Building <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong> Skills with Families on Sexual Identity,<br />

Behavior and Education<br />

This mini-course will provide an overview <strong>of</strong> the multiple ways that sexuality impacts contemporary family<br />

relationships. This course will explore how the social context <strong>of</strong> the family shapes sexual experiences, health,<br />

and inequality. In addition to gaining a general familiarity with how sexuality impacts families, this course will<br />

provide a more in-depth analysis <strong>of</strong> three specific instances <strong>of</strong> sexuality in families: Conversations about sexuality<br />

and sex education, “coming out” as Transgender, Bisexual, Lesbian and Gay (TBLG), and sexual health. This<br />

course will identify best practice strategies for addressing issues <strong>of</strong> sexuality that arise in a family context, with<br />

a focus on how social workers may use these skills in their work with families and family members.<br />

Instructor: Kristin S. Scherrer, MSW, MA, is a PhD candidate in Sociology and <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong> at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Michigan</strong>. Her research interests include the construction <strong>of</strong> sexual identities, asexuality, bisexuality, gender,<br />

families, intergenerational relationships, aging and the life course, and her dissertation focuses on understanding<br />

grandparent-LGBQ grandchild relationships. Ms. Scherrer has worked with LGBTQ individuals and their<br />

families through the Ruth Ellis Center and the Spectrum Center.<br />

Treatment <strong>of</strong> Mood Disorders<br />

MINI-COURSES<br />

The focus <strong>of</strong> this mini-course is on the concepts, theory and practice appropriate to the effective intervention <strong>of</strong><br />

Interpersonal Therapy for the treatment <strong>of</strong> mood disorders. This course will focus on the brief, focused, evidence-based<br />

treatment using IPT (Interpersonal therapy) as developed by Myrna Weissman. The course will<br />

include in-depth skill-building for use in providing the IPT model <strong>of</strong> treatment.<br />

Instructor: Kristine M. Konz, LMSW, is an adjunct faculty at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Michigan</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong>,<br />

and a clinician and psychotherapist at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Michigan</strong> Ambulatory Psychiatry Clinic. She has been<br />

trained in the evidence-based practices <strong>of</strong> Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and<br />

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and has been a trainer in Interpersonal Psychotherapy for both the psychiatric<br />

social work intern and residency programs for the past eight years. Ms. Konz has a special interest in women’s<br />

mental health and bipolar disorder.<br />
