POETRY . . .
By Henrietta Bensussen
A TALK BY DR. WALT
“I was an ocean dermatologist,”
Dr. Walt says. For years he studied
its skin, the top inches of surface.
“Our planet should be named
Ocean rather than Earth.”
He’s like a magician with a magic hat.
Seawater warms, swells, cools
on a yearly cycle, warmer each time,
as vegetation absorbs CO 2
in spring,
dies to release it in the fall. He clicks
his wand to bring up the next slide.
“This shows our planet breathing.”
He points to a graph of upward trending
hatch marks. The audience squints,
takes a collective breath, working out
a wary measure of his confidence.
The oceans on Venus boiled away
eons ago, leaving a dank “billiard ball,”
Doc calls it. We huddle in our folding chairs
imagining a world of slime as he sums up
with “Welcome to the future. It’s wet,”
and we stand in awe and clap our hands.
RACCOON NIGHTS
Raccoons took over the pond last night
shredding water lilies, tossing out the pump.
Knocked half-ripe apples to the ground
Dug into the new-planted lettuces.
They admire the fashion for vegetable gardens,
understand our devotion to the homegrown
to compost heaps and rows of heritage corn.
Native locovores like us new farmers
they turn up every night to plow the fruits
of our labor into their own hungry mouths.
BEACH TOWNS
Every beach town street
drains to a low point where water
rolls castoffs, tearful bar fights
bloody rages down to a sea
that accepts it, unconditionally
Where it’s grabbed by the hungry
consumed by the indiscriminate
or gyred to the surface for scientists
to collect, and leftovers plummet
deep to a muddy burial ground
Of interred artifacts, histories—
even the smallest shard of bone
reflects a hard-knock view
of the states of our unruly nature.
WINTER MIGRATION
I have my square of dawn to watch
flocks of birds rushed south by storms.
Blackbirds, Sparrows, Siskins, Finches
though not Doves. They’ll stay for hours
waiting for us to fill the feeders. We spendthrifts
spend to keep them all afloat and flying
to places we can’t afford. We’re tied
to doctors, the comfort of our beds,
our habits and medications. We are doves
of age. We age in place. We die at home.
Henri Bensussen has published poems and stories in
various journals and anthologies. She serves on the
boards of the Mendocino Coast Writers Conference and
the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, and collects
plants, bird lists, discarded metal objects of no known
use, and anything that can be added to a compost pile,
or a poem; she herself is decomposing in the dews and
fogs of coastal living.
