MOVE MORE, EAT WELL – J. Poulin
December is here and with it has come the colder, shorter
winter days. This month I encourage every family to get
out and enjoy the crisp, cool days. I encourage you to
embrace the weather rather than fight it; to get out for a
walk around the block enjoying the lights and decorations
or have a great play at the local park where the best way to
stay warm is to jump in with the kids.
Eating Right This Holiday Season
Source: www.kidzworld.com
So you’re smack dab in the middle of the holiday season
and surrounded by treats galore. How on earth are you
going to avoid pounding back dessert squares, appetizers,
chips and dip, cake, pie and all the other scrumptious
delights that will line the tables at all the festive gettogethers
Well, maybe you don’t have to avoid them
completely. Read on for some easy-to-follow eating tips for
you to abide by this year.
Healthy Eating 101
You don’t have to skirt around the snack table at all the
holiday parties you attend this year to escape from gaining
any extra pounds. Instead of loading your plate up to the
brim with sweets, just take a couple items to nibble on. If
there’s a fruit platter around, pile your plate full of grapes
and melon balls instead of handfuls of gingerbread.
Healthy Eating – Tasty Alternatives
Drink fruit juices or water instead of pop or eggnog during
the holidays. You can still have that glass of soda or
eggnog at supper, but you just want to avoid chugging
numerous cans of Coke throughout the holidays. Suggest
that you can make a fruit juice punch for Christmas or New
Year’s and just add soda water instead of Sprite or 7-Up.
It’ll be a tasty alternative that everyone will want to try.
Healthy Eating – Everything in Moderation
Remember that you don’t have to cut out all the tasty treats
from your diet that are circulating at this time of the year –
it’s just a matter of “everything in moderation.” Instead of
piling your plate with turkey and all the fixings, take smaller
portions. If you’re still hungry after dinner, go back for a
second round of veggies. And, if you want a couple of
chocolates, go for it. Just don’t end up sitting in front of the
TV watching holiday specials and finishing off a whole box
on your own.
Step Up Your Family’s Fitness for the Holidays
Source: Step With It!
Keeping fit during the holidays may seem like a daunting
task. Add the pressure of making sure the entire family is
active, and many parents throw up their hands in defeat.
But family fitness needn’t be considered a “mission
impossible,” according to certified fitness expert, Ruth
Lahmayer, MS, RD. All it takes is a few steps in the right
direction.
“One simple solution is to increase your family’s AQ—or
Activity Quotient, a measure of your family’s physical
activity. For instance, wearing a pedometer and tracking
the number of steps you take gives you a general idea of
how much activity you are getting each day. From that
measure you can then set goals for increasing activity—
such as taking more walks, playing games outside, walking
in place during commercials on TV—just about any activity
can count towards your physical activity goals. It’s a fun
and challenging way to keep the entire family active
together.”
Research results have shown that wearing a pedometer
was a simple, non-invasive way for individuals to increase
awareness of their daily activity and improve their overall
fitness level.
“The research showed that a simple activity like wearing a
pedometer to count your steps is an effective method of
maintaining activity awareness and can help you set and
keep your activity goals,” said Lahmayer. “Since most
moms act as their family’s ‘activity coach’, I recommend
that they encourage their families to follow their lead and
find ways to include 30 – 60 minutes of daily activity in their
schedules whether it is through a pedometer program or
another activity that the family enjoys.”
Lahmayer recommends families consider participating in
one of many walking programs that have recently been
started as a way to jump-start their fitness regimen.
Families can also search online to find information about
local walking programs, and to download step logs and the
latest information on pedometers. One such site is
www.stepchallenge.com which offers tools such as the
“Activity Quotient Quiz”—a fun test to help users determine
their starting fitness levels.
Health Eating – Laying Off the Sweets
Skip all the chocolates and candy canes that are being
handed out left, right and center and grab a piece of fruit
instead. Yes, that may sound lame, but your body will
thank you in the end. If the thought of noshin’ on an apple
sends shivers down your spine, why not grab a couple
mandarin oranges or slice up a mango as a special holiday
