GEMACO has stepped up 

its ambitions as a European 

brand promoter by combining 

setting up in the UK with three 

new acquisitions. 

Gemaco says its arrival in the UK 

represents an important step for all 

its customers here. 

A spokesman told PPD: “They 

will now have access to the best 

possible service, all tailored to the 

specific needs of the local market.” 

The UK operation is being headed 

up by Managing Director Andrew 

Howarth and Sales Director 

Andrea Crafton. 

Back at head office, CIO Ulrik 

Heidbüchel will be responsible for 

developing Gemaco in the UK until 

the business is locally mature 

enough to work and source directly 

within the Gemaco Group supply 

chain. 

Gemaco’s first acquisition came 

at the beginning of this year, in the 

form of ITC Sales Promotion. 

The Gemaco spokesman said: 

“ITC was already a true specialist 

in active marketing and attached 

great importance to corporate social 

responsibility. Thanks to the 

acquisition, the ITC team can offer 

a supply chain that’s even better, 

in combination with a footprint at 

European level. 

Gemaco’s second acquisition 

this year is CCO Poulis, a wellknown 

name on the Dutch sales 

promotion market. 

Despite higher sales in 2012 

compared with the previous year, 

and a growing international client 

portfolio, CCO Poulis suffered 

financial difficulties and Gemaco 

Nederland decided to take over 

part of their activities when the target 

company’s financial situation 

became unsustainable. 

At the same time, Gemaco made 

an important acquisition in Germany, 

where the activities of Viering 

now continue under the Gemaco 

brand. 

The Gemaco spokesman said: 

“This name change will boost the 

brand visibility and position of the 

Gemaco Group throughout Europe. 

“The corporate and fulfilment 

clients will be serviced from 

the German headquarters in 

Mönchengladbach.” 

The series of acquisitions means 

that Gemaco has now become one 

of the largest market players in 

Germany, with a local turnover expected 

to exceed 10 million euros 

this year.

for more than 30 years.

Proforma sets up a base in UK 

PROFORMA has announced the 

opening of its first European office 

in London. 

David Garnelas, pictured top 

left, has joined the company to 

increase its international presence 

and expand the Proforma brand 

into new markets worldwide. 

Proforma founder Greg Muzzillo, 

bottom left, told PPD: “We are 

very excited David has come on 

board as our first European Proforma 

owner. 

“The company continues to 

grow each year and expanding into 

Europe is a part of our mission to 

become a global brand and open 

the door to more international opportunities 

for our owners.” 

Proforma is a $430 million provider 

of graphic communications

The marketing solutions distributor 

has more than 750 locations 

in North America and is considered 

one of the top five largest 

companies in the industry.

AS PPD went to press, a frantic 

rearguard action was being 

fought to stop the umbrella 

organisation of the 

European pharmaceutical 

industry from banning all 

use of promotional products. 

The industry intends to pass 

such a resolution at the end of this 

month. 

In an open letter, the Promotional 

Product Services Institute 

(PSI) said: “It was only thanks 

to its good supplier relationship 

with the pharmaceutical industry 

that the PSI heard of this in 

good time. Even the associations 

who we, as the PSI, are a member 

of were only informed indirectly 

about the situation.” 

German trade body GWV immediately 

called a telephone 

conference, during which all 

stakeholders co-ordinated their 

activities. Arguments were gathered 

to reason with the pharmaceutical 

industry to reverse its 

intention. 

At the end of last month, the 

representatives of European associations 

met representatives of 

the pharmaceutical industry in 

Frankfurt. 

The PSI letter added: “Investigations 

are under way to find 

out about the positions held by 

individual member companies of 

EFPIA (the European Federation 

of Pharmaceutical Industries and 

Associations). 

“It may be assumed that the 

American companies active in 

Europe wish to ban any such use, 

in line with the American model. 

“We urge anybody maintaining 

any contacts into any of those 

companies to bring about a dialogue 

between the marketing side 

and those in charge of association 

matters in those companies. 

“It is vital to convey, through 

discussions, that this industry is 

unnecessarily depriving itself of a 

highly effective promotional tool. 

Unnecessarily, because giveaways 

are not viewed critically in any 

quarter – not in the media, not by 

the tax authorities, not by politicians. 

Quite the opposite – in election 

campaigning, politicians use 

millions of giveaways themselves. 

“Furthermore, there are effectiveness 

studies done by very reputable 

market researchers proving 

very clearly that promotional 

articles are a highly effective advertising 

medium. 

“All of us must proceed very 

diplomatically at this stage to 

avoid an outright rejection of any 

discussion at all from the pharmaceutical 

industry. Insults and 

insinuations are entirely counterproductive 

in this situation. This 

remark is meant for all those who 

may already have sent out ‘angry 

letters’. 

“We are optimistic that we will 

succeed in bringing about discussions. 

At this stage, there is no 

way of telling whether these will 

be effective or not. 

“However, the extreme secrecy 

with which the pharmaceutical 

industry has surrounded the issue 

is an indication that they intend 

to go through with this ban.” 

The UK has already banned 

the advertising of and use of promotional 

products for prescription 

pharmaceuticals and a voluntary 

ban exists in the US. 

Fun day for a good cause 

UNDER grey and misty skies, the 

staff of Fluid Branding took part in 

a day of fun games to raise funds 

for their chosen charity Children’s 

Hospice South West. 

They entered two teams into 

the fun corporate challenge, the 

Lycra-clad Matt’s Motivators and 

the feisty Trevithick Tigers FC. 

Battling against water, foam, 

bouncy castles, penguin costumes 

and each other, much fun 

was had by all taking part and 

spectating. 

The Fluid Branding team have 

taken part in lots of other events 

to raise funds for the charity, including 

Plymouth Half Marathon, 

Corporate Challenge, Moonlight 

Memory Walk, Plymouth 10k and 

Barcelona or Bust, a banger rally 

challenge covered in a previous 

edition of PPD. 

Director Matt Franks said: “Well 

done to all of the teams who competed 

– it was a great day, if a bit 

damp.” 

Children’s Hospice South West 

funds three hospices in Cornwall, 

Devon and Somerset, providing 

respite care for children with 

life-limiting illnesses.

I DON’T know about you, 

but one of my guilty TV pleasures 

is The Apprentice. 

Yes, it’s entirely ludicrous, 

and the people on there are 

the sort most of us wouldn’t 

let within a continent of 

our own businesses, but 

it’s compelling stuff. And – 

just sometimes – there are 

real-life lessons to be drawn 

from it. 

Among the most memorable 

for our industry would 

be Adam Corbally’s baptism 

of fire into the logistics of 

printing. 

This season, it was Zee’s 

defeat on his “home turf” of 

Dubai that struck me. 

There’s no doubt that 

some distributors (and even 

end users) are occasionally 

tempted to try dealing direct 

with factories in the Far East. 

But the pitfalls are legion. 

Zee thought he had the 

buying task in the bag because 

he had lived in Dubai 

– but he still didn’t know the 

difference between a perfume 

and an Arabic lute. 

His sub-team didn’t fare 

that much better either, 

managing to end up with a 

UAE flag the size of a napkin 

due to their inability to distinguish 

inches from centimetres. 

I know – you laugh, and so 

do I. But habitual Apprentice 

incompetence aside, these 

are just the sort of trapdoors 

waiting to open up below the 

unsuspecting ingenue who 

decides that cutting out the 

middle man is an attractive 

financial option. 

Sure, some of you might 

make it through unscathed. 

But for many others, there’s 

an oud about to hit you 

around the head . . .

THE ORGANISERS of the record-breaking 

Trade Only 

National Show have announced 

that next year’s 

event – the eighth of its kind 

– will be open longer. 

For 2014, the show will open at 

9am on both days. 

Nigel Bailey, Event Director 

for Trade Only, said: “The longer 

hours are good news for visitors 

and exhibitors alike. 

“The new times are designed to 

reduce queuing, especially on the 

extremely busy first morning. Additionally, 

there is now more time 

for visitors to explore the show.” 

Gail Kilcoyne, Exhibition Manager 

for the show, added: “This 

is another example of how we 

continuously look at all areas of 

the show, and the feedback we 

receive, and strive to provide a 

better experience for visitors and 

exhibitors alike. The show has 

grown by leaps and bounds and 

the pressure on the registration 

desks on day one is enormous, 

with visitors eager to get into the 

show, so it just makes sense to extend 

the show hours.” 

The 2013 show was hailed as 

the most successful promotional 

products show ever held in the 

UK, and broke previous records, 

with 3,000 delegates through the 

doors of the Ricoh Arena in Coventry 

over the two days. 

Show goers are offered a superb 

package of a record 340-plus 

exhibitors, world class speakers, 

daily fashion shows, live manufacturing 

demonstrations and 

free Wi-Fi, along with the prestigious 

bpma Awards Dinner. The 

show welcomes attendees from 

52 countries worldwide. 

The Trade Only National Show 

2014 will be held at the Ricoh Arena, 

Coventry, on January 22 and 

23. 

Ads ruling causes a stink 

A RULING by the High Court 

has ended a five-year legal battle 

between Marks & Spencer and 

Interflora – and could have implications 

for the promotional 

products industry. 

The court ruled in favour of 

the flower delivery network, concluding 

that the retail giant had 

breached trademark infringement 

laws by bidding on the keyword 

”Interflora” in its Google Ad- 

Words campaigns. 

In the European Union, Google 

allows bidding on trademarked 

keywords except when the ads are 

deemed to be misleading. 

The ruling found M&S in 

breach of that exception. 

In the judgment, Mr Justice 

Arnold said that M&S’s use of the 

“Interflora” keyword to advertise 

its own flower and gift website 

constituted a trademark infringement. 

The judge added that the M&S 

text ads “did not enable reasonably 

well-informed and reasonably 

attentive internet users” to 

determine if the ads referred for 

M&S or Interflora. 

He added: “On the contrary, 

a significant proportion of the 

consumers who searched for ‘Interflora’ 

– and then clicked on 

M&S’s advertisements – were led 

to believe, incorrectly, that M&S’s 

flower delivery service was part of 

the Interflora network.” 

A quick Adwords search by PPD 

revealed that a number of promotional 

products companies appear 

to be illegally using competitor 

and trademarked keywords.

ITALIAN promotions company 

Brand to Be has joined 

forces with SPS and Elasto-Form 

to develop the extensive 

range of EU-manufactured 

plastics and 

promotional items of those 

two companies in the Italian 

market. 

Brand to Be, formerly known 

as Giving Europe Italia, was established 

in 2008 as the exclusive 

Italian Agent of Giving Europe BV. 

In May this year, the company 

changed its name to Brand to Be, 

to reflect a gradual shift in Italian 

customers’ requirements and an 

evolution in its product portfolio. 

A Brand to Be spokesman told 

PPD: “Italian customers have 

shown an increasing demand for 

‘Made in Europe’ items and they 

have also started to request a 

higher standard of quality assurance 

and shorter lead-time. 

“In addition, to better serve its 

customers, the product portfolio 

offered by Brand To Be has progressively 

evolved to include topof-the-range 

‘Made in Italy’ gifts 

and a new textiles range, in order 

to meet the needs of the market.” 

Further to “Made in Italy”, the 

new partnership with SPS and 

Elasto-Form will add “Made in 

England” and “Made in Germany” 

to the Brand to Be portfolio. 

Brand to Be will market its portfolio 

of products through a selected 

network of customers in the 

promotional market. 

Its CEO, Stefano Zaccaria, said:

built up an excellent assortment 

of products and services, as well 

as an exclusive production entirely 

made in Europe. 

“We are looking forward to 

working with both of them to further 

develop the distribution of 

the entire product range.” 

IN BRIEF 

DEFINITIVE anti-dumping duties 

on imports of ceramic tableware 

and kitchenware originating in 

China have been imposed by the 

European Union. 

The duties range from 13.1% to 

23.4% for co-operating Chinese 

companies (around 400 of them) 

and 36.1% for non-cooperating 

companies. New exporters will be 

subject to a duty rate of 17.9%. 

The move makes permanent 

the provisional imposition implemented 

in November last year, 

which caused shockwaves and 

anger in the promotional products 

industry. 

A majority of member states 

voted for the imposition of the definitive 

measures, which also had 

the backing of European ceramics 

producers. There has, however, 

been a downgrading of some of 

the taxation levels. 

A spokesman for the European 

Promotional Product Association 

(EPPA) told PPD: “EPPA is proud 

that the EU Commission heard all 

of our arguments and lowered the 

duty from 58.8% to 36.1%.” 

BRAND Addition has acquired 

the entire share capital of Spark 

Promotions (Ireland) Limited and 

its UK subsidiary Spark Promotions 

(UK) Limited. 

Commenting on the transaction, 

Chris Lee, CEO of Brand 

Addition said: “Ciaran Doran and 

Brian Flanagan have built up an 

excellent business over the last 12 

years. We are looking forward to 

working with the first-class team 

at Spark to further develop the 

services offered to their current 

and potential customers under 

the Brand Addition infrastructure.” 

UNTIL the end of this month, 

BTC activewear is running a prize 

draw to win a Stormtech display 

stand and samples worth more 

than £1,000. To enter, customers 

need to simply place an order for 

Stormtech products of £500 or 

more online. 

BTC activewear also recently 

held a competition to promote its 

new updated mobile app. 

Everyone who downloaded the 

app between January and March 

were entered into a prize draw to 

win an Apple iPad. 

The lucky winner was Paul Tallett

PPD has been advised that 

Maidenhead-based distributor 

Buyking Ltd, which trades as We 

Brand It, has approached creditors 

with a view to entering into 

a Creditors Voluntary Arrangement 

(CVA). As we went to press, 

a creditors’ meeting was due to 

take place at 11am on June 11 at 

81 Station Road, Marlow SL7 1NS, 

the offices of the nominees, RSM 

Tenon Recovery.

Big names make pledge 

on safety after tragedy 

IN THE wake of the Bangladesh 

clothing factory collapse, 

a number of big retail 

names have signed up to 

stricter controls on workplace 

safety in the country. 

Benetton, Tesco and Primark 

have all signed up to the new 

provisions in the wake of the 

Rana Plaza tragedy, which killed 

around 1,100 people. 

The five-year, legally binding 

factory safety contract will require 

the firms to hold independent 

safety inspections, make the 

results of the inspections public, 

and to cover the costs for any repairs 

needed. 

It also calls for the firms to pay 

up to $500,000 to support safer 

factories, to stop doing business 

with any factory that refuses to 

make safety upgrades and to allow 

workers and their unions to 

have a voice in factory safety. 

Two notable hold-outs on the 

deal are Walmart and Gap. 

The two clothing giants say 

they are working on their own, independent 

safety plan. 

However, it’s likely that any 

agreement that comes out of 

these discussions will not be legally 

binding, since Gap cited the 

binding nature of the other plan 

as the primary reason it refused to 

participate. 

The search for survivors at 

Rana Plaza has now been called 

off – although there was one last 

miracle when a 19-year-old was 

pulled alive from the rubble after 

being trapped for 17 days. 

The momentum towards signing 

the new safety deal began 

when H&M, the largest clothing 

buyer in Bangladesh, said it 

would sign. 

C&A of the Netherlands, British 

retailers Tesco and Primark, and 

Zara followed. 

Benetton then followed suit. It 

had originally denied any links 

with the building – despite its labels 

and paperwork being found 

in the debris. 

Primark responded quickly to 

the disaster. It confirmed that 

one of its suppliers was located in 

the complex and then went even 

further by releasing a statement 

saying that it had “partnered with 

a local NGO to address the immediate 

needs of victims, including 

the provision of emergency food 

aid to families”.

‘Government must 

take part of blame’ 

THE BLAME for the Rana Plaza 

tragedy cannot be laid solely at 

the door of big retail names, the 

boss of promotional clothing firm 

Mantis World has said. 

Writing on the company’s blog, 

Prama Bhardwaj said: “The reason 

why a disaster like Rana Plaza 

can happen comes down, in 

my opinion, to the failure of the 

government to implement and 

enforce its own laws.” 

Bhardwaj added: “Believe me, I 

am no fan of the fast, cheap fashion 

model of the brands implicated 

such as Primark and Walmart. 

“And it is all too tempting to lay 

the blame at their door – especially 

when Primark and Canadian 

retailer Loblaw have announced 

they will accept responsibility for 

the welfare of the workers and 

duly compensating the families of 

the victims. 

“However, the question that is 

running uncomfortably through 

my mind is: ‘How far do buyers 

need to go to ensure the local laws 

are being followed’ 

“Codes of conduct, independent 

audits, compliance – all 

these things are there to uphold a 

buyer’s core values. 

“These core values should, 

surely, include ensuring workers 

have a safe and healthy working 

environment 

Bhardwaj added that Mantis 

World was taking its own steps 

to ensure those producing its 

clothes were kept safe. 

“We are speaking to all the 

certifiers we use to ascertain the 

extent to which building safety is 

included.” 

But he pointed to the influence 

of the factory owners with the 

Bangladeshi government as being 

at the heart of the problem. 

“The garment sector is massive 

in Bangladesh. It contributes over 

$20 billion dollars of export earnings 

annually. 

“However, the industry’s size 

and power has no doubt influenced 

government. Powerful factory 

owners are now members of 

parliament and sit in government. 

“The impunity with which 

powerful industry can act is not 

unique to Bangladesh. 

“All over the developing world 

health and safety is easily compromised 

when a well-placed 

backhander saves businesses a lot 

of time and money. 

“So far, [Bangladesh] factory 

owners have managed to get away 

scot-free when poor safety standards 

have led to death and injury 

in workers. 

“We fervently hope the terrible 

tragedy at Rana Plaza is going to 

finally galvanise some action.” 

‘You want to 

sleep at night’ 

T-SHIRT giant Gildan came 

to Bangladesh for the same 

reasons as many others – 

duty-free access to rich countries, 

cheap electricity and 

labour. 

But the Montreal-based 

company drew the line on 

cost-cutting when it acquired 

a factory three years ago in Savar, 

in that same swampland 

suburb to the north of the capital 

Dhaka where the doomed 

Rana Plaza stood. 

Instead of closing its eyes to 

the hazards of the manufacturing 

facility it had just bought, 

Gildan set out to make it a safe 

working place. 

“You want to make sure you 

can sleep at night,” said Glenn 

Chamandy, Gildan’s president 

and chief executive officer. 

Gildan is not bashful when 

it comes to cutting costs but 

even so, its co-founder had 

some legitimate reasons for 

concern. 

The businessmen from 

whom Gildan bought Shahriyar 

Fabric Industries for 

$15-million (U.S.) had previously 

owned Spectrum Garments. 

That sweater factory 

collapsed on itself in 2005, 

leaving 64 workers dead and 80 

injured. 

Built in 2009, the Shahriyar 

facility was almost new when 

Gildan executives first visited 

it. But even so, there were glaring 

hazards in the manufacturer’s 

two buildings, where 2,000 

employees work. 

The main building, five storeys 

high, had no fire escapes. 

It had only a central staircase, 

and employees walked up and 

down with bundles of garments 

on their heads as there 

was no industrial elevator. 

Gildan added fire escapes, 

an elevator and a water-treatment 

system. It also hired U.S.- 

based ABS Consulting to closely 

inspect the buildings. That 

analysis determined that the 

structures needed to be reinforced, 

at a cost of close to one 

million dollars. 

Charmandy recalls: “It is 

very easy for manufacturers 

not to follow the rules but we 

wanted to set the standards 

higher.”

New Expo East is a 

big hit with visitors 

THE FIRST Expo East opened 

its doors at the Convention 

Center in Atlantic City, New 

Jersey, drawing distributors 

from across the region and 

as far away as Canada and 

Washington state to see the 

thousands of products on 

display. 

The show, which replaced the 

long-running Promotions East, is 

the result of a strategic alliance, 

announced last year, between 

PPAI and the Specialty Advertising 

Association of Greater New 

York (SAAGNY). 

“We met all of our goals for the 

first year of this transition,” says 

PPAI President and CEO Paul Bellantone, 

CAE. “We grew the show, 

and both suppliers and distributors 

we spoke with were happy 

with the new direction.” 

Aiming to broaden the reach 

of Expo East, PPAI marketed the 

show outside the former show’s 

audience. 

Bellantone added: “While final 

numbers aren’t in yet, we believe 

we had the right numbers and the 

right quality of distributor attendee. 

Our goal all along was to reach 

PPAI member and industry companies 

that traditionally haven’t 

attended a PPAI show. 

“We believe we’ve done that 

and at the same time, we have 

given SAAGNY the opportunity to 

focus their energies on delivering 

great member value.” 

The show also offered nearly 

two dozen education workshops. 

Direct line 

for Italians 

FOLLOWING parting company 

with its Italian agent Brand To Be 

in the wake of its deal with SPS 

and Elasto-Form (see p5 of this 

edition), Giving Europe has announced 

that it will now be selling 

directly to that country’s market. 

Giving Europe terminated its 

contract with the agent, formerly 

known as Giving Europe Italia, after 

five years. 

Giving Europe says its new direct 

approach has distinct advantages 

for Italian distributors. 

Michele Tantimonaco, Giving 

Europe’s new sales manager for 

Italy, said: “Giving Europe is a dynamic 

organization, not focused 

on a short-term sale but valuing 

long term partnership with distributors. 

“Giving has an extensive international 

assortment, large colour 

variations for articles, a catalogue 

with atmosphere, and is intensively 

involved in general market 

trends and interests. All these 

things I find very appealing. 

“Another large and relevant 

benefit for the Italian distributor 

is that within this new situation, 

we can work on a new price strategy, 

making us a more attractive 

party for business.” 

At the same time, Giving Europe 

is investing in the growth of 

South European markets. A new 

office will be opened in Barcelona 

before summer.

SINGAPORE’S enterprise 

agency SPRING is cracking down 

on unsafe children’s products in 

its market surveillance. 

More than 600 children’s products 

from major and small retailers 

across Singapore have 

been sent for testing to ascertain 

whether they conform to applicable 

safety requirements. 

To date, a total of 120 “stop 

sale” notices have been issued to 

companies whose products were 

found to be unsafe. 

It’s thought the crackdown 

could have implications for the 

country’s promotional market, 

as SPRING plans to significantly 

widen the range of products 

under surveillance. 

INNERWORKINGS, a leading 

American global marketing supply 

chain company, has struck a 

new print management agreement 

with Young & Rubicam Mexico. 

The agreement is intended to 

achieve significant cost savings

Showcase is a sure-fire hit 

with Impamark’s visitors 

ESSEX-BASED distributor Impamark 

held its second promotional 

merchandise show 

recently at The Marks Tey Hotel, 

Colchester. 

The show was attended by more 

than 70 clients and prospects and supported 

by 26 suppliers from across the 

UK. 

Managing Director Nicky Crisp told 

PPD: “We have had a phenomenal 

attendance to this year’s showcase – it 

generated a lot of excitement with both 

our customers and our suppliers. 

“The showcase was a great opportunity 

for our clients to see the latest 

products and new ideas in the market. 

We have received a huge amount of inquiries 

from it and are working round 

the clock to get these out ASAP!” 

During the lunchtime break, attendees 

listened to presentations by two 

guest speakers, Donata Rio from PR 

company Voice Communications, and 

Gordon Glenister from the bpma. 

The free draw to win two nights’ 

accommodation at the Marks Tey Hotel 

was won by Jenny Cook from Bird 

Luckin Accountants. 

Feedback was uniformly positive, 

with one visitor observing: ““The day 

was very enjoyable and I found all of 

your suppliers very helpful, pleasant 

and informative. The venue was excellent 

and the catering was delicious.” 

Crisp added: “We will definitely repeat 

this day for our clients. It gives us 

an opportunity to showcase our company 

in a relaxed and informal environment. 

“The whole day had a great buzz and 

we are already seeing additional sales

Senator MD moves 

to Chairman’s role 

SENATOR’S Managing Director 

Michael Nick is moving 

to its supervisory board as 

Chairman. 

Michael is also a shareholder 

and joint MD of Senator 

parent Merz Holding, and is a 

great-grandson of Friedrich Merz, 

founder of the Merz Group. 

He has been MD of Senator 

since 2007, having been previously 

with Merz’s pharmaceutical 

business. 

A spokesman for the company 

told PPD: “Michael’s move from 

the operative business to the supervisory 

board has been long 

planned, and the timing of the 

move carefully chosen. 

“The strategic course for sustainable 

business expansion has 

been set in the Senator Group and 

is well under way.” 

Michael will remain as Senator 

MD until a successor is found. 

PROMOTIONAL merchandise 

specialist Orb Group has 

recruited Rod Mountford, 

pictured, to head up its new 

Australian division. 

Rod, who will take on the 

role of Division Director, is 

no stranger to promotional 

merchandise with a 17-year 

career in the industry. His 

previous experience includes 

being Managing Director of an Australian promotional 

merchandise agency, where he developed a 

wealth of expertise including efficient supply chain 

procurement and working with charities. 

Rod will spend his time developing Orb Group’s 

market share in Australia and will manage Far East 

sourcing. He told PPD: “Setting up the group’s Australian 

division will be an exciting challenge that I 

look forward to implementing. 

“I am confident that with the expertise and knowledge 

I have relating to both the promotional merchandise 

industry and the Australian market, Orb 

Group will be set to make a big impression.” 

The spokesman added: “With 

his move to the supervisory 

board, Michael is taking account 

of the difficulty in balancing the 

time required for his duties as 

Managing Director of both the 

holding company and Senator. 

“In addition, this implements a 

decision taken by the shareholders 

stipulating that shareholders 

should no longer be operationally 

involved in the company. 

“Michael will continue to represent 

the interests of Merz Group 

shareholders, together with three 

other shareholders, as Joint Managing 

Director of Merz Holding. 

He will be responsible for Senator 

here, ensuring continuity.”

Darmstadt, said Senator would 

remain an “integral part” of the 

Merz Group. 

“With substantial investment 

in the production facility and further

A passion for detail – and 

dedication to customers 

MEINHARD Mombauer, the 

MD of LM Accessoires, makes 

sure he walks through the 

office and warehouse every 

morning. 

“I need to know what my colleagues 

have on their mind, what 

they need, what bothers them and 

where there are problems,” says 

Mombauer. 

“We need to be there for the 

customers and that requires more 

than supplying nice products and 

coming up with new ideas and 

innovations in technology and 

development. 

“In particular, we need loyal 

and good members of staff with 

a team spirit who are willing to 

go the extra mile. We have a team 

that carries LM Accessoires and 

makes things happen. That makes 

us what we are.” 

In 2003, LM moved to larger 

premises in Cologne-Marsdorf in 

order to meet growing demand. 

Mombauer says: “A significantly 

larger warehouse capacity 

and an efficient organisation of 

the various departments makes 

it possible to offer an improved 

service. 

“This is, for us, the benchmark 

to which we measure a well-functioning 

company and has taken 

many years of planning and discussing.” 

Mombauer founded LM Accessoires 

in 1988 when he was a student, 

together with partner Kai 

Lühr. The pair started by selling 

tie clips – acquired from a manufacturer 

from Hamburg – to insurance 

companies. 

But both students aimed higher 

and were looking for ways to 

make their business more attractive. 

Now formally known as LM 

Modevertrieb Gbr (LM Fashion 

Co), the company struck a deal 

with a small dental lab to create a 

collection of tie clips. 

With the arrival in the business 

of Peter Hohmann, an expererienced 

goldsmith, the company 

got in touch with a large moulding 

company. 

The operation grew and LM 

Modevertrieb started to offer tie 

clips with precious stones. 

When Kai Lühr eventually 

wanted to spend more time on 

his studies (and use his home 

for what it was meant for!), LM 

Modevertrieb moved into proper 

business premises. 

What had started as a business 

on the side had now developed 

into a full-time job and Lühr & 

Mombauer Modevertrieb became 

LM Accessoires GmbH.

Below, from how it all began – two students selling tie clips – to the company’s current headquarters. 

The product portfolio was extended, 

with key-rings, jewellery 

pins and metal pins. 

Mombauer himself came to 

something of a personal crossroads 

when he found he no longer 

had time to combine his studies 

with running the business. 

As a result, the company was 

sold, with Mombauer returning as 

an employee and general manager 

for a short period. 

However, Mombauer’s passion 

for the company won the battle 

– he abandoned his studies and 

bought the business back. 

The company moved to larger 

premises in the Vogelsanger 

Strasse a short time afterwards. 

In 1994, Mombauer decided to 

extend the company’s range with 

trendy metal products. 

Four years later, the Reflects 

brand and its associated catalogue 

were introduced. 

Nowadays catalogues, flyers, 

e-mails and online media are 

offered in five languages, with a 

range of some 1,500 products. 

These include both bespoke 

products and high quality designer 

items, as well as a wide range 

of promotional favourites such as 

lanyards, watches and pins. 

LM Accessoires pays special

The company also has its own 

goldsmith, allowing gifts to be 

made in precious metal (and 

smaller quantities) for those really

In-house design is part of the 

product portfolio as well as, according 

to Mombauer, “some 

products which are not available 

as we would like them – so we 

make them ourselves”. 

Mombauer told PPD: “We like 

to translate ideas into real products. 

In the end, the result is always 

something exceptional and 

special. The experience we gain 

with this process is being invested 

in development. The success 

we have with these products confirms 

our efforts.” 

In 2009, LM Accessoires opened 

an office in the UK. 

Mombauer says: “The UK had 

become one of our most successful 

export markets and we intend 

to be as close to the UK and Irish 

customers as possible. 

“We are a company that operates 

all over Europe and the UK, 

being one of the larger markets in 

Europe, was an obvious choice in 

which to establish an office.” 

LM Accessoires UK Ltd is headed 

up by Thomas van Riessen. 

He told PPD: “We are able to 

combine the best of both worlds 

by giving a local service with the 

back-up of a large, experienced 

and well-oiled machine“. 

LM Accessoires now employs 

a total of 100 people, selling exclusively 

to trade customers 

throughout Europe, and at the beginning 

of this year, it celebrated 

its 25th birthday. 

Mombauer added: “Like any 

other 25-year-old, we can say 

that we are mature now – but we 

are still curious about what is to 

come, and full of ideas and desire 

to achieve more!”

HEALTH and safety in the 

workplace is not my area 

of expertise by any stretch 

of the imagination, and it’s 

viewed as a complex and – at 

times – controversial area. 

The sheer number of laws governing 

different trades in multiple 

regions of countries across the 

globe make it impossible for any 

one person to know everything 

there is to know. However, there is 

one minimum standard every law 

and every landlord should be able 

to achieve if they prioritise it over 

profit; the safety of its workers. 

The factory collapse in Bangladesh 

is a shocking example of 

what really can and does happen 

when premises are not maintained 

and exit routes are not accessible. 

When landlords choose not to 

(or cannot afford to) keep staff 

safe, then the authorities must 

step in. 

Furthermore, it’s essential that 

clients paying for and commissioning 

work from these premises 

do not stand by as the situation 

unfolds. 

This terrible disaster has been 

covered a lot recently – not only 

due to its sheer scale, but also 

because it brings to our attention 

how many other hundreds of 

buildings are on the verge of collapse 

or burning down while exits 

remain blocked or locked. 

Ethical audits are not simply 

box-ticking exercises; they can, 

and do, save lives. 

Getting audits for clients that 

insist on them should not be seen 

as a chore, as is often the case; 

rather, they must be celebrated 

for insisting on these documents. 

I know that many companies 

are now doing this to cover their 

backs, as they want to avoid being 

sued or being lambasted in the 

media for buying these products. 

But it isn’t all negative. Some 

actually do care, but it appears 

to be a box-ticking exercise for all 

of us because that’s the point at

which most of us are involved. 

Behind the scenes, however, 

these audits check the very basics; 

the essentials that we take for 

granted, or see as the obvious or 

minimum requirement. 

Insisting that workplaces and 

dormitories are not overcrowded 

is not about giving workers a nice 

environment to work or sleep in. 

These audits are essential but 

for factories to have representatives, 

and to have large enough 

dormitories or more fire escapes, 

costs money. 

If budgets are that tight, then 

marketers should be encouraged 

to focus more specifically on how 

many people receive a T-shirt or 

bag and spend the same amount 

but on fewer items, with the 

knowledge and confirmation that 

have been safely produced. 

If factories are scrimping on 

safety, then they will certainly 

also be making savings on fabrics, 

dyes, inks etc and the safety of the 

consumer then comes into play. 

By focusing on value so heavily, 

this industry has already set a 

dangerous direction for the future. 

Nearly everything these days 

is sold on its price point and 

that will exacerbate the issues 

faced by producers in developing 

countries.

Obstacles to the rise of 

Glass clear for all to see

THE public availability of 

Google’s Glass technology 

is coming ever closer, with 

around 1,000 people already 

beta-testing the device, as 

well as it being made available 

to selected journalists 

for test. 

For those of you who have been 

living under a rock for the last five 

years, Google Glass is a wearable 

specs-like device which features a 

small heads-up display above the 

right eye which can be voice-controlled 

to take pictures, shoot video, 

surf the web, find friends, send 

tweets, and much more. 

Glass is already causing concerns 

on the privacy front, because 

it can record video and images 

far less conspicuously than a 

handheld device and could make 

it difficult for people to know 

when they are on camera. 

Some shops in New York already 

have signs up requesting 

Glass users to remove the device, 

while Google itself has issued a 

timely warning not to wear Glass 

on a visit to the toilet. 

Meanwhile, members of the US 

Congress have written to Google 

CEO Larry Page asking what steps 

the company is taking to protect 

the privacy of non-users. 

One thing’s for sure, there’s a 

huge amount of hype and hot air 

around this technology. 

So, are we looking at a device 

which will revolutionise every 

moment of our everyday existence 

– or a white elephant on a 

par with the Segway or, dare we 

mention, the Sinclair C5 

I’m not usually one to bet 

against Google but for me, there’s 

one potentially huge obstacle to 

Glass’s general acceptance. 

It’s not privacy. It’s not copyright. 

It’s the human capacity to 

be embarrassed. 

Glass relies on voice control 

to do anything useful. To wake it 

up, you tap the side of the device 

and preface a command with the 

words, “OK, Glass...” 

The problem is, most of us hate 

talking to machines. Oh sure, we’ll 

do so if unavoidable, like those 

horrendous voice recognition systems 

you increasingly run into at 

call centres. 

But we largely put up with such 

situations in fairly private settings. 

You can spot the difference 

with bluetooth phone headsets. 

Most of us will use them as a safe 

option for receiving calls while 

driving, but when we’re out and 

about in public with our phone, 

most of us leave the headset in the 

car and put the headset to our ear. 

Why Because it looks either 

nerdy or psychotic to be seen apparently 

talking to oneself. 

It’s the same with the iPhone’s 

much-heralded voice assistant, 

Siri. Despite all the whizz-bang 

demos at the Apple launches, if 

I want to send a text message in 

polite company (or even on my 

own), I still use my fingers to jab 

through to the appropriate page 

on my phone. 

The sad truth is, much as we 

always secretly wanted the days 

of having a spoken conversation 

with our computer to arrive, the 

endless episodes of Star Trek have 

made its advent and use a badge 

of utmost nerdiness. Honestly, if I 

was to start talking to Siri on a daily 

basis, I might as well stop using 

deodorant. 

And there’s the problem with 

Glass. Actually, it’s even worse. 

Not only do you have to talk to it, 

but your eye has to look up at the 

screen, so the temptation to interrupt 

social engagement and look 

at the internet – already looming 

large with that smartphone ever 

ready in your pocket – will be even 

worse. 

Google has already put out a 

jokey advice video warning users 

not to be a “Glasshole”. Unfortunately, 

I suspect it’s a label even 

the most decorous wearers of 

Glass are unlikely to escape. 

In contact with security 

IF YOU’VE had your debit or credit 

card renewed recently, chances 

are it’s got that little “wi-fi” symbol 

on it revealing that it’s ready 

for contactless transactions. 

Instead of pushing your card 

into a point-of-sale device and 

tapping in your PIN, you just 

place the card within a few inches 

of the machine and the transaction 

happens automatically without 

further interaction. 

Obviously, without the security 

of a PIN, there is a limit placed on 

the value of such individual transactions, 

which this month in the 

UK will rise to £20. 

So far, so good, you might think. 

The contactless technology is primarily 

designed to make card 

payments quicker and reduce the 

queue in McDonald’s when the 

guy in front of you insists on paying 

for his Big Mac with his chip 

and PIN. 

However, there are fears that 

criminals could construct devices 

that would be able to read cards 

inside someone’s wallet. 

And here’s where the latest bit 

of promo ingeniousness comes 

in. 

UK-based Gizmo Promotions 

is offering the VoyagerBlue, a 

patented, simple, fully brandable 

card which when placed next to 

your contactless card (or in your 

e-passport, for that matter) blocks 

accidental or fraudulent scanning 

attempts, making your data more 

secure. 

Of course, if you were wearing 

Google Glass, you might be able 

to take a picture of the would-be 

thief too...

Tower provides backdrop 

for an Outstanding show 

THE TOWER of London provided the 

spectacular backdrop for Outstanding 

Branding’s first end user promotional 

products show in May. 

The show at the New Armouries played 

host to more than 30 suppliers, three guest 

speakers and more than 120 attending merchandise 

buyers. 

Outstanding Branding Sales Director 

Andy Thorne told PPD: “A lot of hard work 

and preparation went into the day, so we 

were thrilled with the high turnout and fantastic 

feedback. 

“We couldn’t have asked for a better day, 

and with over 300 quality quotes to follow 

up on.” 

Among the speakers was Adam Corbally, 

known to many from his appearance in the 

BBC show The Apprentice. 

Adam entertained the visitors and suppliers 

with a lively speech on the perils of 

printing products, as he experienced firsthand 

on one of the show’s tasks. 

Adam said: “I was honoured to have been 

asked to speak by Outstanding Branding at 

such a grand venue as the Tower of London. 

“The day had a great atmosphere and 

loads of energy; a great experience for everyone 

I spoke to – and what a fantastic way 

to network whilst taking in the tour of the 

Tower.” 

Also speaking at the show was the bpma’s 

Gordon Glenister, who said: “What a great 

event! Outstanding Branding did an excellent 

job in bringing together an array of 

suppliers to showcase some great promotional 

products. 

“I spoke to some visitors who really were 

amazed at what’s possible with promotional 

merchandise. 

“The venue at the Tower created a great 

backdrop particularly for those that hadn’t 

been for a while, or even at all.” 

The other speaker was acclaimed author 

Scott Addington, who told his audience 

how a pair of promotional headphones 

created $1 million of qualified sales leads 

and $250,000 of sales. 

The show’s visitors were extremely enthusiastic. 

One said: “It was really useful to 

see so many promo items in one place and 

have the opportunity to discuss options direct 

with the suppliers.” 

Suppliers also found the day worthwhile. 

Dorian Tranter of Toppoint commented: 

“Great event – by far the best one I have 

ever been to and by far the best contacts.” 

Outstanding Branding’s MD Sarah Penn 

added: “We just want to thank our fantastic 

suppliers. We know we have nothing 

without the commitment and support of 

our supply chain, so we can’t thank them 

enough for everything they put in.” 

The night before the show, the suppliers 

were treated to The Outstanding Supplier 

Supper (#TOSS) at The Bowler Pub in Farringdon. 

Sarah joked: “We just wanted to show our 

appreciation by making sure they all had 

hangovers for the day itself!”

Salute to unsung heroes 

who power our industry 

ONE GREAT thing about the 

new monthly cycle for PPD 

is not only has it made the 

magazine more current and 

allowed us more space for 

pictorials and features, it also 

means that with one issue 

following hot on the heels of 

another, we have the opportunity 

with important stories 

for follow-ups while the topics 

are still hot. 

Such is the case with the current 

issue – the terrible tragedy in 

Dhaka still stirring the world. The 

timing of our “Futures” feature 

on 3D printing was amazing, too 

– landing on desks just as the furore 

about printing real guns shot 

quite literally to the front pages. 

The extra work involved in 

putting together the additional 

issues, and the switch over from 

bi-monthly to monthly, has been 

challenging and we are expanding 

the brilliant PPD team to cope. 

Speaking of brilliant teams, you 

will all know a few of the Trade 

Only and PPD team – me, Vicky, 

Gail, Andy, Aidan and Kath, for 

instance. 

But backing us up is a great 

team of people, of whom we are 

all very proud – the glue that 

holds Trade Only together, be they 

internal sales, marketing, credit 

control, administrators, help 

desk, programmers or customer 

services. 

They are the people that make 

up what is, to my mind, the best 

team in the industry. 

I want to highlight the three 

people in the picture here – Phil 

Quigley, Sonia Hine and Stuart 

Bridgett. 

These three make up the Trade 

Only design team, headed by 

Phil. They are responsible for designing 

and putting together the 

Spectrum and Envoy catalogues, 

amongst other things. 

In fact, if you were at the recent 

Envoy launch, you may have 

noticed Phil and Sonia, suitably 

adorned in their 80s shellsuits!

ance at the Trade Only National 

Show, with Sonia acting as Hall 3

in front of their Macs and thrust 

into the harsh, cold world of the 

Ricoh Arena. And a great job they 

do, too. 

Time and again, I discuss a 

brief with them and what I get 

back far and away exceeds even 

my very demanding expectations 

and gives me a real thrill. This is 

what prompted me to write this... 

We had a design team conference 

call the other Wednesday to 

discuss something new I wanted 

for the show (sorry, not telling – 

secret squirrel – you’ll have to wait 

until January to find out, when 

you get to the show). 

It was quite a lengthy discussion 

and the expectation after it 

was of a further conversation and 

drawing something up the next 

time I was in the office. 

Not so. Friday morning’s post 

brought me a full-scale printed 

and hand-made mock-up – and 

not of what we had discussed exactly; 

something that was even 

better. It blew me away, so thank 

you, guys! 

We should all recognise the 

contribution of staff (individuals 

or teams) who provide the vital 

behind-the-scenes work, people 

who do not fill direct customer-facing 

roles. 

We all have people within our 

organisations without whose 

committed efforts and vital support 

we would not be able to deliver 

the high quality and standards 

we need to run our businesses. 

Their rich mix of skills keeps 

the cogs turning. Often, the hard 

work of these staff goes unnoticed 

– a fact that actually points to how 

well they are doing their job – perhaps 

being taken for granted 

Behind the scenes in this industry 

are hundreds of unsung 

heroes; people like Phil, Sonia 

and Stuart, working hard day in, 

day out, delivering excellence. 

The promotional products industry 

should take pride in the great 

people we have and the high standards 

they deliver. 

It is important that we recognise 

the vital role played by these 

unsung heroes who quietly go 

about their incredibly important 

work, and I think it’s only right 

that we record their contribution 

to our businesses and to our great 

industry.

retrospective. I always admired 

Michael Jordan, more so after I 

heard him as being quoted saying: 

“I fail every day of my life, and 

that’s what makes me great.” Jordan 

accepts that he fails, and fails 

often, but he learns from each 

of those mistakes and builds on 

those failures for the betterment 

of his game. 

Repeat: After doing all of 

things, and perhaps falling down, 

missing a point, not getting a deal. 

You get up, look back, dig down 

and intensify that desire, prepare, 

practice, hone your performance, 

review, be open and accountable 

– and then do it over again. 

Bringing your “A” game is a process. 

You must want it. 

It comes from inside you – the 

desire to win, to exceed, to excel 

and to achieve. 

Before your next presentation, 

think about this – when you’re finished, 

what grade would you get 

You know – you feel it!

Adventurous nation that 

relishes risky business

NEW Zealand bills itself as 

the youngest country on 

earth and the vibrancy and 

energy which informs the 

Kiwi attitude gives some credence 

to that claim. 

This is a country which revels 

in the outdoor lifestyle - and using 

its scenery to provide ultimate 

thrills. This is, after all, the birthplace 

of bungy-jumping. 

It’s also a country which is immensely 

proud of its heritage (and 

whose treatment of its indigenous 

peoples compares favourably to 

Australia’s somewhat ambivalent 

relationship with the aborigines). 

Consisting of North and South 

islands, there is a dramatic contrast 

between the more populous 

north and the rugged landscapes 

of the south. 

North Island is where most 

tourists will start. At first glance 

Auckland, the nation’s biggest 

city, could be any other metropolis 

on the planet. It has the same 

skyscrapers, multi-national presences 

and brands. 

But stay a while and its subtleties 

reveal themselves bit by bit. 

There’s a feeling of spaciousness 

you don’t usually find in a city. 

The best place to get an overview 

of Auckland is from the 

top of the Sky Tower, the tallest 

free-standing structure in the 

southern hemisphere. 

If you’re feeling very brave, you 

can look through (and step on) the 

glass bricks which dot the floor of 

the upper platform. They’re built 

to withstand the weight of an elephant, 

apparently, though that 

might not be a comfort if you’re 

not good with heights. 

If you feel in need of a rest after 

that excitement, go down to 

the Sky Tower’s cafe level, where 

you’ll be entertained by bodies 

flying past the window. This is the 

Sky Jump, a sort of cross between 

bungy and base-jumping. 

Cables control the descent rate 

of the jumpers and at the same 

time prevent them from being 

blown into the side of the tower 

by crosswinds. 

For something a little tamer, 

though still as entertaining, try 

Kelly Tarlton’s Underwater World. 

This aquarium in the Mission Bay 

suburb is built in a set of former 

sewage storage tanks, which now 

house thousands of fish. 

But you’ll never see the real 

New Zealand if you stay in the 

cities. The Bay of Plenty region,

just south of Auckland, has great 

charm with its rolling coastline 

and easy-going seaside settlements. 

It’s also where you’ll find the 

most dramatic examples of geothermal 

activity - something New 

Zealand is noted for. 

Around the Rotorua region, 

you’ll find plenty of opportunities 

to gawp at geysers and watch boiling-hot 

mud bubble pensively. 

The geothermal goings-on 

have also led to a burgeoning spa 

industry in the Rotorua area. 

It’s also here that you’ll find 

some of the best examples of New 

Zealand’s Maori heritage, particularly 

at the Tamaki village, where 

you’ll be greeted with the “hongi” 

- the traditional Maori greeting of 

touching noses. 

While you’re in the Rotorua 

area, you’ll want to go to the New 

Zealand Agrodome to have a look 

at New Zealand’s most famous export 

– sheep. 

Three times daily, the Agrodome 

hosts the bizarre but fascinating 

Sheep Show, which 

features a “beauty parade” of 19 

different sheep breeds, as well as 

a shearing demonstration. 

You can also tour the organic 

farm and the more energetic can 

sample yet another Kiwi extreme 

sport. Zorbing involves climbing 

inside a huge transparent sphere 

and being pushed downhill. 

You can have a “dry zorb”, where 

you’re strapped in for the experience, 

or for the more adventurous 

(or mad) how about a “wet 

zorb”, where you’re left to bounce 

around inside the sphere with a 

couple of bucketfuls of water for 

company 

If you’ve ever wondered what it 

would be like to climb inside your 

washing machine, this is the place 

to find out. 

Among New Zealand’s most 

notable exports are its impressive 

wines, and one of the best areas 

for sampling it at its origin is the 

Hawkes Bay region on North Island. 

It also boasts one of the sunniest 

climates in this temperate 

region, with 220 sunshine days 

per year. 

Auckland may be the biggest 

city in New Zealand, but its capital 

is Wellington, looking out on 

the Cook Strait, which divides it 

from the wilder south. 

Wellington is known for its 

windy weather, so come prepared. 

It’s also blessed with a harbour 

setting perhaps only exceeded by 

Sydney for its beauty. 

If you only do one thing in Wellington, 

drive or get a bus to the 

summit of Mount Victoria and 

look down on the spectacular harbour 

view.

MOTORING 

Supercar credentials at a 

price that seems sensible

ONCE, it was bedroom posters 

– now, you can tell from 

its appearance in a plethora 

of computer games that Nissan’s 

GT-R is a true motoring 

icon. 

As one of the fastest road-legal 

cars in the world (with aggressively 

sporting good looks to go with 

it), it’s a young boy’s dream. And 

an old boy’s, come to that. 

Its 3.8 litre, twin turbocharged 

engine accelerates from a standstill 

to 60mph in a push-youback-in-the-seat 

three seconds 

and on to a maximum of 196mph. 

What’s more, its electronically-controlled 

four wheel drive system, 

sports suspension and aerodynamics 

give it a level of grip to 

make a limpet jealous. 

That sort of performance puts it 

well into supercar territory, yet at 

£76,160, its price isn’t. 

For another £10,000, you could 

add the track pack (uprated suspension 

and cooling) and have an 

“off the peg” race car. 

Apart from some styling and 

technological tweaks, the latest 

GT-R (the direct descendant of 

the legendary Skyline) has 550PS 

of power, up 20PS from its predecessor. 

And to prove its real life performance 

credentials (as opposed to 

straight line top speed), it lapped 

the Nurburgring in seven minutes 

and 27.22 seconds – beating 

two sporting flagship rivals, the 

Porsche Carerra GT and the Ferrari 

Enzo. 

The latest GT-R’s body is also 

stronger and stiffer, for improved 

handling. An example of the engineers’ 

attention to detail is the 

asymmetric suspension: it’s just 

a little stiffer on the right-hand 

side to take account of the driver’s 

weight. 

A perhaps surprising facet of 

the Nissan’s nature is that it isn’t 

a stripped out track machine 

– it’s a full four-seater with a decent-sized 

boot as well. 

And it’s a gadget guru’s dream, 

with everything from satnav to a 

race car’s performance monitoring 

system to record acceleration, 

steering and braking, amongst 

other things. 

But the GT-R isn’t perhaps everyone’s 

ideal car. 

The suspension is decidedly 

firm, as you’ll notice on the average 

British B-road, and there is 

a certain amount of mechanical 

noise. This shouldn’t be all that 

surprising for a car which is built 

to go fast and to handle safely and 

reliably at higher speeds. Stiff suspension 

and sturdy mechanical 

bits and pieces are essential. 

But to the enthusiast, they’re 

also part of the experience – you 

want to hear the right soundtrack 

rather than “Hits from the Shows”. 

It’s a constant reminder of what 

this car is, and why you chose it. 

Yes, it serves as a family transport 

but you know that under the sleek 

exterior, there’s a lurking beast, a 

brutal power just waiting to be released 

at your will. 

The beast in question is a 3.8 

litre V6 with twin turbochargers, 

with four-wheel drive to help you 

get the power down. 

As well as an extra 30PS or power, 

the 2012 car has more torque 

(a hefty 465lbs ft) yet it is also 

slightly more economical, with 

an official 24mpg average. The 

test car’s automatic transmission 

keeps the GT-R on a tight rein 

for normal road use, but use the 

throttle “kickdown” and the overtaking 

surge is instant and very 

effective. 

With a flick of the wrist, you can 

switch to manual mode, swapping 

cogs in milliseconds with the 

up and down paddles on either 

side of the steering wheel. 

The steering is nicely weighted 

and, of course, positive – but the 

power system gives you extra help 

at low speed to make light work of 

parking. 

The coupe styling doesn’t give 

the best view for this manoeuvre, 

but Nissan’s familiar rear view 

camera (with computerised lines 

predicting your path) removes 

any concerns. 

The GT-R comes with all the 

features you’d expect of an executive 

car such as climate control, 

electric windows and mirrors, 

cruise control and metallic paint.

I have three sons myself and I 

often wonder what are they going 

to do when they grow up. 

Getting a great qualification – 

degree or vocational – is now almost 

a minimum standard when 

looking for a job and industry experience 

is crucial to get a decent 

one. 

A few years ago, the bpma embarked 

on a relationship with 

Brunel University through our 

work with the bpma student design 

competition. 

This year, it’s my mission to try 

and encourage the promotional 

merchandise industry to take on 

some of these students as interns. 

Having seen first-hand the creative 

designs put forward by these 

young people and the confidence 

they show in their pitches, I think 

they could add some real value to 

many distributors and supplier 

businesses. Placements can take 

place over three, six, nine and

Another avenue to look into is

are feeling festive 

MOST of us are still dreaming 

of an elusive summer, but 

Balmoral Knitwear of Scotland

its Fruit Challenge competition, 

an opportunity for garment decorators 

to showcase their best work 

for a chance to win 5,000 euros for

The 2013 Fruit Challenge asks 

garment decorators to take the 

theme of “colours” to create a design 

on one of the brand’s Valueweight 

T-Shirts. 

The theme can be interpreted

Curtain up on 

new service 

after testing 

SCREENWORKS is launching 

a new bespoke service in July, 

having launched its Working in 

Partnership ethos in January at 

the Trade Only National Show. 

This newest service is an integral 

part of Screenworks’ plans to build 

partnerships for promotional merchandise 

distributors and gift houses 

in Europe. 

The new bespoke option is being 

overseen by Adam Proops, who 

joined Screenworks last October to 

focus solely on this service and related 

products. 

Although just 28, Adam already has 

a decade of related experience under 

his belt and, says Screenworks has 

“bespoke in his DNA”. 

Having found his niche early on in 

his career, Adam has worked through 

every related aspect of the bespoke 

arena from freight forwarding, import/export 

procedure, right thorough 

to promotional merchandising. 

He told PPD: “What I love about 

bespoke is that I handle different 

challenges every day, and often some 

really complex issues. 

“Through my unique experience 

and connections, I can guide my 

customers to the perfect solution for 

their exact brief. 

“It’s like putting that final piece in 

the jigsaw – nothing is more satisfying.” 

Adam is experienced enough to 

understand that there might be more 

than one solution to a bespoke challenge 

and drill down on the brief to 

really understand the issue and be 

able look at it from different perspectives. 

For example recently a client asked 

for 15,000 embroidered beach towels, 

specced to 350gsm Pantone-matched 

cotton. 

Crucially the customer needed the 

towels within seven to eight weeks, 

which ruled out European manufacture. 

Knowing that lead- time was incredibly 

tight, veering on the impossible, 

Adam explored the customer’s 

needs, asking what the towel was to 

actually be used for, and was able to 

suggest an alternative product. 

Adam recalled: “The resulting microfibre 

towels with heat-transferred 

logos were substantially less heavy 

than their cotton counterparts. 

“This meant we were able to 

cost-effectively air freight the lighter 

alternatives, meaning that the product 

arrived with its customer early 

for the event, met everyone’s requirements 

for a unique and memorable 

product and came in marginally below 

budget.” 

Gaining the benefit of markdown 

costs associated with volume production 

in the Far East and developing 

world can be fraught with complications 

for the uninitiated. 

There are many risks associated 

with shipping, proofing, production, 

meeting deadlines and managing the 

whole operation remotely, in a different 

language and culture. 

Due to the volume nature of the 

service mistakes could be extremely 

costly. 

Adam adds: “We have chosen our 

suppliers carefully and only contract 

with companies who conform to our 

rigorous manual of supplier specifications. 

“Managing the supply chain is key 

– supplier stipulations ensure that 

products are rigorously tested and 

similar quality management applies 

to our global supply chain as for UK 

manufacturing.” 

Last year, Screenworks’ UK production 

was SMETA-audited by Sedex 

and the company is working towards 

similar accreditation for its offshore 

projects. 

Screenworks Sales Director Matt 

Daines said: “Over the last eight 

months, we have designed, realised 

and tested every aspect of our bespoke 

service with a select group of 

clients, ensuring back end systems 

and quality controls are in place 

ready for our launch in July. 

“Everyone is very excited about it.”

to hold small detail.” 

The Braintree-based firm

Susan says the new material, 

available in 31 colours, has 

been extremely well-received. 

Susan added; “There are 

various ways a garment can 

be decorated. We produce 

transfers by using four processes 

– digital, screen and 

litho printing and Cad Cut 

types of fabrics and can also 

carry out at source any personalisation 

required. 

Minimum quantities tend 

to start at 1,000 items per colour 

per style, and lead times 

are normally 12 to 14 weeks 

by sea and eight to ten weeks 

by air. 

Samples are typically ready 

two to three weeks from receipt 

of the agreed specification.

Galpeg ‘on course for £1.25m’ 

GALPEG says the promotional 

merchandise distributors who 

have joined its associate programme 

are on course to generate 

a combined annual turnover in 

excess of £1.25 million by the end 

of 2013. 

The company launched its Associate 

programme last year to 

support new and existing promotional

Last month, I tried my best to 

put a positive spin on what we 

sometimes think of as stupid 

questions. 

Now, many of you thought 

I may have eaten some funny 

mushrooms or just been left alone 

with the family-size box of Sugar 

Puffs again, but no – I genuinely 

did want to find some positive, 

happy way to look at things. 

Well that’s all very nice up to 

a point – except it’s also just as 

easy to scream the most acceptable 

swear word that your office 

will allow, throw the nearest mug 

sample at the wall and declare 

that you are, well and truly, surrounded 

by complete and total 

muppets. 

I’m not going to sugar-coat this 

in any way – some of the people 

we are forced to deal with are just 

plain stupid. 

They open their mouths and 

you struggle to work out how they 

have enough functioning brain 

cells to remain upright for more 

than a second at a time. 

It’s not that they’re ignorant of 

our industry; it’s just that they’re 

ignorant, full stop. 

You want to help them, you really 

do, but these people are there 

to try the patience of a saint and 

surely no company in this industry 

is paying you enough of a salary 

to deal with these morons, are 

they 

But is this all just some mindless 

rant in order to exorcise my 

demons 

Well, yes, to a certain extent 

but actually, it’s all part of a much 

bigger plan, so please allow me to 

explain. Are you sitting comfortably

laughter as each of us share stories 

of the ridiculous things we are 

asked to do. 

Stupid questions from customers, 

unbelievable requests that 

would test the miracle-making 

skills of any religious figure, and 

news from suppliers that can only 

leave us thinking: “WTF” 

The point is that these are great 

stories, and I want to start collecting 

them. 

It’s time to turn this column interactive, 

so would you like to take

But it’s not magic – it’s science. 

China’s output remains in ascendancy 

MANUFACTURING in China got off to a strong 

start in 2013, according to a report released by 

quality control service provider AsiaInspection. 

In its Q1 Barometer, a quarterly synopsis 

of Asia-based manufacturing and the quality 

control services industry, AsiaInspection revealed 

that performed inspections in China 

have grown by more than 12.5%. 

Smaller manufacturing neighbors also saw 

significant growth – Vietnam and Thailand 

were both up 33% and Bangladesh by 15.6%. 

A spokesman for AsiaInspection said: “To 

put China’s sustained growth into perspective, 

when it surpassed the US in 2010 to become 

the world’s largest manufacturer, its output accounted 

for 23% of global manufacturing. 

“Fast-forward two years, and China has 

gained an additional 10% of total manufacturing 

share, with $2.9 trillion of the total $8.8 trillion 

global manufacturing output, putting its 

total value at 20% more than the US.” 

Talks of a return to American manufacturing 

may be premature, the spokesman added. 

“This January, Walmart committed to invest 

$50 billion in ‘Made in America’ products over 

the next 10 years, but the reality is that this 

only amounts to 0.93% of their total sales for 

the period.” 

AsiaInspection figures confirm that manufacturing 

outsourcing is still on the rise from 

the West – there was a 15% increase in inspections 

requested from North American customers 

year over year. 

Q1 performed inspection growth in China 

was strongest in food products at 212%, compared 

with Q1 2012, followed by industrial and 

mechanical items (+42%) and then body care 

products (+36%). This trend indicates China 

is branching out from traditional manufacturing: 

toys, textiles and electronics. 

The rise in food-related inspections is significant. 

While the “horsemeat scandal” raged in the 

West, costing high-profile retailers like Tesco 

millions in lost sales, China has been plagued 

with its own “pig dumping scandal”. 

To date, more than 16,000 dead and diseased 

pigs were found floating in the main 

source of Shanghai’s drinking water. 

The discovery exposed an unknown practice 

apparently common in China – underground 

traders buy up pigs that have died from disease 

and sell the pork illegally to food processing 

firms contracting with small importers and 

large retailers. 

Meanwhile, India started 2013 by announcing 

its target to grow from the world’s 

ninth-largest manufacturer to fifth largest by 

2022. 

To achieve this, India must increase its manufacturing 

GDP from 15% of the total to 25%. 

India’s long-term growth projection is reflected 

by AsiaInspection figures, showing 

43% year-over-year performed inspection 

growth from Q1 2012, with 52% growth in Q1 

2013 alone. 

Also experiencing gains in Q1 were Pakistan, 

up 21% from one year ago, and Malaysia, up 

7%.

For our supplier members, we 

are looking for new and exciting 

product images to go into the new 

product or the great design board. 

As we need to protect the channel, 

when the client clicks your 

image, it will take them directly 

to the quick quote board on the 

sourcing site, where an inquiry 

will be left for one of our distributor 

members to feed through. 

This is new and it will be developing 

(slowly) over the coming 

months, but please get engaged 

and help us build a wonderful

FUTURES 

Think thin and prepare to 

have your mind boggled!

WELL, looks like last month’s 

debut column hit the spot 

– some great feedback and 

also, how current was I 

The very week we published, 

as PPD was winging its way deskward, 

three stories from the US 

about 3D printing hit the headlines. 

For those not yet in the know, 

3D printing is seen by many as 

the future of manufacturing. The 

technology works by building up 

layer upon layer of material to 

build complex solid objects. 

No sooner had PPD gone to 

press when the world was shocked 

as the first gun made with a 3D 

printer was successfully fired. 

Around 100,000 blueprints of 

the design were downloaded over 

the internet before the source file 

was blocked. 

On a more positive note came 

the story of baby Kaiba from 

Ohio. He was dying from a lung 

obstruction called a bronchial 

malchia but was saved when doctors 

3D-printed and inserted an 

airway tube made from biological 

material. 

Finally, we we had the White 

House itself announcing that it is 

looking to 3D printing to revitalise 

US manufacturing with a $200 

million investment in the technology. 

Three centres are to be created 

to concentrate on energy generation, 

lightweight metals and materials 

for the military and (inevitably) 

“complex weapon system 

manufacturing”. 

Mind you, if you think 3D 

printing is exciting, watch out 

for 4D technology – where products 

are not only printed, but will 

also have the ability to self-assemble! 

Now that would be a real 

game-changer... 

Another product worthy of 

such a label is graphene, billed as 

“the miracle product of the 21st 

century”. 

I’m proud to say it’s a British 

discovery, by Manchester University 

academics Andre Geim and 

Konstantin Novoselov in 2005. 

The pair won the 2010 Nobel 

Prize for physics for isolating the 

material and measuring some of 

its astounding properties. 

Graphene’s discovery could 

spell the end for silicon and revolutionise 

the future development 

of computers and other electrical 

devices forever. It’s made from 

pure carbon and as the name suggests, 

it is more closely related to 

the soft and silky graphite we are 

all familiar with in our pencils 

rather than the hard crystal diamond. 

The key is that the atoms are 

engineered into a different configuration 

which makes it incredibly 

light, hundreds of times stronger 

than steel, and allows electrons 

to flow through it far faster than 

through the current chips in your 

computer. 

This combination of mechanical 

and electronic properties 

makes graphene ideal for development 

into many possible products. 

But it’s tricky to work with – 

sheets are just an atom thick and 

difficult to produce – three million 

layers of graphene measure 

about 1mm). 

Much work and research is currently 

under way on making the 

material easier to manufacture, 

manipulate and to connect to 

other materials. 

The race is on to economically 

mass-produce graphene and 

get it into products, with South 

Korean and Japanese companies 

and universities leading the way, 

backed by companies such as 

Samsung and IBM. 

Chancellor George Osborne recently 

outlined UK plans to boost 

development of this ”super-material”, 

as he called it. 

The Exchequer has made £21.5 

million available, with a further 

£14 million being put up by universities 

and interested companies. 

The first commercially available 

graphene-based product, the 

Siren Label, went into production 

in 2012. It’s a security smart tag 

which uses a graphene-based ink, 

dubbed Vor-ink. 

Fully integrated conductive circuits 

are printed from the ink and 

the labels can be flexed and bent 

without damage to the circuit. 

A small, reusable electronic 

module is added which triggers 

the alarm sound via a speaker if 

removed from the package or past 

a security sensor. 

The result is a very efficient 

and cost effective tag that is also 

smaller and better looking than 

many in current use. As you can 

see, there are virtually limitless 

applications for a product that is 

thin, highly conductive and virtually 

indestructible and which will 

be cheap to manufacture in volume 

once the wrinkles are ironed 

out of the process. 

More possible commercial uses 

for graphene include: 

Electrodes with very high surface 

area and very low electrical 

resistance; 

Components with higher 

strength-to-weight ratios such as 

windmill blades, fans and aircraft 

components; 

Lower cost solar cells; 

Transistors that operate at 

higher frequency than silicon – 

IBM has created a 150 gigahertz 

(Ghz) transistor – the quickest 

comparable silicon device runs at 

about 40 GHz; 

Printing of complex integrated 

circuits; 

Low cost display screens in 

mobile and other devices; 

Lithium-ion batteries that recharge 

faster; 

Ultra capacitors with better 

performance than batteries and 

which can recharge in minutes; 

Graphene powder added to 

tyres would make them much 

more durable. 

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. 

Graphene will be available in 

many different forms. Compare it 

to the way we use plastic today – 

everything from crisp packets to 

clothing could be made. 

The future could see credit 

cards contain as much processing 

power as your current smartphone. 

Your smart phone could 

be rolled up, too! 

Graphene manufacturer Vorbeck 

Systems – supplier of the 

aforementioned Siren Label – is 

talking about wearable electronics 

where circuits printed directly 

on fabrics can be embedded into 

clothing to perform various functions, 

from heating to body-monitoring 

sensors, with applications 

from sporting apparel to medical 

devices. 

Vorbeck recently demonstrated 

a messenger bag at the Consumer 

Electronics Show in Las Vegas, 

using Vor-ink to embed a mobile 

electronic charger, printed within 

the strap. 

As we all know, new technologies 

always work their way into 

the promotional products industry 

because of its huge diversity of 

and demand for something new 

– so look out for graphene-based 

products coming your way over 

the next few years!

Neighbours not a-Mused 

by fire alert at the Ricoh 

IT WAS a sight to strike terror 

into the heart of any veteran 

of the Trade Only National 

Show – its home, the 

Ricoh Arena in Coventry, was 

ablaze. 

The inset picture, uploaded by 

passer-by Kate Mulgrew to her 

Twitter account, literally spread 

like wildfire across the social networks, 

causing even PPD Editor 

Aidan Goldstraw to utter in his 

best Scooby Doo voice: “Nigel 

Bailey, where are you” 

Fortunately for the future of the 

UK’s only national promotional 

products show (and for a whole 

lot of other reasons), the explanation 

proved somewhat more 

mundane – though not without 

its drama. 

The “fire” was, in fact, part of 

the rehearsal for the Ricoh concert 

by Muse. 

Muse’s Matt Bellamy later 

tweeted: “We fired up the power 

station tonight. It nearly blew up 

Coventry!” 

Liz Cooper, the marketing director 

of the Ricoh Arena, later 

told the BBC she understood why 

people had thought the stadium 

was on fire. 

She said: “It was quite concerning, 

to be fair. 

“My first thoughts were obviously 

the residents around the 

Ricoh, so we got a message on to 

Twitter. 

“But within 10 minutes, with 

the power of social media, it just 

went ballistic. Everybody phoned, 

everybody was concerned. 

“Muse have got a very elaborate 

production set and they’d got 

chimneys on stage.” 

All is revealed in the bigger 

picture – and we’re guessing that 

thousands of Muse fans thought it 

worth the furore.

THE CORRECT way to pronounce 

the web graphics stand GIF 

(Graphics Interchange Format) 

has been a hot topic of conversation 

recently – apparently, we’ve 

all been saying it wrong. 

Receiving a lifetime achievement 

at the Webby awards, the 

format’s inventor Steve Wilhite 

insisted it should be pronounced 

“jif”(as in those little plastic lemons), 

rather than with a hard “g”. 

Wilhite incited a debate that 

generated 17,000 posts on Twitter, 

50 news articles and general 

outrage. 

Even the Oxford English Dictionary 

became embroiled and 

hedged its bets, saying it could be 

pronounced either way. 

The White House went further, 

with the Obama administration 

declaring for the hard G brigade. 

It would appear to most of us 

logical to pronounce the word 

with the hard “G” as in graphic. 

But not so, according to Wilhite, 

who created the file format 

in 1987 when he was working as 

a programmer for CompuServe. 

Some seasoned observers on the 

tech 

scene 

remarked that 

it was somewhat ungracious 

and petty of 

Wilhite to whinge about this 

when receiving a major award. 

But whatever the rights and 

wrongs of that, Tittle Tattle has 

seen the evidence, and at least 

can settle the argument for you. 

CompuServe used to distribute 

a graphics display program called 

CompuShow. In the documentation 

for version 8.33. in the FAQ 

section, it states: 

The GIF (Graphics Interchange 

Format), pronounced “JIF”, was 

designed by CompuServe and the 

official specification released in 

June of 1987. 

Or perhaps we should not be 

“spreading” the word, as it’s not 

only possibly a major PR coup for 

a certain squirty product made 

by Unilever, but in the US, Jif is 

the brand-leading peanut butter 

produced by rivals Proctor and 

Gamble… 

Lemonentary, my dear Watson. 

THE TRADITIONAL Dutch 

Queen’s Day, celebrated annually 

on April 30, was a very special 

event this year. 

Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands 

abdicated in favour of her 

son Willem Alexander (pictured 

above), who later that day was 

crowned as the new king. 

Part of the planned celebrations 

in Amsterdam was to be 

the release of 150,000 orange balloons. 

However, this event caused a 

furore amid environmental concerns 

over littering the environment 

and causing risk to wildlife 

– animals can become entangled, 

or mistake the material for food. 

So the release was cancelled – 

even though the balloons which 

had been ordered were biodegradable 

and were not fitted with 

any kind of string or ribbon. 

Maybe conditions will be more 

receptive next year – when the 

event will be known as King’s Day 

to mark the change of monarch.
