2009-2010 ANNUAL REPORT

EVERYONE HAS A STORY.
HELP US CREATE A HAPPY ENDING.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
As we reflect on 2009-2010, I’m
excited to share with you the
agency’s work over the past year.
In October 2009, we launched our
Youthville Story campaign to share
the stories of children, families,
volunteers, donors and staff. This
is a special campaign because at
the end of the day, it is the stories
of these individuals that truly reflect our work here at
Youthville. I encourage you to visit YouthvilleStory.com,
to hear their inspiring stories and testimonials.
I commend our more than 600 employees who are
hard at work in an effort to create positive stories for
the children and families we serve. They continually
humble me in the very difficult, and often thankless,
work they do.
As you continue to learn more about the agency by
reading this report, we hope that you will especially
take a look at the tribute section. This particular
section recognizes all of the wonderful support we
receive from volunteers, churches, corporations
and individual donors. Youthville could not care for
the number of families we do without your
commitment and support. I have the honor of
meeting with many of our donors throughout the
state and it is so heartening to know we have
so much behind the scenes support from such a
wonderful group of folks. I want to express my
sincere appreciation for your support through
the years. We truly could not do what we do
without each and every one of you.
We also want you to know we are being very
mindful about the state of our current economy
and continually seek new ways to cut costs so
your support goes further than ever before.
Thank you for helping us to fulfill our mission of
Giving Children Back Their Childhood.
Sincerly,
Shelley Duncan
President and CEO
PERMANENCY
Taleeda and her brother were raised in Wichita, KS by
a single mother. Taleeda came into state custody at the age of
16. When she turned 18, her dream was to go to college so that
she could further her education and be able to support herself.
With the help of Youthville’s Life Skills unit, Taleeda was able
to easily transition to independent living. This permanency unit
works with children, ages 16 to 18, serving as a resource and
teaching necessary independent skills to become successful in
adulthood.
Taleeda was accepted to the University of Kansas to obtain a
degree in nursing. Living in an apartment, attending college
and not having parents to rely on would make her financial
situation very tight.
“I often find myself in financial binds, which comes along with
the territory of independence, but this financial assistance
really does help ease the burden,” said Taleeda.
Her dream would soon come true through the support of an
anonymous Youthville donor. Her education is covered by the
state, so the donor’s support helps cover living expenses.
“I am working vigorously at my part time job, but with a
shortage of hours, I find that I am barely making ends meet.
This assistance will help me to continue to have a roof over my
head so that I may continue to complete my studies.”
ADOPTION
Bethany and Micah Wood, from rural
Stevens County, began their adoption journey
in 2007 when they decided they wanted to
become foster parents. The couple signed up for
a Permanence and Safety - Model Approach to
Partnerships in Parenting (PS-MAPP) class through
Youthville and became licensed foster parents
in June 2008, after completing the classes. Four
weeks later, Bethany and Micah received their
first placement, a one-year-old little girl named
Diamond. A few months later, Diamond’s sister
Jasmine came into the Wood’s care and the girls
quickly became a part of the family. Soon they felt
they couldn’t let the two girls go and began the
adoption process.
“You develop too much of a bond with these kids
and make such an investment of time, love and
passion into these kids just to let them go,” said
Bethany. “If they can return to the biological
parents, that’s great... that’s what foster parenting
is all about, but if not, you can’t just let them go.”
FOSTER CARE
Hipolita and Laura Mancinas wanted to
provide help to children in need and made the
decision to become foster parents last August. They
knew they had plenty of love and passion to give to
children with physical, emotional and social needs.
“There are so many kids that need help,” said Laura.
“Kids are the future. If we don’t look out for our
future, who will”
An important part of placing children with parents
who will be a good match is finding parents with the
same race and ethnic background of the child.
“It’s extremely important to place children with
families who share their race/ethnic background
whenever possible,” said Tana McKee, Youthville
placement supervisor. “Doing so gives the child
something in common with this new family from the
very beginning. But, the reality is that there are
not enough resource homes available to make that
cultural match in every case.”
Laura says that foster care is very rewarding for her
and her family. They enjoy seeing each child succeed,
and are rewarded with the thought of just getting to
touch another child’s life.
“There are so many kids that
need help,” said Laura. “Kids
are the future. If we don’t
look out for our future, who
will”
Several years ago Crystal found herself in the
middle of repeated domestic violence episodes. After
finally leaving the situation, she found not only herself
struggling with the effects of the violence, but her
children struggling as well.
Crystal and her family turned to Youthville’s Family
Consultation Service (FCS) and began family and
individual counseling. While one of her children had a
harder time than the others, Crystal found the therapy to
be extremely helpful for her family.
“Our family therapist came to our house and she felt like
part of our family,” said Crystal. “It wasn’t like talking
to someone you don’t know. She came once a week and
would ask us what we needed. It really helped.”
As a result, Crystal says they all worked on the things
they needed to in an effort to get their lives back to
where they needed to be. She says it has helped them
sleep easier at night. Crystal recommends anyone in a
similar situation give counseling a try.
“If you find one therapist that doesn’t work, there are
many others,” said Crystal. “We went through a few to
find the right one, but when you do find the right one,
it works and it helps.”
“Our family therapist came to
RESIDENTIAL
At the age of 12, Jenn developed an eating
disorder resulting in multiple
hospital stays, with a small
chance of recovery. This led
to drinking alcohol to numb
the pain and self-harming.
Eventually, the pain led to a
couple of suicide attempts,
and she was placed in a
psychiatric ward and later
placed with Youthville.
As her time at Youthville drew to a close, Pastor
Jeff and Juanita both encouraged Jenn to go to
a program called Mercy Ministries, a Christian
residential treatment facility that is free-of-charge
for girls with life controlling issues.
Jenn graduated from Mercy Ministries in Spring 2009,
and that fall went to Grace University in Omaha, NE
to major in Pastoral Ministry. Jenn says she can’t
wait to change lives just how God used people to
change her life.
During her time at Youthville,
staff members Juanita Ediger
and Pastor Jeff Jensen, helped her find the love of
God through long talks and chapel services. This gave
Jenn the hope of a positive recovery.
ADVANCEMENT
In October 2009, Spirit Aerosystems Good
Neighbor Fund made a contribution in the amount of
$28,500 to Youthville.
These dollars will support a basic needs fund for
Sedgwick County children in the child welfare system.
This fund will help cover the gaps not covered by state
funds and donations. These needs include clothing,
diapers/formula, toiletries, beds and bedding.
This fund will be beneficial for teens setting up an
apartment and for the children’s kin or foster families
struggling to meet their basic needs.
The Good Neighbor Fund is supported by Spirit
employees, which is a testament to their commitment
to giving back to the Wichita community.
Every year the agency receives support from
the United Methodist Church and many other churches
of faith around the state.
“We really appreciate all of the support,” said Matt
Johnson, manager of church relations. “It is so
rewarding to see the kids so happy to receive the
Vacation Bible School backpacks filled with school
supplies and the gifts at Christmas time. We had more
than 40 churches, businesses and individuals gather
gifts during Christmas Connections.”
