From the Office:
February 2008
The snow has finally arrived and it finally feels like winter! Many of our
students are still coming to school without the proper clothing to play outside
during recess and lunchtime. Please make sure that your child leaves
home dressed for the cold weather: (sweater, coat, hat, scarf, gloves/
mittens and boots).
A reminder: Late arrivals and Absences have a huge negative impact on
student learning. As mentioned in last months newsletter, we need to make
sure that students arrive on time for each and every day. That means children
should be lined up to enter the school at 8:10 a.m. It is the parent’s
responsibility to make sure that this happens.
We need to work together to ensure that your child achieves to high standards.
In addition to maintaining good attendance, students need to practice
developing skills at home every night! Reading every day for at least
20 minutes makes a huge impact on Literacy achievement. Literacy is
the most important gift we can give our children. It opens the doors to
many venues. You are encouraged to listen to your child read, prompting
them when they cannot figure out words, and discussing the text’s content.
Encourage your child to think about the text’s message and the important
ideas linking to the author’s intention. As well, dialogue that encourages
thinking beyond the text, perhaps even questioning it, is powerful. Reading
is the most important homework your child can do!!
Parents: Please take note of the Fire Route signs in our driveway! There is
a $100.00 fine from the Town of Vaughan for parking in a Fire Route. This
is a safety issue for all students, staff and parents who are in our building.
The By-law officers will come around at any time, we have already has parents
ticketed.
HEALTH CORNER - February
Health Fact: SOME WAYS TO STAY HEALTHY
• Eat a variety of foods, especially fruits and vegetables
• Drink water and milk most often
• Limit screen time What's screen time It's the amount of
time you spend watching TV or DVDs, playing video games and
using the computer
• Be active
Snack of the month: YOGURT
bacteria help to digest food and prevent stomach infections
February is Black History Month in Canada
Throughout the month, daily morning announcements
will celebrate the significant
contributions that Afro-Americans and Afro-
Canadians have made and are making to our
rich ethnic diversity.
CHARACTER CORNER: INITIATIVE
We act without being prompted by others.
We are eager to do what needs to be done
without having to be told to do it. We take
the first step towards the achievement of a
goal.

Teston Village Public School Page 4
Recently, Teston Village P. S. provided training for parent volunteers who were interested in supporting our primary children in the
area of reading and reading comprehension. Our goal for the session was to provide our volunteers with tools that they could use to
foster the use of independent reading strategies in our young readers. We created a 'bookmark' that provided prompts for reading
coaches to use when listening to children read. The front of the bookmark, 'Our Great Reading Strategies', gives prompts that
coaches can use when children are reading to them; that is, during the reading, to help a child solve for an unknown word. On the
opposite side of the bookmark are prompts that reading coaches can use, after the reading, to facilitate the child's increased understanding
of the story. There was such a positive response to the bookmark that we decided that it would be a useful tool for parents
to use when listening to their children read to them at home.
COACH YOUR CHILDREN WHEN THEY READ TO YOU …
Prompt them to help them solve for unknown words and Ask questions to Check for Understanding:
Comprehension
Choose one or two activities (after the reading)
Retell the story (fiction)
Look for: child sequencing the story accurately, using
vocabulary from the story (e.g. characters name) and
retell is in his/her own words.
Beginning – Characters, Setting, Problem
Middle – List at least 4 events
End – Solution
Summary (non-fiction)
Look for:
Identifies topic of text.
Summarizes main idea with supporting details.
Uses his/her own words.
Sequences information logically.
Interprets charts, pictures and tables.
Making Connections
Look for: can child make connections to the story using
his/her background knowledge
Prompts (you may use to support child)
This reminds me of when…
This story makes me feel…because…
This reminds me of the story…
What other books did you think of while reading
This happened in another place…
4. Asking Questions (Reflect)
Who is/were the main character(s)
Describe the …..(e.g. setting)
I wonder how…
I wonder why…
I wonder where…
I wonder who…
I wonder what…
