When in
Elmhurst...
by Anne Marie McLean
Elmhurst: the eighth wonder of the world. We’ve
all been to this town and some of us live there. But
what makes Elmhurst so great, the envy of all other
towns Here’s just a few of the town’s highlights to
keep in mind for visits on weekends or breaks.
First of all, everyone loves the York Theatre.
What other theatre is so
inexpensive (only $5.50
for students), newly
remodeled, and right in
the heart of shops and
restaurants It is great for
seeing movies the day they
come out, and is rarely
overcrowded.
Also, while at the York
Theatre, look no further
than across the street for
a place to hang out before
viewing a film. It is here
that the famed fountain
of Elmhurst resides. It’s
surrounded by places to
eat, and in the winter it
is lit up by an enormous
Christmas tree. Still,
Friars should beware of the
12-year-old Goth kids with
capes who hang around
that fountain.
Another great aspect
of Elmhurst is, of course,
the food. If you’re thinking Italian, the best is Two
Brothers from Italy, Lou Malnati’s and DiLeo’s.
Otherwise there’s a great selection of Mexican,
Chinese, Thai, and of course, American restaurants.
Some great one’s are Silverado’s Grill, Buffalo
Wild Wings, and Mr. G’s. Haven for root beer float
fanatics and burgers fans, the legendary Hamburger
Heaven is another great place to stop for a bite to eat.
As for dessert, there’s basically everything under
the sun, including the delicious Rocky Mountain
Chocolate Factory. If you’re someone with a
caffeine addiction, then you can visit Starbucks or
Caribou Coffees. It might serve you well to also
take a look at the new Jamba Juice that is being built
next to the York.
An additional high point of Elmhurst as a bustling
By Beau Blakely
Since it seems that summer refuses to die this year, we might as well embrace one of the aspects that
makes summer seem so liberating - rolling down your windows and playing songs at chassis-shaking
volumes. There is no better feeling than sonically assaulting the suit in the Mecedes next to you via
your screaming car stereo. Here are some songs that are sure to turn heads.
1 - “Here I Come” - The Roots
This song’s claim to fame is its cameo in SUPERBAD, but the its definitely worth another couple
hundred listens. The one party song off The Roots’ socially conscious GAME THEORY, “Here I
Come” is a fantastic showcase for The Roots, with Black Thought in his finest form in years, not to
mention the triumphant return of former Root Malik B. But more important than the flow is the music,
and as usual, The Roots deliver. uestlove is absolutely tremendous on this song and the rest of the
band is perfectly locked in with him. Crank the bass up on this one and watch your car bounce.
2 - “Search & Destroy” - Iggy & the Stooges
Actually, this might not be a good song for this list. The mixing on this song is so earth-shatteringly
violent that if Iggy Pop’s crazed howls don’t send your speakers to speaker heaven, James
Williamson’s frantic fretwork will. But if you are willing to risk a trip to your local auto-parts store,
this song perfectly captures the sounds of a band in the midst of a total collapse.
3 - “Iron Tusk” - Mastodon
With this song, Mastodon finally turned out a song that matched its namesake in heaviness.
Everything from the strident riff that introduces the song to the snaking guitar interplay in the verses
to the distorted vocals drips with agressiveness. And even better, the song’s visceral punch stings even
more when when it is played LOUDLY. A crowd pleaser to say the least.
4 - “Since U Been Gone” - Kelly Clarkson
Come on, admit it. As indie as you think you are, you crank this song whenever it comes on the radio.
Miss Clarkson’s knack for nailing a hook is unsurpassed in Top 40 radio, and this song is her crowning
achievement. The explosive chorus practically begs listener participation, and if you’re willing to draw
attention by blasting music, you’d better be willing to embarrass yourself by shouting yourself hoarse to this song. Okay
fine, the solo bites it, but what can you do Sing along, that’s what.
5 - “Bohemian Rhapsody” - Queen
The mother of all car-blasting songs. Everything in this song, from the a capella beginning to the chimes at the end has
been perfectly recorded for replay at potentially tinnitus-inducing levels of volume. An in-car sing-along to this song is
akin to a spiritual experience. Freddie Mercury’s immaculate voice defies replication, but to those who have croaked and
warbled their way through this song together, a bond has formed. They may never agree on anything else, but for that one
moment, they are all united in paying homage to one of rock’s greatest acheivements. That and the head-banging part is
pretty cool too.
town is the shopping. Whether it’s clothes, jewelry,
or books, it probably can be found in Elmhurst. Just
head to Elmhurst City Centre, whose motto is “good
finds, good times.” One great place is the Dick Pond
Athletics for all your sporting needs. Another cool
shop is Enzee Boutique, though it is slightly pricey.
Here’s the one last lure of Elmhurst: the
Prairie Path. For
running, walking,
or biking, it’s a
wonderful place
to get exercise and
work off that sundae
from Oberweis. The
people are friendly,
the path is scenic,
and the price is right:
totally free.
If all of these
reasons aren’t
enough to convince
you that it is a great
town, Halloween is
approaching and what
better way to spend it
than in Elmhurst If
you are looking for
a safe, fun place to
go trick-or-treating,
Elmhurst is the town
The York Theatre in downtown Elmhurst is a very popular
source of entertainment. Photo by Gary Mitchell
to beat. Get your
friends or siblings,
find a makeshift
costume and pillowcase candy bag, and then you’ll
be all set to trick-or-treat in the residential or even
downtown areas of Elmhurst.
Besides the unusual candy, Elmhurstians have
been known to give out cereal, chips, toothpaste, and
even money (only a dollar - don’t get too excited.)
However, if you are in downtown Elmhurst by the
fountain of Halloween, remember the creepy emo
kids, they aren’t in costume.
All right, so now you are thoroughly
enlightened in the wonders of Elmhurst and it is time
to experience them for yourself. Take a break from
studying, watch out for those funny one-way streets,
and take a visit to Elmhurst. You may find that you
never want to leave.
A new twist on
Cymbeline
By Neala Barron
Shakespeare weaves a
dark fairy tale in the Chicago
Shakespeare Theatre’s
rendition of Cymbeline,
running this October and
November. The performance
combines heartfelt theatrics
with superior staging and
acting, making it tops on
many audience lists for the
beginnings of the 2007-2008
theatre season in Chicago.
The story follows that
of Posthumous, a man of
low birth but exceeding
personal merit, and his
secret marriage to Imogen,
daughter of King Cymbeline.
Cymbeline, outraged at this
diversion from his personal
wants, banishes Posthumus
from the kingdom, and the
rest of the events follow
this catalytic event. There
are numerous side plots
and which add to the multifaceted
complexity of the
play. It has a taste of every
character: the evil and
entertaining Iachimo, the
chaste Imogen, hopeless
romantic Posthumous,
kings, Frenchmen, even
Jupiter makes an appearance
from Mount Olympus midperformance.
Chicago Shakespeare
is not a theatre to let an
audience down with their
productions, and Cymbeline
is certainly no exception.
The quality of acting was
vivid, each player having the
same tenacity and energy as
the next. Their refined talent
was complemented by visual
spectacle in the staging,
sets, and costumes, which
really knew no bounds.
The ceilings of the theatre
seemed to open up as Jupiter
descended from above in
a wave of cloud and dust
during a scene. The show
has a little of everything for
everyone; quality acting,
grand visual detail, and an
interesting story to be told.
Be warned: although
entertaining, Cymbeline
is almost one hundred
percent based in plot,
and relies very little on
character development.
It does take some active
brain power to keep track
of characters, motives,
and advancements and is
for the audience member
that is ready and willing
to think. If the convoluted,
tangled plot is kept straight
however, the audience is
greatly rewarded with a play
that is intellectually, and
aesthetically stimulating.
Cymbeline plays that the
Chicago Shakespeare
through November 11th
and is surely a show worth
checking out.
