Cultural Humility:<br />

A Paradigm Shift in How to <strong>Work</strong> with Diverse Populations<br />

This training will teach the concept <strong>of</strong> Cultural Humility, which challenges child welfare staff to learn from the<br />

diverse people with whom they work, reserve judgment, and bridge the cultural divide between perspectives, in<br />

order to develop a collaborative working relationship. Another key concept in the training is Intersectionality,<br />

which recognizes that human differences vary along important dimensions, but work together, interact and lead<br />

to individual differences and perspectives depending on the social context.<br />

Presenters: Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Robert Ortega, PhD, MSW, has been on the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Michigan</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong> faculty since 1991, and is a clinical consultant to the <strong>School</strong>’s Family Assessment Clinic. He is currently<br />

involved in several national research projects and organizations focusing on child welfare, adoption, and<br />

child well-being.<br />

Visitation and Child Welfare Decision-Making<br />

This workshop will provide didactic material about 1) models for examining parent-child interactions;<br />

2) using a Cultural Humility lens when interpreting parent-child interactions; 3) other factors to consider in<br />

evaluating parent-child interactions; and 4) integrating observations about the parent-child relationship with<br />

other information in decision-making about permanency planning.<br />

CHILD WELFARE WORKSHOPS<br />

Presenter: Kathleen Coulborn <strong>Fall</strong>er, PhD, ACSW, DCSW, is the Marion Elizabeth Blue Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Children and<br />

Families in the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong> at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Michigan</strong>. Her research includes the study <strong>of</strong> multidisciplinary<br />

assessments, criminal prosecution <strong>of</strong> sexual abuse, and child welfare workforce issues.<br />
