A TALK BY DR. WALT<br />

“I was an ocean dermatologist,”<br />

Dr. Walt says. For years he studied<br />

its skin, the top inches of surface.<br />

“Our planet should be named<br />

Ocean rather than Earth.”<br />

He’s like a magician with a magic hat.<br />

Seawater warms, swells, cools<br />

on a yearly cycle, warmer each time,<br />

as vegetation absorbs CO 2<br />

in spring,<br />

dies to release it in the fall. He clicks<br />

his wand to bring up the next slide.<br />

“This shows our planet breathing.”<br />

He points to a graph of upward trending<br />

hatch marks. The audience squints,<br />

takes a collective breath, working out<br />

a wary measure of his confidence.<br />

The oceans on Venus boiled away<br />

eons ago, leaving a dank “billiard ball,”<br />

Doc calls it. We huddle in our folding chairs<br />

imagining a world of slime as he sums up<br />

with “Welcome to the future. It’s wet,”<br />

and we stand in awe and clap our hands.<br />

RACCOON NIGHTS<br />

Raccoons took over the pond last night<br />

shredding water lilies, tossing out the pump.<br />

Knocked half-ripe apples to the ground<br />

Dug into the new-planted lettuces.<br />

They admire the fashion for vegetable gardens,<br />

understand our devotion to the homegrown<br />

to compost heaps and rows of heritage corn.<br />

Native locovores like us new farmers<br />

they turn up every night to plow the fruits<br />

of our labor into their own hungry mouths.<br />

BEACH TOWNS<br />

Every beach town street<br />

drains to a low point where water<br />

rolls castoffs, tearful bar fights<br />

bloody rages down to a sea<br />

that accepts it, unconditionally<br />

Where it’s grabbed by the hungry<br />

consumed by the indiscriminate<br />

or gyred to the surface for scientists<br />

to collect, and leftovers plummet<br />

deep to a muddy burial ground<br />

Of interred artifacts, histories—<br />

even the smallest shard of bone<br />

reflects a hard-knock view<br />

of the states of our unruly nature.<br />

WINTER MIGRATION<br />

I have my square of dawn to watch<br />

flocks of birds rushed south by storms.<br />

Blackbirds, Sparrows, Siskins, Finches<br />

though not Doves. They’ll stay for hours<br />

waiting for us to fill the feeders. We spendthrifts<br />

spend to keep them all afloat and flying<br />

to places we can’t afford. We’re tied<br />

to doctors, the comfort of our beds,<br />

our habits and medications. We are doves<br />

of age. We age in place. We die at home.<br />

Henri Bensussen has published poems and stories in<br />

various journals and anthologies. She serves on the<br />

boards of the <strong>Mendocino</strong> Coast Writers Conference and<br />

the <strong>Mendocino</strong> Coast Botanical Gardens, and collects<br />

plants, bird lists, discarded metal objects of no known<br />

use, and anything that can be added to a compost pile,<br />

or a poem; she herself is decomposing in the dews and<br />

fogs of coastal living.<br />
