<strong>Fall</strong>ing through the Safety Net: Off Welfare but Not out <strong>of</strong> Poverty<br />
This panel session will highlight current, relevant faculty research surrounding issues <strong>of</strong> poverty. Panelists will present<br />
their own ‘wish list’ <strong>of</strong> policy changes they believe might aid in reducing the poverty rates, and will discuss how their<br />
wish list compares to policy changes being taken into consideration by the Obama administration<br />
Presenters: Sandra Danziger, PhD, a is pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> social work and research pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> public policy. Her primary<br />
research interests include the effects <strong>of</strong> public programs and policies on the well-being <strong>of</strong> disadvantaged families,<br />
and poverty policy and social service programs.<br />
Laura Lein, PhD, is the dean <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Michigan</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong>. Her work has concentrated on the<br />
interface between families in poverty and the institutions that serve them.<br />
Sherrie Kossoudji, PhD, is an associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor in the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Michigan</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong> and an adjunct<br />
associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor in the Department <strong>of</strong> Economics. Much <strong>of</strong> her work attempts to discern the link between legal<br />
status in the United States and economic outcomes.<br />
Luke Shaefer, PhD, is an assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> social work at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Michigan</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong>.<br />
Shaefer’s research focuses on the effectiveness <strong>of</strong> the U.S. social safety net in serving low-wage workers and economically<br />
disadvantaged families.<br />

The Current Economic Crisis and its<br />
Affect on Vulnerable Populations<br />
This session will outline important economic changes brought about by the current economic crisis, the impact <strong>of</strong><br />
those changes on traditionally recognized vulnerable populations, the creation <strong>of</strong> new vulnerable populations, and<br />
expectations about economic changes and their impact in the future. Discussion will focus on<br />
issues <strong>of</strong> class, social justice, and diversity and how social workers can address their clients’<br />
needs in this environment.<br />
