
“Baby Bucks” at their post natal visits and then shop for new and
gently used items at the Baby Boutique.
We’d be honored if you would “adopt” our Baby Boutique Program this
holiday season. You can purchase new or gather gently used items
from friends and family. Our wish list and drop off instructions are
listed below. What a wonderful way to get into the holiday spirit and
know that you are helping little ones in need.
To participate or get more information, please contact us at
foundation@fhcsd.org. You can also make a financial donation to the
program online at www.fhcsd.org/donations.
Thank you to the Hispanic Organization for Leadership and
Awareness (HOLA) for hosting a Baby Boutique drive at CareFusion.
HOLA was founded nearly 3 years ago by Carlos Fonseca to promote
the Hispanic culture within CareFusion. Their purpose is to enrich
the work environment, develop leaders, raise awareness and actively
participate in becoming a premier diversity company. This is the
second annual Baby Boutique drive that HOLA has sponsored for
FHCSD. Special thanks to HOLA co-chairs Tina Mena and Lenin
Lopez for organizing this successful drive for the Baby Boutique!
Chargers Ladies Club Visit and Volunteer at the Baby Boutique
Many thanks to the Chargers Ladies Club members Donna Mannigel,
Jane McGuire, Sue Brown, Brenda Ramsdell, Lacie Stuckey for
volunteering at our Baby Boutique. Over two years ago, this
community-supported patient incentive program was created
through generous fundraising from Nancy Turner and the Chargers
Ladies Club. Their continued support helps patients attend their
health education classes, follow through on well baby check-ups and
attend important immunization visits. Thank you Chargers Ladies
Club for helping our San Diego families stay healthy!
Community members were treated to a healthy day of fun at
the 5th annual “¡Vive tu Vida! Get Up! Get Moving! Health Fair”
courtesy of the National Alliance for Hispanic Health and Family
Health Centers of San Diego. This free family event promoted
physical, healthy and active lifestyles in the Latino community.
Free health screenings, health education and fun physical
activities like Zumba, aerobics and tennis were available to
the hundreds of visitors.
Community members utilized the free
vision screening and testing at the fair.
Dental Emergency!
Our Dental Clinics are under attack! We recently learned that the
Department of Health Care Services is planning to recoup almost
a million dollars it paid Family Health Centers of San Diego to
provide dental treatment to low income adults last year. We
can’t take back the root canals or extractions- it is not fair for
them to take back the payment! We are currently fighting this
plan by the state and are asking you to contact your legislators
and ask them to “stop Denti-Cal recoupment now!” For more
information on the recoupment fight, please contact Government
and Media Relations Manager Ben Avey at 619-798-3617.
Incredible Support for Exceptional Care
Farrell Family Foundation Supports
Kid Care Express Mobile Medical Unit
We thank the Farrell Family Foundation for their support of our
Kid Care Express Mobile Medical Unit. Through the mobile medical
units, at-risk children and families who have difficulty accessing
primary health care services can receive the medical attention they
need. These services include well check-ups, preventive care, sick
care, health screenings and referral services. The mobile medical
units go to 70 locations throughout San Diego - at schools, community
centers, public housing complexes, homeless shelters and
neighborhood locations.
Year-End Giving
When you make a year-end gift, you’re not just giving money.
You are perpetuating your own values about the quality of life.
You’re saying, “I see what Family Health Centers of San Diego
is doing to provide accessible, quality health care to many of
my fellow San Diegans. They are there to help those in critical
need of medical care and helping keep our community a healthy
place for all of us. I want to help FHCSD continue to take care
of our friends.”
The end of the calendar year, especially, marks the time when
many people think about making charitable gifts. If you itemize
on your income tax return, you’re able to deduct charitable
gifts you have made during the past year.
and you avoid all federal capital gains tax that would otherwise
be due on the sale of your appreciated property.
The availability of the income tax deduction helps you plan your
year-end giving.
We know that if you support us, it’s because you believe in
what we are doing at Family Health Centers of San Diego.
And for that, we thank you!
For more information on year-end giving contact Edith Glassey,
Director of Philantrophy at edithg@fhcsd.org or 619-906-4508.
The income tax deduction. The income tax deduction helps
because it makes the cost of donating less than the value received
by the charity. Here is an example:
Your neighbor, who is in the 31% federal tax bracket, makes a gift
of $1,000. The cost of this gift calculates to be $690. The $310
difference is the tax that the donor would have paid had no gift
been made. Family Health Centers of San Diego of course
benefits from the full value of the $1,000.
You aren’t limited to giving cash. Just a reminder that IRA
owners age 70 ½ or older may gift up to $100,000 from their
IRA or Roth IRA to a qualified charitable organization such as
Family Health Centers of San Diego with no tax consequences.
Appreciated property is ideal for giving. Assets like stocks, bonds,
and real estate that have gone up in value over time are excellent
choices for gifts. The charitable income tax deduction is based (in most
circumstances) on the value of the asset on the date of the gift,
cut / tear along this line
