The building blocks for successful managers
Management Skills Development programme for Kier Group
CLIENT REQUIREMENT
During 2011, Kier undertook a full review of their
management competencies within the Group and
produced a new competency framework,
incorporating behavioural indicators at the four levels
of Contributor, Manager, Leader and Strategist.
This framework was to underpin a new management
development offer, ensuring appropriate links were
made between performance indicators, skills
development and performance reviews.
TQ were selected to support the development of
the Management Skills Development programme for
new managers, offering two different routes through
the programme depending on the level of
experience and competence.
THE TQ PROGRAMME
After spending time with the target populations, TQ
identified a desire for a blended learning approach to
reduce time away from the workplace and also to
improve access to materials. However there
appeared to be a limited appetite for e-learning.
TQ developed a core suite of 3 face-to-face
modules covering the key behavioural themes within
the competency framework. These were
supplemented with a suite of Skills Development
‘Workbooks’ to complete the curriculum.
The Workbooks were distributed as enabled PDF
documents allowing learners to complete them on
their computers, but in a fairly traditional way.
This thus bridged the gap between paper based and
online content and satisfyied the learner preferences
alongside the business requirement to make more
effective use of technology.
MEASURING SUCCESS
Based on evidence gathered and analysed by Kier
Group, TQ’s modules received fantastic reviews:
• 94% of participants rated Modules as Good or
Excellent for ‘participation encouraged’.
• 97% of participants rated Modules as Good or
Excellent for ‘understanding improved’.
• 100% of participants rated Modules as Good or
Excellent ‘overall’.
