Generating a plan involves testing pressures and air quality at different parts of the building during each phase of the production cycle and making corrections to the air quality by implementing controls to minimize the likelihood of airborne contamination. The raw side or “dirty” side will cause predictable disturbances in heat, humidity, air flow and microbe movement in the air that are specific to that process and relative to the finished side. The finished side for packing will experience changes in relation to the hot side and areas of egress where air is likely to meet because of product movement. This model works on large-scale operations as surely as on smaller ones. These data should be gathered over a specific period of time, taking into account the different cycles of the manufacturing process. It requires an understanding of the subtleties associated with different microbes and their propensity for movement and actions associated with different environments. If you need a different set of eyes to see what is going on in your manufacturing environment or to address an unresolved issue of product contamination, consult a certified industrial hygienist who specializes in food manufacturing environmental air quality. ASSE and the Manufacturing Practice Specialty (MPS) would like to congratulate Ken Wengert, CSP, ARM, who received the MPS Safety Professional of the Year award. Wengert is safety director of North American manufacturing for Kraft Foods. He currently serves as MPS membership chair. In this role, Wengert consistently reaches out to members and develops strategies for member retention. He has also created a brochure and PowerPoint presentation to help market MPS at local ASSE meetings. In addition, his support was instrumental during the Manufacturing Congratulations Branch’s transition to a practice specialty. Wengert’s contributions, great ideas and positive attitude have made him a model volunteer and contributor to the safety community. 14 Safely Made www.asse.org 2011
Safety 2011 MPS Recap Safety 2011 was a huge success, with record attendance and special events to celebrate ASSE’s 100th anniversary. The Manufacturing Practice Specialty (MPS) held its annual face-toface meeting, during which we discussed manufacturing issues and our focus for 2011-12. MPS also sponsored a session on hazard recognition and led a roundtable discussion on changes in manufacturing industries affected by the economy. MPS leadership attended the biannual Council on Practices and Standards meeting where growth and technological engagement were discussed. MPS also sponsored a kiosk in the exhibit hall, and MPS volunteers helped answer questions at the practice specialties booth where free practice specialties were raffled, complimentary newsletters were available for all 28 groups and mouse pads were distributed.
