Demands and Needs<br />

<strong>MBNA</strong> does not offer any advice or recommendations about LifestyleProtect. We are only able to provide you with information. Please read this<br />

information carefully before you make any decision. It is your responsibility to ensure whether LifestyleProtect is suitable for your needs. For those<br />

eligible, LifestyleProtect meets the demands and needs of those who wish to ensure that their monthly minimum payments due under their associated<br />

credit card account will continue to be met in the event of:<br />

• accident, sickness, involuntary unemployment or becoming a carer up to age 65; or<br />

• hospitalisation if between the ages of 65 to 70 or if permanently retired from work and under 70.<br />

If you die, or if you receive twelve consecutive monthly benefits, the balance at the time your claim event occurred plus interest and charges that<br />

resulted from it will be paid in full.<br />

Price<br />

The cost of LifestyleProtect is 79p per £100 of your monthly statement balance. This cost includes Insurance Premium Tax at the current rate. For<br />

example, if for 3 months in a row your statement balance is £2,000 (which could include interest, and unpaid premiums from previous months), then<br />

the total cost of the cover would be £47.40 for those 3 months.<br />

If you had a claim accepted on the example balance of £2,000 you would receive £100 as your monthly benefit for the monthly premium of £15.80.<br />

This means that for every £15.80 that you pay as a monthly premium, you will get £100 per month as a claim payout. The monthly premium will be<br />

debited to your credit card account by the coverholder and may attract interest in accordance with your credit card terms and conditions.<br />

This Payment Protection Insurance is optional. There are other providers of Payment Protection Insurance and other products designed to protect you<br />

(1) Who Underwrites This Insurance<br />

This insurance is underwritten by Sterling Life Limited and Sterling Insurance Company Limited.<br />

For a detailed explanation about which company underwrites which element of cover please refer to the definition of ‘We, Us, Our’ in Part 1 of the<br />

Policy Document ‘Meaning of Words Used In This Policy’ for further details.<br />

(2) What Does The Insurance Cover<br />

LifestyleProtect provides Life, Disability (Accident and Sickness), Unemployment, Hospitalisation, Life Events and Carer Cover.<br />

IMPORTANT: You are only able to make a claim if there is a Claim Event Balance owing.<br />

Eligibility Requirements<br />

To be eligible for cover you must:<br />

1. be the first-named individual on the credit card agreement;<br />

2. be a UK resident;<br />

3. have agreed to pay the monthly premium by way of a transaction debited to your credit card account by the coverholder throughout the period of<br />

cover; and<br />

4. meet the age and employment status detailed in the following table:<br />

Must be at least 18 and under 65 years of age, and<br />

in work (other than in casual, temporary or<br />

occasional work)<br />

If during the period of cover you permanently retire from work or reach the age of 65, you will not be eligible for Disability, Unemployment or Carer<br />

Cover benefits but will be eligible for Life, Hospitalisation Insurance and Life Event benefits. If you are absent from work due to sickness or injury on<br />

the start date, your cover will start when you return to work, provided that this is within 30 days of the start date.<br />

within the first 60 days of cover (see Part 3(C) ‘What<br />

Is Not Covered’).<br />

- Unemployment that results from the non-renewal of a<br />

fixed-term contract within 180 days of the start date<br />

(see Part 3(C) ‘What Is Not Covered’).<br />

- Unemployment that results from the expiry of a fixedterm<br />

contract unless you have been employed for 12<br />

consecutive months and your contract has been<br />

renewed at least once, or you have been employed by<br />

the same employer on a permanent basis, but were<br />

transferred to a fixed-term contract without a break in<br />

employment (see Part 3(C) ‘What Is Not Covered’).<br />

- If you are self-employed (see section 4), you will not<br />

be covered unless your business has ceased to trade<br />

as a direct result of being unable to pay its debts when<br />

due and have declared this to HM Revenue &<br />

Customs (see Part 3(C) ‘What Is Not Covered’).<br />

- We will not pay benefit if your work ceases for reasons<br />

not associated with becoming a carer, or if the<br />

sickness, disease, condition or injury of the person<br />

being cared for existed before the start date of cover<br />

(see Section 4)(see Part 3(D) ‘What Is Not<br />

Covered’).<br />

- If in respect of any one Carer Cover claim we pay<br />

benefit to the value of the full balance as at the time<br />

your claim event occurred, then you will not be entitled<br />

to any further benefit under the Carer Cover part of<br />

this policy until you have returned to work for a<br />

continuous period of at least 6 months and you will not<br />

be able to submit any further claims for Carer Cover to<br />

look after the same close relative with the same<br />

condition (see Part 3(D) ‘What Is Not Covered’).<br />

- If you are self-employed (see Section 4), you will need<br />

to either; provide a letter from your accountant that<br />

confirms trading has been suspended and you are not<br />

receiving an income from the business; or, provide<br />

evidence that your business has totally and<br />

permanently ceased to trade and that you have filed<br />

cessation accounts with HM Revenue & Customs and<br />

that this did not occur for reasons other than you<br />

having to become a carer (see Part 3(D) ‘What Is Not<br />

Covered’).<br />

Benefits in brief<br />

- The policy will pay the balance<br />

owing at the date of death.<br />

- Each complete month, while the<br />

reason for your claim persists, the<br />

policy will pay 5% of the balance<br />

at the time your claim event<br />

occurred, or the minimum monthly<br />

payment on your credit card<br />

statement, whichever is the<br />

greatest.<br />

- Once the twelfth monthly benefit<br />

has been paid, or when the total<br />

benefit paid reaches the value of<br />

the balance at the time your claim<br />

event occurred, the policy will pay<br />

any remaining element of that<br />

balance including the fees and<br />

interest associated with it, and the<br />

monthly payments will cease.<br />

- If the reason for the claim persists<br />

for 12 months the policy will pay<br />

an additional sum up to the value<br />

of the premiums paid in the 2 year<br />

period prior to the date your claim<br />

event occurred.

- Claims are limited to a maximum of two in any one 12<br />

month period (see Part 3(F)).<br />

- Please note – you are only able to claim once under<br />

the benefits relating to:<br />

• retirement<br />

• returning to full time education.<br />

for each subsequent day of your<br />

time in hospital.<br />

(4) Are There Any Other Exclusions & Limitations<br />

The total aggregate payment for any claim will not exceed £100,000.<br />

Benefit shall not be payable under any part of this policy if you are currently receiving benefit from a prior claim on this policy, or if there is a zero<br />

balance on the claim event date.<br />

You are not covered for death, disability or hospitalisation resulting from a pre-existing medical condition; a pre-existing condition is defined as any<br />

condition, injury, illness, disease, sickness, related condition and/or associated symptoms, whether diagnosed or not about which you:<br />

• knew or should reasonably have known at the start date; or<br />

• had seen or arranged to see a doctor during the 12 months immediately before the start date<br />

You are defined as being self-employed if you are not in employment and are:<br />

• helping with, managing or carrying on business in the United Kingdom paying Class 2 National Insurance contributions and are liable to pay tax<br />

under Schedule D, Case I, II, IV or V of the Income and Corporation Taxes Act 1998; or<br />

• a partner in a partnership; or<br />

• a person who exercises direct or indirect control over a business (not necessarily the majority shareholder or holder of the majority voting rights);<br />

or<br />

• working for a business and in any way connected with a person who has control (as referred to above) over that business (for example, you are<br />

one of his or her family).<br />

(6) What Is The Duration Of This Policy & When Does It Terminate<br />

This is a monthly contract. Your cover will terminate at the earliest of the following:


• the date you die;<br />

• for Accident & Sickness, Unemployment and Carer Cover the date you reach the age of 65 or permanently retire from work (if earlier);<br />

• for Life, Hospitalisation and Life Events Cover the date you reach the age of 70;<br />

• upon non-payment of the monthly premium; or<br />

• the date on which the coverholder has put you on to a reduced payment programme; or<br />

• when the credit card agreement is terminated; or<br />

• if you leave the United Kingdom to permanently live abroad; or<br />

• upon cancellation of the policy.<br />

(8) How Can I Complain About This Policy<br />

All complaints relating to this policy should be referred to: Customer Liaison Manager, Sterling Insurance Group Limited, 50 Kings Hill Avenue, Kings<br />

Hill, West Malling, Kent, ME19 4JX. Telephone number 0800 068 3560, and from whom you can also obtain a copy of our complaints handling<br />

procedure.<br />

If you are not happy or the problem has not been resolved to your satisfaction, you may refer your complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service<br />

who will undertake an independent and impartial review of your complaint. The address and telephone number is Financial Ombudsman Service,<br />

South Quay Plaza, 183 Marsh Wall, London E14 9SR. Telephone 0845 080 1800. This does not affect your legal rights.<br />

(9) What Is The Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS)<br />

We are covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS). You may be entitled to compensation from the scheme if we cannot meet<br />

our obligations. This depends on the type of business and the circumstances of the claim. Further information about compensation scheme<br />

arrangements is available from the FSCS. Contact them at www.fscs.org.uk or call them on 020 7741 4100.<br />

Changes to the premium/terms and conditions of your policy and your/our rights to cancel.<br />

We reserve the right to make reasonable and proportionate changes to your rate of monthly premium and the terms and conditions of your insurance<br />

policy at any time; we may also cancel your policy, however at least 30 days advance written notice of any such change or cancellation will be<br />

provided to your last known address.<br />

Details of the reasons which may lead us to change your monthly premium or your policy's terms and conditions or cancel your policy are listed within<br />

your policy - Part 2 Terms and Conditions.<br />

YOUR RIGHTS TO CANCEL<br />

It is important that you read the policy terms and conditions to ensure the policy is suitable for you. You should do this within 30 days of<br />

receiving your policy. You may cancel this policy within 30 days of receiving it, in which case you will receive a full refund of any premium<br />

debited to your credit card account for the policy by way of a corresponding credit to the same account, provided you have not made a<br />

claim. If you do not cancel your policy within this 30 days, your policy will continue for the remaining period of cover, but you may cancel it<br />

at any time. If you cancel this policy after your initial 30-day cancellation period expires, you will not be entitled to a refund of any<br />

premiums paid for this policy unless you were ineligible for the policy at the start date of this insurance and that all information supplied to<br />

Is There Any Other Important Information I Should Know About<br />
